Bullying A very good morning to Mr. Fadzilah and my fellow friends. Today, I would like to talk about Bullying.

The article title states exactly what the article talks about, the many different cases of bullying and violence in schools. The title tells you exactly what to expect from the abstract but does not give away any information on what it includes. The author did a good job deciding on the title because although it is simple, it grabs your attention, it certainly did mine. Approximately 12, 8-10 year old children commit suicide every year because they are victims of bullying. Whereas 1.3 million children a year bully others. What is bullying? As defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, one who hurts or intimidates others. This assault may occur in two principle forms, verbal or physical. There are specific reasons why bullying happens and specific solutions that could help save as many as 12 lives a year. Bullying is a very common happening among young children so the title having the word bully in it, draws your attention. It could have been a little more creative but I do like the title and feel that it is both effective and appropriate. The purpose of the study is evident and can clearly and easily be derived from the title of the article. The author, Dawn Pennington, uses a plethora of resources to conduct her research and makes very good use of the research of other specialists.The abstract is very informative, interesting and gives people who don't know too much about the topic some credible knowledge to go with. I appreciated the way that Pennington began the abstract. She used a well known tragedy in the shootings at Columbine to grab readers' attention. I would say that she accomplished her mission in that aspect. However, that incident is actually a severe case of what she is writing about. This is what happens when bullying goes to far and the victims can no longer take it. Columbine being that it was such a large scale retaliation placed a stamp on this country's history. Pennington explores this occurrence and takes the reader on a brief ride through it. She then moves away from the Columbine incident towards incidents of smaller magnitudes. The everyday bullying that goes on in schools all over the country. Pennington, with the help of some of her colleagues describes different theories and reasons why violence occurs in schools. Dennis Murphy feels that it is parents' false sense of security that allows violence to perpetuate. Bullying is not about anger. It is not a conflict to be resolved; its about contempt a powerful feeling of dislike toward someone considered to be worthless, inferior or undeserving of respect. Contempt comes with three apparent psychological advantages that allow kids to harm others without feeling empathy, compassion or shame.

Whatever the reasons or methods, bullying in American schools is detrimental to the physical, intellectual, and emotional growth of the victims; bullied students are undoubtedly the "other" in schools, unable to seek help from school officials, which can leave the victims with emotional problems, and can lead to suicide and Columbine-style violence. One of the largest hurdles in the fight against schoolyard bullying is teachers and school administrators who could not readily identify the bulk of student bullies. From our vantage point as playground observers, we concluded that these poorly regulated children comprised the most visible, but not necessarily the most abusive aggressors on the playground. Bullying or aggressive behavior can be defined in many ways. The child pushes people around, may threaten other students, and can have a bad temper. Usually the student is extremely negative. Bullies perceive everyone is against them. They demean others and humiliate them in public eyes. They look for trouble and their parents may promote their behavior, including fighting. The teachers find that the students talk back to them, and these types of students often have learning disabilities. They are also usually loners with few friends, and if they have friends their the leader of the pack. Bullying or aggressive behavior has many effects on the school-learning environment. Students are frightened by misbehaving bullies so it creates a situation were fear is present in the classroom. It is not fair that children feel uncomfortable, and confrontations occur. Class time is wasted, the learning stops, and class discussions or lectures are interrupted; bad examples are set, and often times the teacher feels he has lost power to the bully. From time to time the teachers may fear the bully themselves. Many things can cause misbehavior. There are three key causes of the misbehaving bully attention, power, and self-confidence. The bully who seeks attention enjoys the attention they get from other students and peers. They may not know the difference between positive and negative attention, and are just happy to get any
