The Safety Brief will be posted on the squadron website at http://kaslersquadron.org/safety_briefs.htm, including the safety Code Word. ELT Mission: Lt Col Tony Cecere presented the recent mission to northern Indiana, which also involved the Ohio and Michigan wings. Winds had been strong earlier in the day, but had reduced enough at mission time to launch the aircraft. Tony was mission pilot, Capt Aaron Pietras mission observer. Tony and Aaron left Greenwood Airport and picked up a scanner trainee on their way north. Although the Becker DF unit initially pointed northwesterly towards a signal, it became erratic and so the crew turned more northerly, towards Ft. Wayne. During the flight, some erroneous readings were noted on the fuel flow and quantity gages, with the fuel flow reading around 60 gallons per hour. The crew made a precautionary stop at Ft. Wayne to check the actual fuel quantity remaining, found the
quantity gages were correct, refueled, and departed. Tony described the crew coordination between he and Aaron and described how Aaron operated the equipment, maintained communications with the IC,and also made sure the scanner trainee accomplished his checklist items 8. G-1000 Training: Lt Col Tony Cecere and 2d Lt Jim Buist presented their first in a series of planned training sessions. Tony led the training with Jim operating the simulator program, projected on the board for all present to see. Tony began with a review of the various control knobs, buttons, and areas on the MFD. Therefore, be careful what you say For long distances, we use Repeater System Make sure you carry extra batteries for the hand held radios. It is common to have your radio operating at the beginning of the mission, but then inop due to low/dead batteries later in the mission. A dead radio is useless.
