1.Obeying the Traffic Rules It is very important to obey (follow; observe) the traffic rules. Most of the traffic accidents result from (are due to; are caused by) disobedience of the traffic rules. Such acts as running through the red light and speeding are especially the major causes of car accidents. Of course, not only the drivers but the pedestrians have the same responsibility to observe the traffic rules. Only when we follow closely the traffic rules, will our traffic be made improved (better). 2. The law is indispensable in modern society because it has two function. First(ly), we live in a very complicated society. The law can protect the safety of our lives and property. Second(ly), the law imposes proper punishment (penalty) on the criminals so that it can help (to) maintain social order. In spite of that (For all that), there are still many people who violate the law and commit crimes. To improve this condition (situation), the government should enforce the law more severely. 3. Many accidents happen only because some people think they are too clever to have to obey the traffic rules. ~First of all, pedestrians are supposed to take advantage of overpasses and underpasses. Careless jaywalkers often bring about misfortunes to themselves and confusion to others. Secondly, drivers should be considerate to others. They had better slow down their speed at every intersection or circle, or any other dangerous area. As everyone knows, it is a true test of our patience and skill to drive in foul weather or in a traffic jam. To sum up, casualties can be reduced when everyone knows and follows the traffic rules. 4.

It's wet and cold this morning. I'm wearing a thick sweater and a red scarf as a birthday present. My mother gave me the scarf as a birthday present. My mother especially picked it up for me when she went on a trip to Japan. I like the scarf very much and I'll cherish it. 5. It is obvious that most senior high school students do not like to wear uniforms. They usually regard uniforms as monotonous, boring, and uncomfortable. In spite of these complains, I think uniforms are needed for two reasons. First, uniforms let us know who is a student and who is not. Second, school uniforms can help to create a intimate feeling among the students of the same school. 6. Mr. Lin's childhood was spent fooling around and getting into scrapes. He did not realize that he had gone far wrong until he read a biography of a great man. How that great man overcame his difficulties and took defeat left a deep impression on his mind. Since then, he has been enthusiastic about everything he does and has taken delight in learning. Now he is a successful industrialist and is ready to help everyone in need. 7. With the development of industry and growth of the population, noise increases. People become more and more concerned about noise pollution. Long exposure to noisy surroundings may result in some physical and mental problems. The percentage of people suffering loss of sleep and hearing loss is very high. It goes without saying that we should take measures to stop noise pollution. 8. It's not necessary for us to read a book page by page. The first few paragraphs will acquaint us with what the author will discuss. And the last few paragraphs will give us a general idea of the content. As we read, try to find the main point of every paragraph and keep on asking questions. The more questions we ask, the more efficient our reading will be. 9.

Hobbies make students have something to do on holidays and prevent old men from feeling bored after they retire. Some people like to collect foreign stamps or coins, yet others like to collect seashells or rare stones. They do not cost much and everyone can take part in them. A good hobby gives us not only pleasure but also knowledge. One thing which deserves our attention is that don't ever indulge in bad hobbies such as gambling or using drugs. 10. Everybody should have an aim in life. The aim guides us and gives us direction to our lives. Without an aim, we may feel lost and our lives may be wasted. With a noble goal in life, we can advance without hesitation. We should try our best to make our life worth living. 11. English is an important language, so many people are learning it. Many Chinese students think ( that ) it is very difficult ( hard ) to learn to speak English. But if you keep practicing speaking English, you can overcome any difficulty ( difficulties ). Memorizing the dialogues in the text does not mean ( that ) you are able to speak English. The most important thing is that you can say ( express ) what ( whatever ) you want to say in English. 12. When I was in elementary school, I was very weak and often caught colds. Ever since I entered junior high school, I have been trying my best to find opportunities for exercise. Although my schoolwork has been heavy, I have managed to jog for half an hour every day. Six years' constant training has made me not only stronger but taller. Now everyone says that he cannot believe that I was short and thin before. 13.() When I went out ( When I left home ) yesterday morning, it ( the weather ) was rather ( quite ) warm. Therefore ( So ), I did not wear any sweater; I only wore a shirt ( blouse ). However ( But ), in the afternoon the temperature went down ( dropped ) rapidly ( sharply ). Although I came ( got ) home earlier than usually in the evening, still I did not feel well. Today I not only sneeze but also have a headache. I think I had better see a doctor right away. 14.()

People have different opinions ( views ) of ( on ) what is the best way to spend a vacation. Some people like to go to in the quiet forest, where they can get away from crowds of people for a while. ( temporarily ) Some people would rather ( prefer to ) go to the big city because they can visit museums or go shopping. Still some other people ( others ) like to go to the seaside to let the waves wash their worries away. A few people decide to stay at home, doing things like house-cleaning. 15.() On my way home, I saw a little girl crying on the roadside yesterday. I ran to her quickly and asked her what happened. The little girl said that she pushed the doorbell for several times but nobody answered. Seeing her crying so sadly, I stayed with her till her mother came back. Though I came back home half an hour late, I felt I did a meaningful job. 16.() Have you ever wondered ( thought ) what the future hotel will be like? Each room is equipped ( furnished ) with a radio, a TV ( set ) and an alarm clock. Besides ( In addition ), all the rooms are air-conditioned. The toilet and laundry facilities are located in the common area of the hotel. Believe it or not, this hotel is almost usually filled to capacity ( full ). 17. In the past, people rarely had as much leisure time as we have now. Traditionally, work took so much time that very little was left for any sort of recreation ( kind of entertainment ). Fortunately, thanks to the quick development of modern science, life nowadays has changed much. With more free time today, most of us are able to pursue other interests. We have a great many choices: music, dance, drama, movies, sports, travels, and so on. 18. Everyone has his own hobby; archery is my father's favorite hobby. My father finds it enjoyable because it keeps him fit ( healthy ) in good shape mentally and physically. He says that it takes a good eye and a steady arm to shoot an arrow. It also requires a lot of concentration when practicing. However, he is against ( objects to ) using bow and arrow to shoot animals. 19.

Although money is very important in our daily life, it is not everything. For example, money can buy medicine but cannot buy health ( but not health ). Money can buy beautiful furniture but cannot replace love and understanding of a family. A lot of people work like slaves just because they want to earn as much money as possible. In my opinion, don't envy people who are possessed of ( who have ) great wealth. Try to be contented with ( content with ) what you have already had. 20. To decide ( Deciding ) whether or not to go to college is one of the most important choice that young people are faced with today. Some people think that to attend college is a waste of time because it cannot offer working experience. Some people think college is important because it enlarges ( enriches ) your knowledge. You can learn to be independent, so that you can adapt yourself to the society in the future. In addition ( Besides ), college education teaches you to think for yourself and make your own decisions. 21. Some people think that telling a lie is not such a bad thing if they can get away with it. However, I would like to point out several disadvantages of telling a lie. For instance, a liar takes a big risk of hurting someone else. Furthermore, we should remember that the person who lies also hurts himself. Telling a lie is like cheating yourself, no matter if you get caught or not. 22. At the end of last semester, I made a series of plans for the summer vacation. I planned to make a trip around the island during the first ten days of summer vacation. After the trip, I hoped to improve ( enhance ) my English writing and reading, hoping to get a good score ( to score high ) in the coming JUEE. So I enrolled ( registered for ) Chang's English Class and it turned out to be a right choice. Now, the summer vacation is almost over, and I think I have a wonderful vacation. 23. In the United States fast food is not expensive, but in Taiwan it is not true. The expensiveness of food does not prevent the youngsters here from going to the McDonald's. Is it the taste they love

or are they tired of using chopsticks? Maybe going to an American style fast food restaurant is a cultural experience. But one thing is surely true; hamburger will be the favorite food for youngsters here. 24. Mr. Li's father was a poor farmer. He hoped that Mr. Li left the village for the city to make money. Mr. Li went to Taipei to seek his fortune by himself when he was eighteen years old. Because of his diligence and frugality, he soon laid a good foundation for his business. Though he is very rich now, he still remembers those honest farmers in the village. Every year he devotes a big sum of money to helping the village folk. 25. Energy crisis is a global issue today ( a worldwide problem nowadays ). Water, electricity, gasoline ( petroleum ), and gas are daily necessities but they will be used up ( exhausted ). Therefore, it is everyone's responsibility to conserve energy. Besides, scientists and engineers should work together to develop new sources of energy today. It's hard to imagine what our earth would be like fifty years from now if we used up all the energy in the world. 26. I have a lot of bad habits. Among them, the worst one is postponement ( procrastination ). Everyday I tell myself that I must do things at once, but I always delay doing them. As a result, I am always doing the work that was not finished yesterday. I feel that I am idle and lacking in efficiency. I make up my mind to shake off this bad habit. I will make a list of the things that I should do in the morning. Then I must do the jobs according to my schedule later the day. In this way I can get rid of the bad habit of postponement. 27. A generation gap is the difference in social values and manners between children and their parents, teachers and relatives that causes lack of understanding and confrontations. I am eighteen and my father is forty-five, but we have no generation gap in our family. The main reason is that we respect each other's point of view ( opinion ). When we have different opinions,

we will listen carefully to each other. Only communication can cross this inevitable ( unavoidable ) gap. 28. It has been my dream to travel around the world since I entered senior high school. My English teacher, who often travels abroad, often told us a lot about his travel experiences. His vivid description of his traveling experiences aroused my interest in traveling. Besides, whenever I have free time, I read travelers' tales and guidebooks. To fulfill my dream, I am determined to do my best to learn English well and find a part-time job after the entrance exam to save money. 29. I grew up in a small village of the country. At that time, there was a clean brook near my home. We often went swimming and fishing in the brook in summer. Now the water in the brook is so dirty that fish can hardly live in it. I wonder when I can see again the beautiful scene in my childhood. 30.(Tina) I have many friends, and Tina is the best one of mine. We did not know each other until we went to senior high school. Even since then, we have been living together. She is much taller than I. And we are different in many ways. For example, she is intelligent, diligent and popular. But there is nothing good to speak of about me. I can learn many things from her. I hope our friendship will last forever. 31. The telephone plays a very important role ( part ) in the modern society. In the past, people kept in touch with each other by letter. However, people had to wait a long time to receive news from their friends. Nowadays ( At present ), because of the telephone, we can talk with our friends within seconds. The telephone has had a great influence on our lives. 32. Teenagers like to go to the movies but tickets for good movies are hard to get. Therefore, some would rather sit at home reading than fight the crowds to see a movie in the holidays. Everybody

knows that reading is to the mind as food is to the body. However, we should have the ability to distinguish between good books and bad ones. Only by reading good books can we get benefit from them. There is no doubt about it. ( = There is no doubt that only by reading good books can we get benefit from them. = Undoubtedly, only by reading good books can we get benefit from them. ) 33. I am often very much afraid to cross a busy street; I always walk to the traffic light and use the crosswalk. But many times I have been frightened by the speeding vehicles which run through the red light. Therefore, when the light changes to green, I still need to look both directions to check the traffic. Once at the intersection near Chien-kuo High School, I saw an accident: a pedestrian was knocked down by a truck and then run over by a motorcycle coming from behind. For safety, it is very important for everyone to obey the traffic rules. 34. It is important to take the right clothes when you go out on a journey. If you are going to a cold place, be sure to bring warm clothes. But if you are visiting a hot place, you will need light rather than heavy clothes. Besides, you may wear fine clothes in the city but comfortable clothes in the country. Finally, remember not to carry too many clothes no matter when you are traveling. 35. My classmate Mary is a good student and she is seated next to me in the classroom. She is characterized by being exceptionally diligent ( industrious ) ( hard-working ) and helpful. That's why she is so popular with us. However, she easily gets nervous ( tense ) and moreover, she is often in a hurry. That's why she is nicknamed Hurry. 36. Of ( Among ) all the exercises, I like jogging best. Jogging will do you a lot of good. It will make the heart stronger and help you lose weight. However, when jogging, you should wear a good pair of jogging shoes to prevent your feet from being ( getting ) injured ( wounded ). Moreover, if you are a beginner, don't go too fast. 37.

Yangmingshan is a vacation resort noted ( famous ) for its beautiful scenery. Last Sunday all my family went there for a picnic. When we arrived at our destination, we saw many other tourists there. Besides watching beautiful flowers like azaleas and cherry blossoms, we also sang songs, played games and had the foods and drinks Mummy had prepared for us. We didn't start on our way home until the sun had set. 38. Everybody has his own dream, and I am no exception. I am fond of singing a song in my childhood, hoping to become a singer. However, I make up my mind to enter college now, and to major in English. 39. We all know that laughter is essential to individual and society. However, we can less and less laughter around us in our daily life. If we learn to laugh a little more, the relationship among people will be improved. After all, laughter is the best medicine, and it can improve our physical and mental health. It can also bring us a pleasant atmosphere and make our society more harmonious. 40. Almost all students look forward to weekends, and Andy is no exception. He used to sleep off the weekend or he went to movies with classmates. However, he will not be able to waste any time now; he studies in the library to make the most of the weekend. ( = However, he can not afford to waste any time now; he makes the best use of his weekend by studying in the library. ) He has changed his studying attitudes ( He has make a change in learning attitudes. ) He will not be above asking any questions when he comes across any difficulty ( problem ). He firmly believes ( is firmly convinced ) that success belongs to those who do their best. ( exert their best ) ( do their their utmost ) 41. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is my favorite book. The character I like the most in this story is Harry Potter. I went to see the Harry Potter movie with my classmates last week. There were many people in line to buy tickets. The pictures on the movie screen were almost the same as those I had imagined reading the book.

42. Stop Neglecting Public Safety 64 1989 KTV The fire that took 64 lives at Taichung's Welcome Restaurant has shocked people on this island. The problem of public safety has become the focus of public attention again. The Taichung fire incident has revealed the widespread disregard for public safety in recent years. Since 1989, many disastrous fires have occurred in such commercial establishments as restaurants, KTV centers, and large barbershops. Heavy casualties in these big fires were mostly caused by the neglect of fire prevention. For example, the furnishings of some buildings were made of flammable materials. Therefore, to improve safety measures to prevent similar accidents, the authorities concerned should enforce relevant laws and regulations firmly and responsibly. 43.Is It Important to Learn English? In my opinion, English is a must, for nowadays English is regarded as the most universal of all the languages in the world. In international affairs, English has played a very important part in the communication among people from different countries. Like it or not, English has become a common language in international conferences, world scholarship and world trade, let alone in global traveling. As far as a student like me is concerned, to master English has become all the more important for my pursuit of knowledge and higher education. Most of the latest information about technology and science is first printed in English. I have no alternative but to have a good command of English to acquire the first-hand information. 44. A Better Tomorrow Whether it is called paradise, the Garden of Eden, or Shangrila, man's pursuit of a better tomorrow is deeply rooted in his dream. Throughout history, human beings have struggled to bring hostile environment to their knees to better their life. We are sent here on a mission ~~ to create a better tomorrow for ourselves and our posterity, and to reunite the split world. We hope that someday wars, social injustice, discriminations and oppressions of all kinds will be

eliminated. And the better tomorrow will light up every life on earth, giving us hope, strength and inspiration to make more contribution to our civilization. 45. Causes of Traffic Accidents Careless and reckless driving is one of the major causes of traffic accidents. Because of the negligence of drivers, lots of precious lives have been lost. Violation of traffic rules can not only cause traffic accidents, but also endanger the lives of pedestrians as well as those of drivers. Running through red lights and speeding are common traffic violations. Driving without a license, without keeping a proper distance or without slowing down at crossroads may also lead to car accidents. A large number of accidents are caused by drunken driving, and physical and mental fatigue of drivers. Bad road conditions and heavy traffic as well as mechanical problems may also result in traffic accidents. On the other hand, pedestrians who jaywalk and disregard traffic signals are also responsible for accidents. 46. Ways to Soothe Our Worries In our daily lives we are weighed down with heavy work load, pressure from work or studies, and tension. Sometimes it is only inevitable that we feel depressed and worried. To put our emotional life in order, we have to find out ways to soothe our worries or anxieties. It helps to get outside, taking a long walk and clearing our head. And sometimes sharing our worries with friends is the best method of easing them. In addition, listening to music, going to the movies, taking exercise, or talking things over with a close friend also helps. They can provide an outlet for our turbulent feelings. There is no denying that reading humorous stories or biographies of great men can cheer us up, too. The deeds of those heroes and sages are likely to give us confidence and strength to help us through difficulties. 47. What We Should Teach Our Children?

Our education puts more emphasis on the teaching of skills and technical knowledge than on the development of standards of right and wrong. The neglect of moral education has a negative impact on social stability. Children who don't have a clear idea of how to behave toward others can become juvenile delinquents. In the light of this, instead of concentrating their attention on students' scholastic achievements, teachers should promote moral education. To accomplish this goal, the educational system should be reformed so that schools will not follow an entrance exam-oriented policy. 48. Love of Nature Few people can always be confined to the concrete jungle without feeling charmed with nature. Indeed, nature has the functions of calming our spirit and soothing our mood. Therefore, in spare time everyone should open the window of the heart to appreciate the beauty of nature. After all, we are human beings with flesh and blood, not emotionless machines. Nature is just like a loving mother, ( who is ) always willing to accept her children. 49. Idol Worship We have to admit that it's quite natural for teenagers to worship idols. In the course of their growth, there should be some people for them to emulate and identify with. Those who are the most popular with them are often singers, movie actors and actresses, and sports stars. Some parents worry that their children may blindly pursue some superficial phenomena and ignore the deeper essence of things. Under normal circumstances, however, they will grow out of this type of idol worship in time. 50. Crack Down on Drag Racing For the past few weeks, drag racing in the nighttime on the weekend has become a big headache to the police. this type of violation of laws is different from the past juvenile delinquency. On the one hand, drag racing on the street has endangered many of the innocent pedestrians and drivers. On the other hand, it amounts to fueling the already chaotic traffic. No wonder that the authorities concerned would pledge to strictly crack down on this illegal conduct. 51.Is Television a Blessing or a Curse?

The invention of television has always been regarded as a great progress in modern technology. Indeed, it has brought us a lot of visual enjoyment and broadened out horizon of knowledge. In order to cater to the tastes of the public, however, the quality of many programs is declining. There are even some programs ( that are ) full of pornography and violence, which are misleading to teenagers. Besides making money, mass communication media should also assume the responsibility of social education. 52. On Thrift It is a widely-accepted view that thrift is a virtue. But in a commercially-oriented society, it is often overlooked or even twisted. People in the past wouldn't easily throw away any household appliances. They seemed to feel that nothing was ever easily gained, and everything should be cherished. This thought alone is well worthy of modern people's careful realization and reflection. 53. Technology And Humanism For the past few decades, the rate of technological progress has increased with the passing of each day. However, the problems triggered by technological development have also emerged one after another. The existence of technology aims at improving human lives and enhancing human welfare. It is undesirable to ignore humanity and cripple humanism because of the abuse of technology. Therefore, it is an important issue to strike a balance between technology and humanism. 54. The leader of that party is ready to form the cabinet. There will be a general election at the end of the year. Communism is out of date. People took to streets to protest against the hike in prices. In a totalitarian country, human rights are abused. The spirit of democracy lies in liberty, equality and fraternity. Bus drivers went on strike last week. 55.~1 He has an aptitude for music. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are four basic language skills. Language is a tool of communication. Use the words and idioms that you have memorized in the daily conversation. It is useless to learn grammatical rules by rote. He has lost interest in

learning English. He is proficient in English. Learning English brings us many benefits. 56. We must show more thought for our family. Mutual understanding is a good way to bridge the generation gap. Tolerance helps maintain the harmony in the family. Parents work hard to make both ends meet. Filial piety and parental love bind family members together. A harmonious family makes everything possible. We should meet our family halfway. Parents have deep affection for their children. 57.~1 Our train crashed into a freight train. Pedestrians must cross the street at a street crossing. The crowds in the rush hours are terrible. That car collided headlong with a truck. You cannot practice driving at some place where there is heavy traffic. No entry. This is one way only. All vehicles keep to the right. If you drive without a driver's license, you'll be fined. That car ran over a dog. On our way home, we had a flat tire. 58. Gloomy people are likely to suffer from nervous breakdown. Humorous stories provide us with outlets for venting our emotions. Children are taught to hold back their emotions. Keeping pleasant benefits oneself as well as others. A constructive philosophy of life has a positive effect of life. An optimistic person always wears a smiling face. People keep pessimistic people at a distance. Don't always pull a long face. 59. Historically speaking, Tibet is a part of China. Captain Webb made history by being the first man to swim from England to France. History sometimes repeats itself. Unofficial history tells us a lot of interesting stories about great men. On holidays, famous historic scenes are crowded with tourists. The art of biblical miniature painting has a history of a thousand years. This television play is adapted from a historical novel. Those who struggle and die for democracy and freedom are the makers of history. Some biographies or autobiographies distort history. Since the beginning of recorded history, human beings have worked hard continually for a better life.

60. Though he has settled abroad for many years, he remains concerned about ( for ) the war-torn fatherland. Compared with his well-to-do neighbor, he could barely keep his body and soul together. They are enjoying a happy life and prosperous business. It's agreeable to stroll along the tree-lined street with breeze gently sweeping. We simply cannot stand the urban crowdedness and hustle and bustle. Although the city is densely populated, everybody feels alienated and indifferent to everything around himself. What I miss most is the country people's hospitality and the easy lifestyles. It always renders me refreshed to recall those memories of the carefree childhood. 61. Many young people begin to smoke out of curiosity. Once you get addicted to smoking, it's very hard to quit. Cigarette advertisers always try their best to convince people that smoking seems graceful and charming. We can find "No Smoking" signs in more and more public places. To the major tobacco exporters, profit is more important than the consumers' health. Non-smokers long exposed to second-hand smoke suffer more harm than smokers. It is essential to adopt more stringent regulations to ban ( prohibit ) smoking in all indoor places. In the last analysis, smoking is a symbol of backwardness, insanitariness, and selfishness. 62.~2 The habit of reading should be formed ( developed, cultivated ) as early as possible. It calls for years of efforts to master a foreign language. The more time you spend ( in ) previewing and reviewing , the more likely you are to integrate what you have learned. Taking notes is one of the ways of enhancing your study efficiency. Learning to deal with the routines in your daily lives isn't easy. The most difficult thing about learning is to put theory into practice. Teaching and learning are often interactive. Realizing truth, goodness, and beauty is the ultimate goal of learning. 63.

A policy has to be evaluated on its practicability before it is made. In the life journey, we cannot but face numerous choices. When faced with a thorny problem, you especially have to cooperate with each other to seek a resolution. The stronger the motivation of learning, the higher the achievement. If you make preparations in doing everything, you will stand more chance to succeed. Once you are determined to turn over a new leaf, you should stick to the principle without faltering at all. Leaders should be broad-minded enough to tolerate different opinions. The United States of America and Vietnam are negotiating on entering into diplomatic ties and developing bilateral trade. 64. I am still too young to have a definite ambition in life. It is not easy to state clearly my philosophy of life. Most people look forward to a rosy future, while I only hope for a modest life. As long as you are determined to cooperate with others, you are sure to improve your interpersonal relationships. Those who are used to idleness cannot persist in anything they do. Recently, I have always found myself lagging behind the schedule, not so dynamic as I used to be. 65. Everyone has some secrets that he doesn't want to reveal to others. For the time being, obesity is his biggest worry, because he feels it will affect his social life. Excessive suppression of emotions is not healthy, as that will cause hypertension. You look worried; what's bothering you? There must be some ways to relieve unknown worries, such as exercise, traveling, and reading. If modern people can learn to maintain an innocent heart, that would be the greatest blessing. What with shyness and what with inexperience, he is afraid of meeting new people. In the long run, working under proper pressure is more efficient. 66.~1 For the past 5 years the way people eat has undergone a drastic change. In the past, we used to

live on rice or noodles. However, nowadays people prefer to go to the fast food store to enjoy hamburgers and fried chickens. This explains why more and more fast food stores are opened in Taiwan. As a matter of fact, it has become a trend to dine in fast food restaurants in many parts of the world. It is not that fast food is more delicious. Compared with Chinese food, fast food is rather coarse. Besides, fast food is rich in fats, high calories, cholesterol and sodium. All these things are closely related to the heart disease and do harm to health. But, despite these defects, fast food still appeals to a lot of people, especially the teenagers. After all, it is both convenient and fashionable to dine in fast food restaurants. 67.~2 C D It goes without saying that food is closely related to health. Food provides us with various kinds of nutrition. Vegetables are rich in vitamin C. Beef contains high calories. Vitamin D in milk does good to our bones. Only my means of eating proper and balanced food can we stay healthy. Most modern people lead a busy and strained life. They tend to ignore the importance of diet. More and more people prefer to have fast food. Convenient as fast food is, it doesn't meet the demand of nutrition. Fast food is called junk food because it contains too many fats, calories and too much cholesterol. Therefore, if possible, we should avoid dining in the fast food store. 68.~1 With the development of economy, the people on Taiwan are better off than before. For the past ten years, the way we wear has undergone a drastic change. In the past, we used to wear coarse clothes made of synthetic fiber. However, nowadays we prefer to wear clothes of high qualities. Expensive as these clothes are, a lot of people can afford to purchase them. As a matter of fact, some people wear only the clothes with famous brands no matter how high their prices may be. Is it necessary to buy expensive clothing? In my opinion, as long as our clothes are clean, comfortable and nicelooking, we should not care whether they have well-known brands. We should know better than to spend too much money on clothes. After all, expensive clothing does not necessarily mean that we are superior to others. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, I seldom follow the trend to buy expensive clothes with famous brands.

69.~2 For the past 20 years, blue jeans have become the most popular clothing in the world. Male or female, old or young, people all over the world enjoy wearing blue jeans. Blue jeans represent part of the American culture. The United States is a democratic country. In this country, freedom and equality are greatly stressed. Everyone is born equal, and everyone has the right and freedom to seek for his dream. Blue jeans can best stand for such a spirit. Dressed in blue jeans, people look young and vigorous. What is more, we no longer judge others by their clothing. Blue jeans won't show how rich we are. Nor will they let on what our social status is. In other words, blue jeans narrow the gap and obscure the difference among people. Naturally, it has become a world-wide trend to wear blue jeans. 70.~1 Taiwan is a densely populated country. With the increase of the population, the space which people can live in becomes smaller and smaller. Inevitably, the price of the land is always soaring. As a result, the price of the house becomes extremely high. A lot of people toil hard all the year round, but they can't afford to buy a small house. This sad fact depresses a lot of people. After all, if our efforts are destined to bear no fruit, what is the use of working hard? Nowadays, housing has become a serious social problem. On no account can this problem be ignored. If people become hopeless and stop working hard, our society won't make progress any more. This will do great damage to our society. Therefore, it is time our government took proper measures to solve housing problems. 71.~2

With the development of economy, city life becomes widely different from country life. City people lead the nervous and busy life. They have to bear the heavy traffic, dirty air and various kinds of din. Compared with city life, country life is more peaceful and relaxing. Besides, the life close to nature is more healthful for people. Fresh air, soft breeze, beautiful trees and flowers are always refreshing. However, not all people enjoy living in the country. Despite its defects, city life still attracts more and more people to move into the city. The city offers more work opportunities to people. It is easier to earn a living in the city. Moreover, there are more public facilities available in the city, such as schools, libraries, galleries and concert halls. As far as education and entertainment are concerned, city life is still better than country life. 72.~2 All the cities in the world are faced with some difficult problems. One of them is heavy traffic. For city people, traffic jams are a nightmare which they cannot get rid of. Besides, it is a painful thing for most drivers to look for parking space. In order to solve these traffic problems, city governments used to broaden roads and build more parking lots. However, these measures don't seem to work well. Because more and more people move to the city, and because a lot of people are rich enough to afford private cars, broad roads and large parking lots are soon crowded with various kinds of vehicles. Nowadays, more and more cities ease their heavy traffic by building subways or mass transit systems. They are not only convenient but also fast. We are glad Taipei's mass transit system is under way now. In the future, the traffic of Taipei will be greatly improved. 73.~3 It is everyone's duty to follow traffic rules, including pedestrians and drivers. On the part of pedestrians, while walking, they had better walk on the sidewalk. When they want to walk across the road, they are supposed to make use of the overpass and underpass, or walk along the zebra crossing. It is extremely risky to jay walk. Those who do so should be fined. One the part of drivers, on no account can they run through the red light and overspeed lest car accidents should

happen. Besides, to drive cars after drinking should be strictly prohibited. According to the statistics, it is the main cause of most car accidents. If both pedestrians and drivers can observe traffic rules, car accidents will decrease, and the loss of lives will be reduced to a minimum. 74. My high school English teacher is the most unforgettable person in my life. He not only teaches English very diligently but also treats his students extremely kindly. In fact, he is the teacher who influences me most. At first my English was not good. Whenever there was an English examination, I always failed in it. However, my English teacher was not disappointed in me at all. On the contrary, he often made use of time to encourage me and teach me how to learn English well. Because he was so enthusiastic, I could not but study harder than ever. As a result, I made great progress in English, which gave me a great sense of achievement. I am much obliged to my teacher for his kind instruction. Though I have graduated from high school now, I know I'll miss my English teacher forever. 75. My father is a successful businessman. He works very busily, but he always finds time to keep me company. When we have a chat, he will ask me about my school work and encourage me to study harder. Though my father looks very serious, he is an amiable man at heart. He seldom loses his temper. When I make mistakes, he won't blame me. On the contrary, he will tell me patiently where I am wrong, and ask me never to make the same mistake again. Therefore, there is no generation gap between my father and me. I am willing to tell him what I have thought and done. When I encounter difficulties, he is the first person that I think of. As his son, I feel extremely fortunate. 76. My mother is the kindest person in the world. She loves her children very much and is always loving and tender to them. Needless to say, there is no mother but loves her children. However,

my mother's kindness is unlike other mothers'. My mother is the most gentle female that I have ever seen. She never gets angry or loses her temper. When we make mistakes, she always tells us where we are wrong kindly and patiently. She teaches us how to tell right from wrong instead of scolding or punishing us. As her children, we feel extremely happy and fortunate. 77. In spite of the fact that I know many friends, John is the one that I like best. Because we have some interests in common, we often go to the countryside to paint pictures and have a good time together. We often talk about our ambitions and encourage each other to realize our dreams. We hope we can become distinguished artists in the future. Besides, John is also the most generous person that I have ever seen. He is glad to help others and ready to forgive others' mistakes. No wonder those who know him all like him. To have such a good friend, I always feel extremely fortunate. 78. A good book is to a person what sunshine is to darkness. It can enlighten our mind, broaden our horizon, cultivate our character and console our spirit. And, the more we read, the more we benefit. We'll have a better understanding of life and have the greater courage to meet any difficulty or obstacle. It is no exaggeration at all to say that good books are both our best teachers and friends. Therefore, no matter how busy we may be, we should get into the habit of reading. 79. As we know, we are living in an age of knowledge explosion. If we want to survive in the world where the competition of living is keener and keener, we have no alternative but to absorb more knowledge to elevate, expand and strengthen our abilities. After all, gone is the day when one could depend only upon his physical strength to seek for achievements in the world. In the future, knowledge is bound to play an important part in deciding whether we can succeed or not. To go to college means that we have the chance to receive advanced education and acquire sufficient knowledge. In the light of this, I am of the firm belief that I have to study hard so that I may enter a good college.

80. English is the last subject that I like. Compared with other subjects, English is rather difficult to learn. As far as we know, if we want to master a foreign language, we are obliged to practice speaking it. Unfortunately, there are few people who speak English in the environment where we live. In other words, I cannot often practice what I have learned. Consequently, in spite of the fact that I have learned a great many new words, idioms and grammar rules by heart. I don't know how to use them and before long I forget them completely. It is natural that I don't make any progress in English. Even though I have learned English for six years, I still can't speak English well. My efforts don't bear any fruit. When it comes to learning English, my heart is always full of frustrations. That is the reason why I have a great dislike for English. 81. Examinations are necessary. Through examinations, students can find out what they have learned and what they have not learned. Without examinations, they would not know how to improve their learning. Similarly, only by means of examinations can teachers understand the level of their students. In the light of this, we may well say the system of examinations benefit both students and teachers. However, too many examinations are harmful. They add to the burdens of the student and the teacher. For the sake of examinations, they cannot but give up their recreation. What is worse, many students burn the midnight oil whenever there is an examination. Besides, the results of the examinations always bring about the worry and anxiety of the students. If their life is filled with examinations, they are destined to live unhappily. Therefore, just for the sake of students' health and happiness. I hope there won't be too many examinations in the school. 82. Cigarettes contain nicotine and tar. They do harm to health. Health is the most valuable thing that one has. Therefore, we should know better than to contract the bad habit of smoking. 83.

Sleep is closely related to health. Only when we have sufficient sleep and rest and rest can we stay fit. Therefore, we should live a regular life and avoid sitting up. 84. Mathematics has been my headache. Hard as I work, I seldom get high marks in math examinations. That is the reason why I dislike mathematics. 85. Happiness does not lie in wealth. No matter how rich one may be, he can't live happily without love. Nor can he live a meaningful life if he loses his health. 86. For the past 6 months, I have worked hard. I often burn the midnight oil. Fortunately, I have made a lot of progress. It is conceivable that my heart is filled with joy. Studying is no longer a painful thing. 87. More and more young people prefer to wear the sneakers with famous brands. It has become a trend. The function of shoes is to protect our feet from being hurt. As long as the shoes are comfortable to wear, we should not care whether they have well-known brands. 88. With the development of economy, people are better-off. However, their life is busier and busier. They tend to ignore the importance of eating breakfast. They often go to school or work without eating breakfast. No wonder a lot of people get the stomach disease. 89. Last Sunday we went for an outing. We got on the bus in high spirits. Arriving at the destination, we found that the sky was overcast. Before long, it began to rain cats and dogs. It goes without saying that all of us were soaked to the skin. 90. There used to be a lot of wildlife in Taiwan; however, with the increase of the population and owing to the killing of the hunters, wild animals have become fewer and fewer. Some rare wild animals even become extinct. To slay wild animals is a savage deed and does great harm to the image of our country. Therefore, it is time that the government took proper steps to protect wild animals.

91. Living in the country has many advantages. One of them is that country life is more economical. In the country, the expense of living is lower. Food and louses are not so expensive as those in the city. Another advantage of country life is that it is more tranquil. The pace of living is slower in the country. You won't hear the deafening noise of the city. 92. Human beings come from nature. It is conceivable that it is man's instinct to get close to nature. The spectacular scene of nature is not only relaxing but also refreshing. Therefore, we should make use of time to approach nature. 93. When it comes to the problem of traffic, the most important thing is that we have to observe traffic rules. If pedestrians don't jaywalk, and it drivers don't be speeding and run through the red light, car accidents will be reduced to a minimum. Life is valuable. It does not pay off to get killed in car accidents. Therefore, we should have the consensus of following traffic rules. 94. The car is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. It makes our life more convenient. However, the car has also brought a lot of problems. One of them is air pollution. The exhaust fume belched by the car contaminates air seriously. Another problem is the traffic jam. At the rush hour, we have to waste a lot of time on the road. Therefore, we should not encourage people to purchase cars. Otherwise, someday our cities will be choked with cars and the polluted air will endanger our health. 95. The motorcycle is a convenient transportation. However, once the accident happens, the motorcyclist is usually seriously injured. Therefore, it is extremely important for the motorcyclist to wear the helmet. The government should enact the regulation strictly. 96. My friend, John, has a brand new motorcycle. He rides it to school every day. I envy him very

much because he does not have to take the crowded bus. However, John's motorcycle ran into a taxi 3 days ago. Though it was not a fatal accident, John's left leg was broken. Seeing John lie on the bed in hospital, I told myself that I would rather take the bus than ride the motorcycle. 97. Last Sunday I was late for school. In order to save time, I did something that I should not do. I jaywalked instead of walking on the footbridge. All of a sudden, a racing motorcyclist rushed towards me. At that time, I was scared to death. I thought I would be hit by the motorcycle. Fortunately, the motorcyclist stopped the motorcycle in time. Otherwise, I would have been badly hurt. However, that terrible experience has taught me a valuable lesson. I dare not violate traffic rules any more. 98. We all like to get along with John because he is an amiable person. He is always ready to help others. No wonder those who know him all like him. 99. Mother never scolds us or uses harsh words. When we make mistakes, she always reminds us to be more careful. 100. Grandfather is in his seventies, and is still strong and healthy. He has a loud voice and a big laugh. He is a jolly person and likes to make friends. 101. Our Chinese teacher is in his thirties. He is kind and friendly in nature. He always wears a smile on his face. 102. My friend, John, is a young man of medium height and stature. He is neither fat nor thin. He is very fond of sports. He is good at playing basketball in particular. 103.

Our family is a small one. It consists of my father, mother, sister and me. My father is a manager of a computer company. He works diligently and his company does well in trade. My mother is a housewife. Her work is to run the household and take care of us. My elder sister, a student of National Normal University, majors in music. She is good at playing the piano, and hopes to become an outstanding pianist in the future. I am a high school student. Though I am not so talented as my elder sister, my memory is rather good. I get good grades in the courses of Chinese, English, history and geography. It won't be difficult for me to go to college. I wish to major in economy and become a famous economist. Our family are very close and love each other. To have such a family, I feel extremely fortunate. 104. In China, Confucius is the most respected sage. His thought is the main stream of the Chinese culture, and has a far-reaching effect on many oriental countries. The teachings of Confucius are centered upon charity. It means "Don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you." Besides, Confucius is also a great teacher. He taught 3000 students no matter what their background was. Confucius' though is beneficial to mankind. We should put Confucius' teachings into practice and introduce them to the western countries. 105. Reading books can broaden the range of knowledge, cultivate our character and enlighten our minds. If we want to be useful people, it is necessary for us to read more books. Therefore, no matter how busy we may be, we should spend at least two hours reading books every day. Perhaps some people may think that they are too busy to find time for reading books. However, in my opinion, whether one is busy or not, he can always spare time to read books as long as he has the mind to do so. 106. Perhaps some students get nervous on the night before an examination. They burn the midnight oil and cannot have a good sleep. As far as I am concerned, I am not worried about examinations because I always study hard and have a good understanding of what the teachers have taught. As usual, I go to bed at eleven o'clock on the eve of an examination so that I may have the energy to

cope with the examination the next day. I my opinion, it is harmful to sit up too late, and it doesn't pay to prepare for the examination at the expense of health. Therefore, I suggest that students should pay more attention to their school work even though there are no examination. In this way, they don't have to stay up too late on the eve of an examination. 107. Newspapers are one of the most important communication media in our life. Newspapers can provide us with the important information we need; therefore, I make it a rule to read the newspapers every day. By reading the newspapers, I can understand what is happening in our country and in many parts of the world. In other words, the information in the newspapers not only broadens the range of my knowledge but also enables me to keep up with the times. Besides, there are some good literary works in the supplement of the newspapers. No wonder reading the newspapers has played an important part in my life. 108. To cultivate the habit of reading is the most important thing in one's life. Life is transient. After those whom we love dearly leave us, it is inevitable that we have to face loneliness. In terms of this, books are really our most faithful friends. When we are weak and lonely, the wisdom from books can enlighten us and give us the power to overcome difficulties and setbacks. Besides, reading is also the main source of one's joy. When we acquire knowledge from books, naturally we will experience the joy of growth. No other sensual pleasure can compare with the happiness of the mind. Therefore, those who are wise should develop the habit of reading as early as possible. 109. As is known to everybody, television is a marvelous invention. It instructs as well as entertains us. Educational and intellectual programs make us wiser and more knowledgeable. By watching funny programs, we can relieve ourselves of our pressure and tension. Absorbed in the plot of a

TV serial, we will forget our worry and trouble. 110. Did you ever dream of being a respected teacher? Of the teachers who taught you, which one do you think was the most unforgettable? What was it that made him so outstanding and impressive? In my opinion, a good teacher must have patience, but patience alone is not enough to make a good teacher. To sum up, one must have many good merits to be qualified as a teacher. 111. On the early morning of September 21, a violent earthquake happened in the central part of Taiwan. Landslides, collapsed houses caused serious losses of lives and property. Earthquakes are natural disasters which cannot be predicted. We should stress emphasis on quake drills and the structure of buildings on ordinary days. In this way, the damage brought about by earthquakes can be reduced to the minimum. 112. Transportation today seems to be getting faster and faster. Not very long ago, a trip around the world was long and dangerous. Now a jet plane can go around the world in hours. In the near future, even the trip to the moon may also be possible. What I am worried about is whether we are prepared enough for the coming of the new century. 113. After women's liberation, most modern women have been conscious of their obligations and the roles they have to play at home or in society. They know how to make use of born features such as patience, carefulness, and diligence and perform as well as men. They are becoming more and more important and have influence in every field. The increase in female participation in the workplace has greatly changed the lifestyle of numerous families. But in Taiwan, most married women who have their own careers are still devoted to their husbands and children. 114. I have formed a habit of reading newspapers since I was young. Newspapers not only provide me

with the latest information but also satisfy my desire to know. Editorials and comic strips appeal to me most. The atmosphere was so tense that everyone was scared to death, including me. I was too nervous to remember what I had said in the impromptu speech. It is caused by factories that burn coal, oil or gas. (2)These factories send smoke high into the air and some of the unhealthy things in the smoke may come down with the rain hundreds of miles away. (3)This kind of rain is full of acid chemicals.

(4)Scientists find that the acid rain kills a lot of trees and makes people and animals less healthy.(5)Now scientists try to work out some ways to solve this thorny problem. 146.(1)(2) (3) (4)(5) (1)The aim of education in general is to prepare students for life in the world.(2)The preparation given by a university is a special training of the mind.(3)In the science, we learn how to draw general conclusions from various facts.(4)In the humanities, we obtain a deeper understanding of human life from the reading of various authors.(5)Thus, the chief aim of university education is to help the students to have a wide diversity of work and interest. 147.() (Air Pollution)Of all kinds of pollution, I hate air pollution most. The rapid growth of population, industry, and the number of automobiles has made the air in the cities of Taiwan seriously polluted. There are chiefly three factors which are responsible for deteriorating air quality: polluting factories, improper garbage disposal, and an excessive number of motor vehicles, especially the last factor. A heavy fine should be imposed on the owner of the vehicle found emitting excessive exhaust fumes. In addition, the authorities concerned should encourage the use of public transportation by building more rapid transit systems. In shout, the pollution problem has become so critical that nothing but concrete, positive, and strong action can solve it. 148. (Energy Conservation)As we know, the rapid growth of energy use is likely to exhaust the worlds energy. And here in Taiwan, opinions are still divided on the construction of the fourth nuclear power plant. As a result, we are faced with energy shortages, especially a serious electricity shortage. Many scientists have been trying hard to develop new energy sources and design more

efficient power plants and engines. And what steps should we ordinary people take to conserve energy? Of course, there are many things we can do. For example, we could travel by bus and train rather than by car. Businesses and families could lower their thermostats in winter and raise them in summer and turn off unnecessary lights. Never watching TV unless there are really good programs is also another good way to conserve electricity. In short, we should take such conservation measures; otherwise, we shall be sorry in the near future.
