CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Background of the Study

Study implies investigation for the mastery of facts, ideas or procedures that are yet known or only partially known to the individuals. A number of factors are associated with this cause, out of which the effective of study habits occupies of pivotal place. Many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some extra time. But if the schedules study time just as the time is scheduled. Some people study everyday, others put it off to once a week or twice a week. The frequency isnt as important as actually studying on a regular basis. Even if opening a book once a week for a class, isnt better than waiting until the first exam in a massive cram session. The level of students learning in academics may be determined by the grades a student receives for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a learner earns high grades it is conducted that they may also have learned lot while a low grade indicates lesser learning. However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that would account for the grades. No single factor can be definitely pointed out as predicting grades. It has been interplay of so many factors. In fact, almost all of existing environmental and personal factors are a variable of academic performance. However, at this point in time, the researcher would like to conduct a study habits of the fourth year high school students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc.

Statement of the Problem This study was conducted to identify the study habits of the Fourth Year High School Students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc., Bongao, Tawi-Tawi School Year 2009-2010. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the study habits of the Fourth Year High School Students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc. on the following variables: 1.1 time management; 1.2 study environment; 1.3 test taking/preparation skills; 1.4 note taking skills; and 1.5 reading skills? 2. Is there a significant difference on the study habits performed by the respondents along above mentioned variables tested?

Null Hypothesis There is no significant difference on the study habits performed by the respondents along the above mentioned variables.

Significance of the Study The researcher believes that students, particularly in Mahardika Institute of Technology will be benefited from the findings of this study since the study provides basis for awareness and better understanding of how their current study habits affected

their academic performance. Likewise, this gives them a more focused and clear perspective on how the specific behaviors related to their studies influenced study habits. Consequently, this awareness also gives a much deeper understanding of their selves as students considering that the college life is typically beset of developmental adjustment demands. School administrator, like subject area coordinator, may also be guided in the formulation of future modification of educational policies, curriculum and strategies toward a more effective delivery of learning. Teachers will also be help in understanding better the diversity of learning of their students. As such, it is hoped that they could develop more effective methodologies in teaching their subject matter. Guidance and Counseling Center will also be helped by this study through providing a more focused and factual knowledge on the factors affecting students study habits. This increased the understanding of the Guidance Counselor on the interplay of the variables studied in this research. Such knowledge is hoped to help the Guidance and Counseling practitioners towards the development and implementation of more effective programs in consideration of these variables. Future researchers, they may be able to use the result of the study in the farther research similar to what the study is.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study The respondents of this research were the Fourth Year High School Students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc.

This will only focused on the following variables; namely: time management; study environment; test taking/ preparation skills; note taking skills; and reading skills.

Students describe as one who directs zeal at a subject. Students is used for anyone who is learning.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Frank Pogue (2000) did a research project to determine why students fail. What he founds to be true in that study habits survey was that more than 30 years ago still rings true today-students fail because they do not know how to study. The best advice he can give is to develop sound study skills. He said that a student should make sure that he/she has a good study environment, a good desk, a sturdy

CHAPTER III RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY This chapter includes research design, research locale, research locale, research respondents, research instruments, validity and reliability, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data use in this study.

Research Design The study used the descriptive survey in its attempt to determine, describe, and analyzed the study habits of the Fourth Year High School of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc.

Research Locale This study was conducted at Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc. where the preparation of this manuscript was done, hence, the studys venue. The said school is a private institution and it is located in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this research study were all Fourth Year students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc. enrolled for the Academic Affairs 2009-2010.

Research Instrument The instrument was used in this study is a checklist test downloaded from the internet. This instrument was composed of items which were linked to the study habits of the students.

Validity and Reliability In order to obtain the reliability and validity of the study, the instrument was used for data gathering was submitted to the panel members of this research for their comments and suggestions.

Data Gathering Procedure To run the test, the researcher ask a permission from the Dean of the College of Education and after seeking the permission, a letter is given addressed to the principal of the said school were the study was conducted. After asking the permission from the principal, the researcher proceeded to the adviser and test will be administered to the respondents of the study.

Statistical Treatment of Data In order to describe the study habits of the Fourth Year High School Students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc. the data gathered, tabulated and interpreted

determining the ability of the respondents. The result will be recommended and calculated to evaluate the study habits of the respondents.
