In a triaxial test on a specimen of clean dry sand, failure occurred when total vertical stress was 423 kPa, the lateral stress was 138 kPa. Find by graphical means the value of of the sand, the normal stress on the failure plane and the inclination of the failure plane to the horizontal. Determine the compressive strength of a clay specimen tested in a fully drained triaxial test, with a consolidation pressure of 70 kPa, if the shear strength parameters with respect to effective stress are c=14 kPa, =18. A sand specimen was tested in a direct shear box at a normal stress of 100 kPa, and failed when shear stress reached 60 kPa. (a) calculate , (b) at what shear stress would the soil fail if the normal stress was 250 kPa? Two vanes, A and B with length to width diameter ratios of 3 to 1 respectively, are each used to make a test at the same depth of a clay layer. Both vanes have a diameter if 50 mm, and the torques were measured to be 42.24 Nm for A and 19.70 Nm for B. Find the values of undrained shear strength on horizontal and vertical planes at this depth. Explain why the undrained shear strength may vary with the orientation of the failure surface. The following parameters are known for a clayey silt:

c=18 kPa, peak=200, A=0.4, B=0.8 Find the pore pressure at the beginning and end of the following stages: a) isotropic consolidation, at a cell pressure of 200 kPa, b) undrained axial shear to failure with a cell pressure raised to 400 kPa Three standard drained triaxial tests were made on a sand at the same chamber pressure of 300 kPa. For three different void ratios of e=0.69, 0.74, 0.79. For the triaxial test , vertical and horizontal planes are principal planes ,i. e. , 1=v; 3= h. For these tests a) Find the peak (failure) friction angle and the axial strain at failure; b) Estimate critical state (large strain) friction angle; c) Draw effective ant total stress paths; d) Compute the shear and normal stresses in the failure plain at failure for dense sand (c=0.69) e) Compute dilatancy rate (dv/da) at the peak friction angle; f) Compute the final void ratio, e, for three tests.

7. A series of three triaxial tests were performed on samples of a saturated sandy clay soil consolidated under a cell pressure of 200 kPa, which was held constant during axial loading. The shear strength parameters were found to be, c=0 kPa, peak=240 a) In an undrained test the pore pressure at failure was 125 kPa, find the ultimate deviator stress, b) In another undrained test the maximum deviator stress was 160 kPa. Determine the ultimate pore pressure. c) In an drained test the back pressure was kept constant at 80 kPa. Find the ultimate deviator stress. 8. Consider an undrained, uniaxial (unconfined) test on an elastic, isotropic, saturated soil specimen, as shown below.

Making use of the relations given above, establish a relationship between the drained and undrained Young moduli, E/E, in terms of A, and . Using A=1/3, for an elastic soil, determine this ratio.
