GIFAtec is produced by natural gypsum and a portion FGD-gypsum by admixturing of cellulose fibres made of sorted recycled paper and cardboard. The natural gypsum is exploited in opencast minings in an area c. 30 km around the factory. The natural-chemical identical clean FGD gypsum is calcined with the natural gypsum to stucco. The papers are soaked in big tanks. After processing time they are mixed with processing

water and the stucco to a mush. This mush is put on a transport belt, reaching a thickness of c. 2mm by pulling of the surplus water by vacuuming. On the forming cylinder it is wounded up to the needed thickness, roughly cut and after a setting period dried in a 12-layer dryer. The GIFAtec large-sized panels are been sanded. They could been cut / shaped on demand in a

format station to become GIFAfloor panels or in case of big orders to GIFAtec special dimensioned panels. After priming the top and back side of the panels they are packed on pallets. This kind of production of gypsum fibre material ensures the unique homogeneous density through the whole thickness of the GIFAtec material.

Building biological data / Waste disposal

Since March 2003 Knauf Integral GIFAtec is recommended by certificate by the institute for building biological testing IBR (Institut fr Baubiologie Rosenheim). The eurofins institute Galten (DK) certificated the suitability for interior installation according German institute for building technology (DIBt) approval criteria by undertaking aptitude tests with Knauf Integral GIFAtec according the new European standards. For GIFAtec waste the waste disposal code number is 17 08 02 for building material based on gypsum or no. 17 09 04 for mixed building and demolition waste, not polluted by dangerous materials.

In dependency on their density and dimensions GIFAtec panels could be bent in the panels level. Parts with a big thickness and small bending radius could be made by glueing several layers of thin GIFAtec panels

glued holohedral after beeing bent. Another possibility to produce curved surfaces is to fix the GIFAtec panels on precut GIFAtec frames.

The load bearing capacity of the GIFAtec frames is tested with statical and dynamic test procedures and proved according to prEN 13964 and DIN 18168-2.

Knauf Integral GIFAtec Refining and surface treatment

Arial Narrow, Bold, 18 Pt, Spatio 10 GIFAtec 1100 / GIFAtec 1500

Arial Narrow, Bold, 10 Pt, Zeilenabstand 16 Pt, Spatio 30 Surface treatments

1. Glazing The glaze is produced in all the customary ways used in the field of wood refining. In doing so, after the element formatting the surfaces of the Knauf Integral GIFAtec gypsum fibre material are injected with a special coloured primer. The natural marling of the material is characterised by the differing suction properties of the plaster material components. In a final process, the glazed surface is given a coat of clear varnish as a transparent protective coating.

2. Varnishing The varnishing of the Knauf Integral GIFAtec gypsum fibre elements always takes place as at least the third process after the priming and the surface sanding. Depending on the nature of the varnish being used and its covering properties, several applications are given (under some circumstances always with an interim sanding). Whether the varnish is applied before or after any surface structure changes e.g. slits, holes or sandblasting, depends on the desired look of the elements in the property. The standard varnishing method is airless spraying, which enables a perfect, texture-free surface. Multi-layer effect varnishes can also be created using this application procedure.

3. Veneering The Knauf Integral GIFAtec plaster fibre material can be veneered using all known real wood veneers. The application is similar to that of timber boards, but is only possible using the special adhesive with the respective veneer press setting for our materials. With that, at the customers request elements of building materials class A2 (noncombustible) including veneer can also be manufactured. The type of wood used in the veneered Knauf Integral plaster material doesnt make any difference to the classification. The final treatment of the veneered surface can be administered as normal. Formating, slits and holes are usually created after the veneer has been applied and the surface treated.

13

GIFAtec 1100 / GIFAtec 1500

Surface treatments

4. Laminating In areas where specific requirements are placed on the hygiene and surface strength, e.g. in hospital construction, the Knauf Integral gypsum fibre materials are laminated with HPL (high pressure laminate). The surface design of the HPL materials is extremely varied, thus enabling the optical demands to be integrated with the technical requirements of each property. The flat application takes place similar to that of veneering using special adhesive. Post-shaped applications are also possible. If not using metal protection strips, e.g. in hospital corridors that also serve as emergency walkways, with non-combustible support material can only be manufactured using Knauf Integral GIFAtec.

5. Embossing process The process of embossing is realized with prefabricated pattern varnish in a thickness of just a few micrometres, coated with a first layer of protecting varnish. This package of varnish is applied to calibrated GIFAtec by a cylinder. Whether monochomic, wood or fantasy design up to metallic lustre there are nearly unlimited possibilities. The surface hardness even withstands the scratching-coin-test without leaving scratch marks. Some dozen standardized designs are available on short call. A multiplicity of special appearances are available on request for a minimum quantity of c. 4,000m. Of course edge embossing is possible. For profile-following special embossing cylinders are required. Depending on the selected surface-protecting varnishing, the gloss level range goes from matt-finished up to high-gloss finished. Embossed GIFAtec panels are classified non-combustible A2 acc. to DIN 4102-01.

6. Dyeing With this procedure the gypsum fibre blend is mixed in with the colour pigment, which in turn colours the material. However, this method can only be realised with a minimum order quantity of around 2000 m2. The characteristics of the marling created by the components of the plaster material remain evident with this kind of processing. A homogenous rich colouration throughout cannot be obtained from this process. Depending on the nature and quantity of the colour pigment, the Knauf Integral gypsum fibre material can remain classified in the building materials class A1 (non-combustible).

Arial Narrow, Bold, 10 Pt, Zeilenabstand 16 Pt, Spatio 30 Surface treatments

7. Fluid coverings Elastified and water vapour permeable fluid coverings like e.g. epoxy resin material or ceramics could be applied to GIFAtec in workshop. These coverings could be produced in nearly every colour with the surface hardness and / or resistance against desinfectants / chemicals / cleaners as required for the planned usage. GIFAtec panels with ceramic covering are classified non-combustible A2 acc. to DIN 4102-01

8. Construction site coating The surface of Knauf Integral GIFAtec panels could also be coated at the construction site after they have been fitted. To do this, the element surfaces to be coated have to be primed. Paint and coatings like, for example, paper, textile or fibreglass wallpapers can be applied as usual. It is also possible to apply ceramic tiles without a problem. If necessary, sealant may need to be applied (e.g. with Knauf surface sealer).

9. Floor coverings The Knauf Integral GIFAfloor systems could be easily provided with all customary floor coverings like, for example, carpets or smooth surfaces like PVC and linoleum, ceramic tiles or natural stone as well as parquet. Find more informations in our technical data sheets F18 and F19.

Construction and installation

Construction
Knauf Integral GIFAtec large-sized gypsum fibre panels are surface primed raw cut panels for industrial or workshop further treatment to become a finished product. Constructive basics of the further treatment of derived timber products are transferable to the further treatment of GIFAtec. The non-combustible GIFAtec large-sized gypsum fibre panels are used for manufacturing of furniture in e.g. escape routes or for the impact protection of the walls of corridors of e.g. hospitals instead of the flammable materials wood or derived timber products. Thin panels of GIFAtec could be bent to curved structures. The glueing of some GIFAtec panels to get a thicker panel is possible. GIFAtec 1500 could be used in Knauf drywall constructions to get bullet resistant drywalls. For further information ask your local Knauf company. Protect GIFAtec gypsum fibre material against water by taking suitable measures.

Grounding
The structure for the installation of GIFAtec has to It has to be even or to be levelled by installing a Contact points of oily or greasy subgrades with hold at least the bearing strength for the expected levelling layer or beeing averaged out by the used GIFAtec have to be isolated by a suitable barrier usage load. mounting parts (e.g. glueing system). layer. Wet subgrades are unsuited for installation of GIFAtec.

Processing and installation

GIFAtec gypsum fibre material could be cut, milled, drilled, sanded, stapled, nailed, screwed... with the tools and machines used for derived timber products. To reduce the disposal of dust an exhauster is recommended. Consider the extension of GIFAtec for fixatures on site. GIFAtec1100 could be processed with HM-tipped tools, diamond-tipped tools are recommended for fast running machines. Screws could be fixed in dependency on type and diameter of the screws without predrilling. GIFAtec1500 could be processed with HM-tipped tools with slow running machines only. Fast running machines have to be equiped with diamondtipped tools. Nails and staples have to be tested in their behavior of permeation. GIFAtec 1500 must be predrilled for using screws. Notice the weight of a piece of furniture made of GIFAtec, if necessary installation of single parts on site have to be planned.

Glueing, coating and covering

For glueing of primed GIFAtec panels holohedral PVA adhesives and hot glues are suitable. Bonding has to be tested. Temperature and duration of pressing while hot glueing procedure have to be adjusted. Application of veneer or laminate only with a countermove application on the back side of the panel. Nut- / Feder- Klebstoff (glue for tongue and groove), Knauf Integral Flchenklebstoff (glue for the 2nd layer) or Knauf USG Systems Aquapanel Joint Adhesive (filled) are depending on the purpose adaptable. Other glueing systems have to be tested on their usability. Tests of the pull off strength have to be done at least on one specimen. Fluid coverings like e.g. epoxy resin material or fluid ceramics must be elastified and water vapour permeable. They could be applied to GIFAtec in workshop. Elastic coverings like e.g. PVC, linoleum to be glued with suitable adhesive. Inelastic coverings like e.g. ceramic tiles or natural stone must be fixed with flexible mortar in the sufficient thickness.
