Ophthalmic Head Nurse

JOB SUMMARY: As a member of the Medical Team on the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital Team, the Ophthalmic Head Nurse will be responsible fo responsible for effectively managing all nursing activities (i.e. service provision, training, and administration) and ensuring exce ensuring excellent quality nursing care as well as a strong and effective nurse training program for program participants. This position requires up to 45 weeks of worldwide travel per year, mostly to developing countries. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND SUPERVISORY ROLE: The Head Nurse reports to the Medical Team Director and supervises a team of 4 to 6 staff nurses. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (1) Operational Management:

Design and implement effective nursing program plans in accordance to ORBIS program standards

Oversee the nursing activities on the FEH and in the local hospitals during patient screening days, patient assessmen assessment, intraoperative care, and postoperative care and ensure high quality patient care.

Maintain overall recognition of and adherence to ( U.S.) Association of periOperative Registered Nurses published published Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guidelines as well as focus points from the ( U.S.) Joint Commis Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations during all FEH nursing activities. Prepare and submit timely FEH program reports.

Oversee and participate in the maintenance of patient records and forward all necessary patient records and informat information on to the appropriate parties. Ensure the effective management of the ORBIS Supply Chain Management system by: I. Ensuring adequate nursing supplies, coordinating supply requests, and monitoring the inventory usage; usage; Monitoring the nursing supply expenditures and ensuring the costs are within the budget. Working closely with the medical and anesthesia teams to facilitate their supply requests and orders.

Assisting colleagues in the medical, nursing, biomedical, and anesthesia teams with the use of the Supply C Supply Chain Management system.

Work closely with the biomedical engineers in monitoring all medical equipment functionality. Ensure the cleanliness of the nursing station on the FEH at all times and monitor ongoing compliance with the recommended guidelines for surgical suite disinfection. Actively participate in the daily team effort to clean the plane at the end of each work day. Cover regular staff nurse duties when the team is short handed due to the absence of certain team members.

(2) Staff Management:

Actively participate in staff nurse recruitment effort by liaising with HR staff in New York and interviewing candidates. candidates.

Provide a thorough orientation to new staff nurses during their first weeks of FEH employment. Effectively manage and motivate staff nurses by providing continuous supportive feedback and guidance. Prepare the daily schedules for the staff nurses. Facilitate nursing meetings as well as attend medical and staff meetings

Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate nursing training programs in collaboration with the planning team and FEH pro and FEH program manager and ensure these training programs are tailored to the needs of the local host institutions institutions and trainees. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Current RN license or registration and CPR certification. NOTE: British applicants should have ENB 346 qualification. qualification. Minimum of 4 years experience as an ophthalmic operating room nurse and demonstrated familiarity with ophthalmic ophthalmic surgical procedures and patient care. Min. 2 years leadership and /or supervisor experience. Prior experience with adult education in an international medical program setting highly preferred.
