What are barriers to communication?

A barrier prevents something or someone or makes it harder for them to perform what they are doing. A barrier to communication prevents people in a certain organization from communicating with other departments internally or externally. No matter how good the communication system in an organisation is, unfortunately barriers can and do often occur. These are caused by many factors including barriers like health problems of staff, equipment, technology, poor management or something like psychical issues regarding staff. Examples of barriers to communication 1. Distance is one of the most common barriers to communication. It happens if people that are trying to communicate are far away from each other and this prevents them from doing it. 2. Old or broken equipment is a barrier to communication as well. If a system fails then no one in the organization will be able to exchange informations. 3. Introducing a new system can be a barrier as well. If staff in a particular organization is not trained to work on the new equipment then the communication will be impossible 4. Language differences Is also a barrier to communication. Two people that speak different languages wont be able to talk to each other.

Held on 20.10.09 at Lewisham College commencing at 11:00 Those present were as follows: Vanessa Mulllings Emmanuel Steven Pawel Trembecki Malgorzata Sidorowicz The chairman was Pawel Trembecki In this meeting we talked about attributes. Steven listed such attributes as writing, listening, interpreting info which are very 8 Communication and employability assignment one Sorie Rezakhani

Pawel Trembecki BTEC National Diploma IT practitioners Communication and employability Group A important in every job, because without writing or listening ability no one would be able to work. Interpreting info is needed to understand what task has been given. Emmanuel has given few attributes like punctuality, communicativeness or confidence. These attributes are needed everywhere as every employer wants his employees to come to work on time and to be confident when taking and dealing with new tasks. My attributes are being nice, not getting distracted and having courage to work which is very needed to take on new tasks. If someone gets distracted then it prevents them from achieving their goals. There are many IT related jobs and few of them are: helpdesk, receptionist, IT technician, admin. Helpdesk person has access to basic informations about company to let someone who doesnt know find out about some things. Receptionist is a person who directs guests in a company or workers where to go. IT technician solves software issues, fixes hardware and helps maintain IT equipment. Admin is in charge of network and controls the users and access for them in the company. There are some weaknesses such as no confidence, lack of concentration or problems with subject such as maths and English. To over come no confidence a person needs to speak louder and have more eye to eye contact to become closer with people and their needs. Lack of concentration is caused by many factors and to over come this a person could be taken access to facebook or be given motivation of a reward after finishing a task. Maths and English are subjects which could be researched and learnt with a little bit of courage. Date of next meeting: January 2010

on how to overcome certain barriers to communication

There are certain barriers to communication which Ive talked about before and here are few tips on how to overcome these barriers to maintain a successful communication between people, departments in a company and companies. As we know there are few different types of barriers to communication. I will give a few examples of them and give few tips on how to deal with them. 1. One of the problems is distance. Two persons far from each other cannot perform any conversation which in turn prevents them from communicating. To overcome that some time ago there had been introduced many technologies allowing people to communicate even if far away from each other. Examples of these are Emails, mobile phones, letters. These allow people to talk to each other from distance. 2. another barrier to communication is old or broken equipment which prevents staff in particular organisation from exchanging information with another organisation. To deal with such problem a new set of equipment would have to be introduced or current one fixed so it will work properly again. These devices could include computers, fax phones, broadband phones or internetwork devices. 3. Introducing a new system in an organisation could prevent staff working there from communicating as they might not be able to use it. For example there could be new operating systems on computers or new technology solutions on internet or in a company like new computers or such electronic devices. To deal with this problem the staff should be trained to use such new technology and should be taught how to use communication means together with them. 4. There is another barrier to communication and it is one of the most common ones. It is a language difference barrier. If a person tries to communicate with another person or an organisation in other country they would not be able to talk to each other. Best way to deal with this problem is to learn another language which will allow people from different countries to speak and whats more important understand each other.
