Reading
This week our strategy focus was to use the
text structure and format to better understand
the reading. The children focused on
nonfiction text and practiced using headings,
captions, photographs, and highlighted words
to organize their thinking about the text.
Our focus skill was to identify author's
purpose (to inform, to entertain, to persuade,
and to give directions), so that we could better
understand what we were reading, During
whole and small group instruction, the
students practiced identifying author's
purpose of specific details throughout the
text. They realized that the author could have
written one specific detail for more than one
purpose.
Our word study focus was homophones,
synonyms, and antonyms. The children
practiced finding examples of each of these
within their reading. We discussed how words
are related to each other and why authors
chose to use specific homophones, synonyms,
and antonyms within a story/nonfiction text.
Spelling
Spelling this week focused on the /s/
sound and the /j/ sound. The children
learned that when e, i, or y come after g
or c, the sound of g changes from /g/ to
/j/, and the sound of c changes from /k/ to
/s/. They found examples of these
spelling patterns within their reading.
Writing
Our grammar focus for this week was
singular and plural nouns. The children
learned how to add s to words that end in a
consonant, es to words that end in s, x, ch,
and sh, and ies to words that end in a
consonant and y. During Writer’s
Workshop, we continued working on
paragraph writing and taking our
paragraphs through the writing process.
The children practiced using the class
generated rubric to guide them in their
paragraph writing. The rubric focuses on a
topic sentence that grabs the reader's
attention, three or more details that focus
on the topic, a wrap-up sentence that
restates the topic sentence. Appropriate
conventions, good sentence structure, and
correct spelling.
Science
We will be concluding our study of matter
very soon. The students participated in
many fun investigations and have learned a
great deal about the phases of matter.

will be coming home soon and help your
child review for the upcoming matter test.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED…
3L is starting the "Web" Program from
11:00-11:40. The "Web" Program will
utilize parents to meet and conference with
children about books they've read. This
program has been a "hit" in the past, and
provided many benefits for the students.
