CHENNAI: People walking from Tiruvanmiyur railway station to Tidel Park, from Anna Nagar arch to Roundtana, corporation school children, Anna University students and the disabled will now have free cab services at their disposal to travel short distances. Exnora international will soon be introducing its eco-friendly cab services, a modified cycle rickshaw which will help people travel distances up to 2 km, said M Sivaraj, Youth Exnora president and the mastermind behind the idea. Sivaraj, who plans to launch 50 of these vehicles in the city in the next 45 days said the service will be available free of cost to everyone. "The main source of revenue for the vehicle will be advertisements. Advertisers can use the space behind the vehicle to display their ads," he said. Ten drivers who will be paid Rs 12,000 per month have also been recruited. "I have recruited people who are below poverty line as drivers. Apart from this I also plan to support their families in other ways," he said. The first vehicle, built by Sivaraj and his team, was flagged off on Wednesday by Kiruthiga Udayanidhi, chairperson of Exnora's Five-ten Lights Out' campaign and Ayesha Sandhu, grand daughter of the governor and Chandigarh youth Exnora president. M B Nirmal, chairman and founder of Exnora applauded the initiative and said that with the threat of global warming looming large this was a step in the right direction. "This cycle rickshaw is eco-friendly and if more people start using these vehicles we could make a positive difference," he said. The vehicle will also be launched at the airport, Velacherry station, Thirumangalam / Mogappair stretch and at the Cancer Institute to begin with, said Sivaraj. He also mentioned that talks were on with Videocon to equip cabs with flat screen televisions to entertain passengers. In the next six months he hopes to launch 800 of these vehicles in the four south Indian states.
