UNCLE WALLY WONDERS

At a time when our president and other politicians tend to apologize for our country's prior actions, here's a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our country. JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US Military out of France as soon as possible. Rusk responded, "Does that include those who are buried here?" DeGaulle did not respond. When in England, at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of 'empire building' by George Bush. He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for In return is enough to bury those that did not return." There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you Heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?" A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?" A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies at a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many Languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?" Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German." Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. "Then you should know enough to have your passport ready." The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it." "Impossible.. Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France!" The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to." I wonder if they appreciate what we did for them... apparently not.

CHAPMAN HISTORICAL MUSEUM TO EXHIBIT S.R. STODDARDS NATURAL VIEWS IN SUMMER 2012 Long considered beautiful photographs of the Adirondack landscape, Seneca Ray Stoddards views also serve well as documents of the plants that inhabited the region in the 19th century. The Chapman Historical Museums summer exhibit, S.R. Stoddards Natural Views, which will run from May 4 through September 2, will feature fifty enlarged photographs of different Adirondack settings lake shores, marshes, meadows, riverbanks and mountainsides. Highlighted in modern color images will be examples of the plants discovered in Stoddards photographs from small flowers to shrubs and trees. Since he was rediscovered in the late 1970s, Stoddards work has been featured in numerous exhibits that explored the history of 19th century life in the Adirondacks. A survey of the 3000 images in the Chapman archives, however, revealed hundreds of images that are purely natural landscapes. The subject matter is the Adirondack environment not great hotels, steamers, camp scenes or other obvious evidence of human activity. The summer 2012 exhibit will examine these photographs as documents of the history of ecological habitats, providing an opportunity to compare the present environment with the past. To address this issue the museum is consulting with Paul Smiths College biologist, Daun Reuter, who will identify botanical species in Stoddards photographs, and exploring 19th century biological fieldwork records housed at the New York State Museum. By bringing attention to a group of Stoddard photographs that have been overlooked but are significant examples of his work, the exhibit will give visitors the opportunity to discover and reflect on the changing environment a topic of urgent concern in the region. Through their experience visitors will gain greater understanding not only to Stoddards photographic vision but also of the natural world of the Adirondacks. STOP IN FOR OUR SPECIALS!

She highlighted the necessity for the ASAs mission of community support in protecting valuable agricultural and forest lands. Her power point presentation also illustrated several of the farms and farm families who are now protected by the conservation easements created with the help of the ASA. The exterior : The exterior of your car is exposed to different elements during different seasons. During the winter, it can be easy to let washing your car fall by the wayside. Your paint job and windshield may accumulate debris from the snow, as well as from the salt used on the streets to melt the snow. This could cause your car to have a cloudy appearance which is not only unattractive, but could also impair your vision. Take your car in for a professional wash so that you can rid your cars exterior of any residue left over from the winter months and pay close attention to your tires, which can also suffer from buildup during the snowy season. Also remember that spring is allergy season. This means that your car will probably be covered in pollen at some point. Pollen build up on your car can not only worsen your allergy symptoms, but impair your vision on the road, so be vigilant about keeping your car washed.

Give your car a thorough inspection This means taking a good look at the underside of your car and inspecting it for any rust or other corrosion caused by the winter months. Winters salt and snow can wreak havoc on the seldom seen parts of your car, and the longer they go undiscovered, the more dangerous and expensive they get. Also pay close attention to your fluid levels. See if you need to change or refill your oil, wiper fluid, coolant and other lubricants to help prepare your car for the warmer months. If you arent comfortable evaluating the condition of your car yourself, take it in to a mechanic that you trust.

The interior Do you carry a sandbag or other heavy object in your trunk to improve how your rear-wheel-drive vehicle handles in the snow? If so, when the snow and ice melt, its time to clean out your trunk. Doing so will improve your gas mileage because you lighten your cars load and this can mean considerable savings at the gas station. You might also want to prepare the interior surfaces and upholstery of your car for more sun exposure. If you have leather seats, use a good leather protector to avoid any cracking and if you have cloth interiors invest in a product that will help avoid fading from sun exposure.
