Smart Materials Research

Special Issue on Smart Composite Materials

Call for Papers
Smart composite materials are a novel type of composite materials in which a smart material is a constituent. It can be created by combining a conventionally functioning material, such as metal, polymer, or ceramic, with a smart material, for example, piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, shape memory material, thermoelectric, photovoltaic, electrochromic, and/or electrorheological uid. Recent advances in studying and developing smart composite materials have introduced new technologies for health monitoring, active control, and self-restoration of structural and functional materials. Knowledge and understanding of this rapidly growing eld have led to the synergy of interdisciplinary science and engineering. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing eorts to understand the smart composite materials underlying material fabrication, characterization, multiphysical behavior, material design, applications, and smart composites device or instrument development. We are particularly interested in articles describing the exploration to new understanding and discovery of physical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, and biological properties and applicable phenomena of smart composite materials. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
