Do We Need A Mediator To Understand Gurbani?

There are some Sikhs, who are against the existence of middlemen, so called the priest class to
understand Gurbani. They say that this institution was neither created by the Gurus nor is
appreciated in the teachings of Sahib Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. They say that this has kept an
ordinary Sikh away from a direct contact with Guru. They argue that Guru Sahib did not feel
the need of a middleman and hence did not establish any priestly class. All this means that
even an ordinary person with a sincere desire and patience should have no difficulty in
understanding Gurbani. Except that one may put on hold or skip the understanding of difficult
parts and move on to understand the easier parts first. Then one can, with the help of a
learned person (not necessarily a priest) understand the difficult parts. But emphasis must be
on the comprehension of Gurbani and self reading.
Further they say that it is only Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, being the Guru, who has the power to
convert your knowledge into the being. Therefore, in utter reverence and with complete
surrender, sit with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and request Him to bless you with boon of being.
Hence, it is important to sit oneself with the Guru and humbly seek His blessings for the real
understanding. It is only through such direct relationship that understanding will be achieved. A
Sikh, therefore, must do recitation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji himself. Even if one goes through
only one Shabad or one page at a time, it must be done by oneself. You will find that as time
progresses, the same line may touch you more deeply and the inspiration grows to follow
Guru's teaching. Do not separate yourself from your Guru by putting middlemen in the middle.
Otherwise, no matter how much worship, discourses or lectures a Sikh may observe on Shri
Guru Granth Sahib Ji, a Sikh may be betraying his Guru's command.

In summary according to them, instead of spending too much energy on worships, celebrations,
wasteful rituals and without any help from any middleman, a Sikh must find time to sit with his
Guru, Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to read and to seek His blessings for a true understanding of
Gurbani.
These Sikhs raise the following points:
1. There is absolutely no need of middlemen in understanding of Gurbani.
2. The institution of middlemen or priestly class is not appreciated by Guru Sahibaan.
3. If we seek a middle man, then we betray Guru Sahibs command.

Let us see if these Sikhs are right or they themselves are treading the wrong path. Guru Sahib
repeatedly orders us to look for a middleman to find out the truth. Gurbani lays stress on this
point that no one can have the darshan of Guru Sahib or get the nectar of Naam without the
company of a Sant or a middleman.
Guru Sahibaan lay stress repeatedly in Sacred Gurbani that without the company of a puran
Sant, a Sikh can never get the nectar of Naam.
The following holy verses explain this very clearly:

Gurbani is a treasure,The Sants hold the key to it in their hands.(Ang 893)

We know very well that no one can open a treasure without a key. Gurbani is a priceless
treasure and Guru Sahib tells us that only the Sants have the key to open this treasure.

And Guru Sahib clearly says that no one can have the vision of the Lord without the company of
a Sant (you can call him a mediator or a middle man).

One who helps me to behold the Blessed Vision of my Beloved, for even an instant - I am a sacrifice to

From the above holy verses, it is clear that Gurbani lays stress again and again that the
company of a Sant is essential to obtain the Sacred Naam and the vision of the Lord. Mere
worship of Gurbani as a source of knowledge and salvation, but not following the blueprints
and lessons detailed within is meaningless. Gurbani stresses that the company of a Puran Sant
is indispensable and nothing can ever match it.
The Sikhs, who think otherwise that the company of a Sant is forbidden by the Gurus, are sadly
mistaken. They are just like a kid, who has just entered the kindergarten and argues with a
learned man that all you are talking about the computers or science is a lie. It cannot be true.
Guru Sahib asks us to go find out a Sant. May be it is too difficult for us to have the darshan of a
real Sant.
Guru Sahib asks us to try to find out a true Sant.

Out of millions, it is rare that such a Sant is seen. O Nanak, with him, we are carried across. If one has

N N8|m |H | | HHF H |Nm v
O Nanak, break away from the false, and seek out the Sants, your true friends. ( Ang 1102 )
Now the question arises that there are so many fake sants also in this world. How can we find
out the real Sant, who is able to bless us with Sacred Naam and to bless us with the vision of
the Lord?
Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji shows us the way to locate a Puran Sant. Guru Sahib says that we should
take the guidance from Sahib Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and then we can never be deceived:
||8 N Mm M |N Jm v
The Creator Lord Himself stood between us, and not
even a minor detail can be wrong. ( ang 623 )

Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji clearly mention the qualities of a Puran Sant:

We should pray before Sahib Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with folded hands to guide us to seek
the dust and sanctuary of a Puran Sant in order to bring us closer to Akal Purukh. How can we
|H H|H |N|H |H J| Hl H| H v
Those who do not forget the Lord, with each breath going in and going out and whose minds are filled
with the Mantra of the Lord's Name

|H HU| N HU| H v
They alone are blessed; O Nanak, they are the Puran Sants. ( ang 319 )

do that? We should think a simple question related to Gurbani (Parmaarth) in our mind without
speaking a single word, and pray before Sahib Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji that I am going to see
such and such Sant, and if he will be meditating on your Bani with each and every breath, then
he will answer my prayer in a second, otherwise not. Now, if he is a Puran Sant, then he will
answer the question in our mind in a second, but if he is not true, then he will never be in a
position to answer the question. This can never be wrong, because we have Sahib Shri Guru
Granth Sahib between ourselves and the Sant.
Only a Puran Sant will know exactly what is going on inside our mind. Therefore it is imperative
that when we pray before Guru Sahib and request Him to be a judge in finding a true Sant, we
will definitely get the real guidance.
You can never be fooled, when you pray before Sahib Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji because a Puran
Sant is perfect in every regard and meditates on the Bani of Guru Sahib always with each and
every breath. And what you pray before Guru Sahib, that prayer reaches a Puran Sant
immediately.
So instead of harping on our own contrary to Gurbani teachings tone, we should pray before
Sahib Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to guide us to find a mediator to show us the way. From the
above, it is clearly proved that the need of a mediator is really necessary to reach our goal to
obtain Naam and the vision of of Guru Sahib.
