Intelligence Bureau to telcos: Monitor internet traffic on mobiles:The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has demanded that the telecoms ministry ask mobile phone companies to put mechanisms in place to track internet usage on mobile phones. The IB is of the view that internet usage on computers where the connectivity is offered via Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are traceable. But the same is not applicable when it comes to browsing on mobile phones as telcos had not set up facilities for real time tracking of websites visited by their customers. The IB further added that even when provided with Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of websites, telcos were unable identify

Ubuntu on TV near you!

Canonical has a big plans for Ubuntu, and they involve not just desktop and laptop, but also smartphones and TVs. Linux for TVs isnt new; some television manufacturers already use versions of Linux in television sets and set-top boxes. Google, too tried to offer an Android-based experience for TVs, which doesnt seem to have taken off much. Boxee, Roku, and TiVo all use Linux in their set-top boxes, and there are numerous Linux based free and open source solutions such as XBMC and GeeXbox. Certainly, this would also open up opportunities for developers who could access a growing market for apps catering to Smart TVs

6 things to know about smartphone malware :

If you thought smartphones are fun and safe for browsing, communication, infotainment, networking, e-commerce and banking, you may want to think again. While most transactions may indeed be safe because of the checks put in place by the respective organisations, there is a real threat to other activities in an application-driven world. New global research has shown that mobile malware is galloping like never before, keeping pace with newer software that runs your smartphones. Google's Android seems to have emerged as the biggest platform for exploitation. According to Juniper Networks' 2011 Mobile Threats Report, mobile malware has reached a new stage of maturity. The report, conducted by the Juniper Networks Mobile Threat Center -- the only threat center in the world devoted exclusively to mobile security research -- is claimed to be one of the largest first-hand quantitative research studies of its kind. Here are some of its key findings. More malware than ever before- The year 2011 saw a record number of mobile malware attacks -- particularly to the Google Android platform. With Android emerging as the most popular open source operating system across a huge number of devices at different price points from different manufacturers, it has also emerged as the most susceptible to accelerating malware. In the last seven months of 2011 alone, malware targeting the Android platform jumped 3,325 per cent. Malware smarter for smartphones Cyber criminals continue to hone their craft by finding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities and human behaviour for profit across all mobile platforms and devices.,and, according to the report, no platform is devoid of it. Research into Apple iOS security remains limited given the closed nature of its platform; but in 2011, security researchers were successful in getting an unapproved application onto the Apple App Store. There was a 155 per cent increase in malware across all platforms in 2011, according to Juniper Networks Mobile Threat Center. Low entry barrier- Data shows an evolution from sophisticated, complex and deep technical attacks to schemes that are lightweight, social and able to deliver fast profits. As mobile users download more applications than ever before, applications themselves are becoming the "killer app" for hackers and the most popular way to compromise devices. Beware of fake installers- A new attack method dubbed "Fake Installers" was the fastest growing type of malware found in 2011. Fake Installers trick victims into unknowingly paying for pirated versions of popular applications that are normally free. Spyware & SMS Trojans- In 2011, spyware and SMS Trojans comprised the vast majority of malware targeting mobile devices, at 63 per cent and 36 per cent respectively. In addition to the rising threat of malware, consumers and enterprises remain susceptible to a very low-tech risk: lost or stolen mobile devices. Nearly 8 lakh apps scanned!- juniper Networks Mobile Threat Center examined more than 790,000 applications and vulnerabilities across every major mobile device OS for its report. "It is vital that consumers and businesses take the necessary security precautions when using mobile devices. Securing mobile devices requires a combination of safeguarding connections from interception, securing data in transit from prying eyes or theft, protecting against fast-propagating malware, possessing the tools to manage devices and apps, and securing the data, usernames and passwords on them in the event that they are lost or stolen," said Sanjay Beri, vice-president and general manager, Junos Pulse Business Unit, Juniper Networks.

Windows 8: Features Preview And Requirements

Microsoft's latest OS, Windows 8, is already in beta status. So far it appears that a huge number of people who downloaded the Consumer Preview are pretty much satisfied with their user-experience with the OS. According to a report, Microsoft is rumored to officially release the final Windows 8 platform in October 2012. Meanwhile, a leading technology and gadgets news blog has this additional report about the Windows 8 platform requirements: "Microsoft is coming up with a new OS called Windows 8. Windows 8 will be optimized to run on both desktops and mobile devices like tablets. Windows 8 will feature, among other things, a new touchcentric UI. Windows 8 Requirements: 1. Windows 8 devices must support no-reboot upgrades for graphic cards drivers. 2. There must be a minimum of 10GB free space after all OS updates. 3. Display resolution of at least 1366 x 768 pixels. 4. DirectX 9 / Direct3D 10 compatible graphics with WDDM 1.0 / 1.2 driver. 5. A camera that can do at least 720p video is also needed. 6. Your device must also have WLAN, gyroscope and accelerometer. 7. A magnetometer, speakers, and Bluetooth 4.0 are also needed. 8. There should be at least one USB 2.0 port. 9. Power, Rotation Lock, Windows Key, Volume Up and Volume Down buttons are needed. 10. Tablets must have a multi-touch and support for at least one of your hands on the screen. 11. Hard disk space of 16GB for the 32-bit and 20GB for the 64-bit. 12. 1GB RAM for 32-bit and 2GB RAM for the 64-bit. 13. 1GHz or faster CPU. In addition, the Consumer Preview or beta is a big download. The 32-bit version is 2.5GB while the 64bit version is about 3.3GB. For the download process, you have a choice via Windows 8 Consumer Preview Setup or Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO. For the Windows 8 Consumer Preview Setup, users will download a 5MB setup file that will check their system if it can run the beta and choose which version is best for their device. For the ISO option, users download an ISO image file which they can then burn on a DVD and run on compatible PCs. Meanwhile, for tablets without physical keyboards, it will be replaced by the two-key combo of the Windows Key + Power. Also, ARM-based tablets won't be able to install another OS since secure booting cannot be deactivated on these devices". It is very likely that Microsoft is going to regain some lost market share and get new patrons and fans with the introduction of Windows 8 on their fold.

UEFI: The New Super BIOS

The bluish, confusing menu of the BIOS (Basic Input / Output System) has been a feature of every PC for the past 30 years. Its Function is to detect installed hardware and provide the necessary interface for the boot process of Windows and Linux. The BIOS was developed for PCs in the early eighties, and has remained virtually Unchanged in recent years. Since 2000, Intel is working on a new rmware interface, the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface). Since 2005, the United EFI Forum is responsible for Developing, managing and promoting UEFI specie captions. Big companies such as Intel, AMD, Apple, Dell and Microsoft develop product in accordance to UEFI standards. UEFI has a faster, more stable, easier-to-use and secure interface. Nevertheless, there are hardly any systems that use UEFI as of now. We show you how your computer will boot up in the future using UEF

Faster: UEFI integrates the Drives

You can observe the boot process carried out by the BIOS once the PC is Switched on. For a few seconds, until the Windows boot screen appears, the BIOS executes the so-called POST (Power-On Self-Test). Its a diagnostic Testing sequence which checks the functionality of the CPU, memory and various input/output devices. The BIOS works at an abstraction level so that the operating system doesnt have direct access to the hardware. However, the correct drivers are loaded as the operating system is loading. Finally, the BIOS scan the master boot record or partition table, which resides in the rst Sector of a partitioned drive. If the boot loader is present on the active partition, the operating system takes control of the system from the BIOS and starts up. The BIOS has two fundamental weaknesses. Firstly, it is based on 16-bit assembly code and cannot directly address the latest 64-bit hardware, and Secondly, there are no set standards for speci cations, so manufacturers come up with their own versions. The participants of the UEFI Forum wanted to set this straight. From the outset, each process has been precisely dened.

Thus, the boot process or platform initialization (PI) is clearly described in phases. Immediately after powering up the PC, the Pre-EFI Initialization (PEI) is executed, which initializes the CPU, memory and chipset. This is then followed by the Driver Execution Environment (DXE).

Thus, the boot process or platform initialization (PI) is clearly described in phases. Immediately after powering up the PC, the Pre-EFI Initialization (PEI) is executed, which initializes the CPU, memory and chipset. This is then followed by the Driver Execution Environment (DXE). At this point, the rest of the hardware is initialized. This process saves the time required for booting because UEFI can integrate various drivers that need not be reloaded during booting. Thanks to these drivers, the user already has access to network card, including features such as network booting and remote assistance at the early stage of the boot process. With the graphics processor enabled, a fancy user interface is also presented. However, biggest time-saving feature of UEFI is the fact that not all the installed hard drives will be scanned for the boot loader, since the boot drive is set during the installation of the operating system in the UEFI. The default boot loader is run without consuming much time searching the drives. The faster boot time is not the only advantage of UEFI; applications can be stored on virtually any non-volatile storage device installed on the PC. For example, programs and diagnostic tools such as antivirus or system management tools can be run from an EFI partition on the hard drive. This feature will be very useful to original equipment manufacturers (OEM), who can distribute systems with extra functions in addition to the standard EFI rmware stored on the motherboards ROM.

UEFI fully supports 3 TB hard drives

Due to delayed transition to UEFI oveand over again, new hardware could be addressed by the BIOS by means of extensions. The classic BIOS can access only up to 232 sectors of 512 bytes in size, which translates to a total of 2 TB. So the upcoming 3 TB variants of Western Digital Caviar Green and Seagate Barracuda XT wont be fully compatible with the current BIOS. Seagate uses larger sectors to make the full capacity usable on Windows, but the BIOS cannot boot from this drive. UEFI, on the other hand, works with GUID partition table (GPT) with 64-bit long addresses and can handle up to 264 sectors that address up to 9 Zettabyte (1 zettabyte equals 1 billion terabytes). Since Windows Vista can handle GPT disks, booting works with only a few UEFI motherboards in the market, such as the Intel DQ57TM. However, in 2011, Intel will sell more motherboards with UEFI than standard BIOS, followed by all the other manufacturers.

New Technology Platform for Molecule-Based Electronics

claimed that nanotechology could revolutionise computer technology, it was in part because they imagined that the development of molecular electronics was just around the corner. Molecular electronics involves replacing traditional electrical components with molecules, creating tiny electronic circuits for use in, for example, computers and data storage. This has proven to be more challenging than anticipated, in part because the components short-circuited when the molecules were contacted with electrodes and were therefore unable to create a workable circuit. Graphene is the solution to the problem. "We can now place one of our graphene flakes on top of the molecules, protecting the system from short circuits. That is how we developed a new technology platform for use in the development of new electronics based on molecules," says Kasper Nrgaard, who explains that in the Danish-Chinese collaboration, they are trying to use molecules with different properties in the platform, for example, molecules that can alternate between being conductive and nonconductive. This paves the way for the electronics of the future in areas such as memory technology.

Researchers at the Nano-Science Center at the University of Copenhagen have developed a new nano-technology platform for the development of molecule-based electronic components using the wonder material graphene. At the same time, they have solved a problem that has challenged researchers from around world for ten years.
Since its discovery in 2004, graphene has been called a wonder material, in part because it is 200 times stronger than steel, a good electrical conductor and is just a single atom layer thick. With these properties, there are sky-high expectations for what graphene can be used for. That is why researchers around the world are working on developing methods to make and modify graphene. In a recently published article in the journal Advanced Materials, researchers in nano-chemistry at the Department of Chemistry describe how they are among the first in the world to be able to chemically produce large flakes of graphene. " chemical and physical processes, that we have been working to develop in recent years, we are now able to produce such large flakes of graphene that we can use the flakes as components in an entirely new technology platform within moleculebased electronics," says nano-chemist Kasper Nrgaard, who along with his Danish and Chinese colleagues in the Danish-Chinese Center for Molecular Nano-Electronics at the Nano-Science Center, is behind the new platform as well as the solution to ten year old problem. More than 10 years ago when it was being pro-

Proxima Futuristic Car Design Concept Technology Innovation Gianpaolo Alvino

Lets start with this new car design concept presenting some projects Gianpaolo Alvino, young engineer and designer Neapolitan already known internationally which combines the undeniable technical skills is an interesting approach to the topic of creative design. The first project is called Proxima illustrated by images, and is an idea for a Futuristic Automotive Technology two seat, lined up in tandem with a line that seems to turn, seamlessly from one medium to another.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is that, although a proposal full of imaginative ideas is actually effective and feasible with current technology. This is, in general, the philosophy behind the design Gianpaolo Alvino. The two are intimately linked, unable regardless of the laws of mechanics. Its my extraction technique, probably, that keeps me with his feet on the ground. That allows me to draw objects too futuristic, I would say useless. We do not like this design. Why look at 2050, if tomorrow we can improve the world? This is true innovation.

Pocket Microscope With Accessory for Ordinary Smart Phone

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed an optical accessory that turns an ordinary camera phone into a high-resolution microscope. The device is accurate to one hundredth of a millimetre. Among those who will benefit from the device are the printing industry, consumers, the security business, and even health care professionals. A new Finnish enterprise called KeepLoop Oy and VTT are already exploring the commercial potential of the invention. The first industrial applications and consumer models will be released in early 2012. The operation of the device is based on images produced by the combined effect of an LED light and an optical lens. Various surfaces and structures can be examined in microscopic detail and the phone's camera used to take sharp, high-resolution images that can be forwarded as MMS messages. An ordinary mobile phone turns into an instant microscope by attaching a thin, magnetic microscope module in front of the camera's normal lens. The device fits easily in the user's pocket, unlike conventional tubular microscopes. The plastic macro lens of the mobile phone microscope magnifies objects effectively. The camera's field of view is 2 x 3 millimetres. A number of LEDs have been sunk into the outer edge of the lens, allowing objects to be illuminated from different angles. Images illuminated from several different angles could be used to produce 3D topographic maps, for example, with mobile phone software. The 3D maps would be accurate to one hundredth of a millimetre. The competitive edge of the product is based on next-generation lens technology, the compact and user-friendly structure, and customisable extra features. The mobile phone microscope is suited for examining surfaces and surroundings, for security, health care, and even games The mobile phone microscope could also be used to study surface formations, especially in the printing industry as part of quality control and in field conditions. In the security business the device could be used, for example, to read microcode in various logistics systems, while it is also suited for studying security markings, and for authenticating products as genuine as part of brand protection. The microscope is capable of detecting hidden symbols in products that are not visible to the naked eye. The device can also be applied to study of the environment. Consumers could use the instant microscope when out and about to examine the leaves of trees and plants, for example, or study insects. Another potential application is in examining textile structures such as strands of hair, or the fibrous structure of paper. The device also has uses in social media, and in community-based hybrid media where traditional forms of media are used in combination with each other. There are also several potential applications in the gaming world.

Apple iPad 2 to officially launch in India within the next few day
While Indian customers have been able to procure the Apple iPad 2 either internationally or through online retail channels like HomeShop18, real shelves in India are still not stocking the popular tablet. If a report by OnlyGizmos is to be believed however, the Apple iPad 2 will apparently be officially launching very soon in India, i.e., by next week. Apple COO, Tim Cook, was the source, when he spoke of the success of the new tablet, stating the iPad 2 would be hitting 13 new countries in a week - a list that includes India. OnlyGizmos later updated its report, and now pegs the release within the next couple of days, sometime between the 28th and 29th of April! About time! While there have been no official confirmations from Apple regarding the arrival of the iPad 2 in India, we remain hopeful. For now, official pricing is still unknown, but as expected, Apple will probably launch the tablets at the original iPad prices, when it first arrived in India, starting at Rs. 27,900 for the base 16GB Wi-Fi only model. The news will undoubtedly make many happy, especially those who had considered paying a substantial premium to get the device by any means to the country.
