Leading a dynamic industry

Utilising the vast experience of our course leaders.

Course Director Prof Graham M Winch PhD MCIOB Following a career as a project manager for London-based roofing contractors, Graham went to Warwick Business School where he researched operations management in construction and manufacturing. His PhD based on the research in manufacturing was published as Managing Production: Engineering Change and Stability (Oxford, 1994). Moving to the Bartlett School at University College London in 1990, Graham spent the next decade teaching the management of construction firms and projects at MSc level, an experience which is distilled in Managing Construction Projects: An Information Processing Approach (Blackwell, 2002). His research covered a wide variety of areas including the management of professional practice, the organisation of the European construction industry, the governance of inter-firm relations in construction, and the comparative performance of the UK construction industry. Taking up the chair of Construction Project Management at the Manchester Centre for Civil and Construction Engineering, UMIST, in 2001 where he headed the Project Management Division, Grahams research turned towards project risk management. The opportunity of the merger of UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester to form the University of Manchester prompted Graham to move to Manchester Business School to enable a much stronger connection to be made between teaching and research in construction management and in mainstream business and management. The inspiration for the MBA for Construction Executives lies in the benefits of strengthening this connection, and a similar belief underpins the Centre for Research in the Management of Projects at MBS which Graham now directs.

Module Director Working Collaboratively Dr Nuno Gil PhD A Corporate Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, UK, Nuno has several years of professional practice in Portugal and the United States. This includes working for the leading structural design consultant in Portugal, Segades Tavares & Associados (STA), during which he participated in projects conceptualised by the award-winning architect Alvaro Siza Vieira. Subsequently, he project managed the construction of a tidal swimming pool and the retrofitting of a sea promenade wall. He has also worked as a strategic planning consultant for the Portuguese Government and for planning and development projects funded by the EU. In the US Nunos experience includes projects to design, build, and tool 2Billion semiconductor fabrication facilities. Following a degree in Civil Engineering, Nuno earned a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and specialised certificates in the Management of Technology and in Logistics from the University of California at Berkeley, US. He joined the Operations, Technology, and Innovation Management division of Manchester Business School in September 2004 after spending two years in the Manchester Centre for Civil and Construction Engineering. Nuno has delivered training on project planning and scheduling techniques to the Project Management Professional Development Programme (aka Rolls Royce Programme) and on lean construction to the British North-West Development Agency. Nunos research focuses on developing contributions to project management theory and practice and his interests are primarily in the domain of large engineering projects, including the delivery of high-tech production facilities such as semiconductor fabrication facilities, high-rises, and airport terminal infrastructures. His work primarily involves computerbased simulation and qualitative research methods and he also investigates ways to enhance the effectiveness of webbased project management tools.

Programme structure
The modular programme structure can be adjusted to suit professional workloads and outside commitments; it is portable relocation does not lead to loss of studies or tuition fees.

The programme comprises three key elements: course modules residential workshops project stage Course Modules Modules direct you through the subject matter, setting out aims and providing check points where you assess your progress and understanding. Set assignments provide feedback, open book examinations test your understanding of the concepts studied and their application. For each module you receive a full module study pack including study guides, textbooks, required readings, assignment questions and sample past examination papers all provided within the set tuition fee. The Module Stage comprises 12 modules which are normally completed in five semesters over a period of 30 months, although it is possible to take up to five years to complete. Semesters run from January to June and July to December. Students usually take two and a half modules per semester. Examinations are normally held in the students country of residence in late November and early June. Both challenging and rewarding, the MBA programme is purpose-designed for effective study management. While each module has a specific timetable, the number of modules taken in any semester may be adjusted should professional or personal circumstances require it. Brief details of both core and construction specific modules can be found on pages 18-19. Each of the modules comprises 4 units for the core and 3 units for the Construction specific ones. One is delivered through a three-day residential workshop. Residential workshops Workshops are a central feature of the MBA that really set it apart. Each workshop runs over three days. You usually attend two sessions each semester held at Manchester Business School Worldwides UK or Overseas Centres. These sessions allow the group and faculty

to put theory into practice, addressing management issues through face-to-face contact and the exchange of ideas. Formal presentations by participants also enhance the experience. Many of our distance learning graduates have said that the workshops are a key factor in personal and career development. To ensure you gain the maximum benefit, the number of delegates at each workshop is purposely kept low, normally between 15 and 25. Working within these relatively small groups, you can learn through collaboration while being allowed to express your ideas fully and develop your individual thinking. What benefits do the workshops offer?

experience to bear on one specific issue. The project, of around 10,000 words allows you to develop your own topic on an aspect of the business that is both interesting to you, relevant to your work and of real use to your organisation. This is a further opportunity to develop a management approach to a work-related topic and demonstrate individual responsibility. Industrial Group Project Working in groups of four, you will put the skills you have learned to practical use in a business environment. The project addresses a significant business issue such as a new product launch, major capital expenditure programme or development of a business strategy, preferably in one of the participants organisations. The Project is preceded by an intensive planning workshop to develop the necessary data collection, planning and group working techniques to deliver a successful report and project outcome. An experienced academic supervises each group. Certificate/Diploma For students who, for a variety of reasons, might choose not to complete their MBA, there are two points of exit built into the programme structure: the Certificate of Business Administration (three modules) and the Diploma of Business Administration (eight modules). Assessment Assessment is through continuous assessment and examination to the same exacting standards as the on-campus MBA. The continuous assessment, carrying a 50% weighting in the final module mark, comprises written assignments at set points during the module. The examination part of the assessment takes place at the end of each semester. The result for the examination contributes 50% to the module mark.

They enable emphasis on interactive problem solving, providing the ideal environment for rapid progress. You learn the value of teamwork and hone in on your analytical skills. They enable exchange of ideas with similarly motivated individuals, leading to creative and lively sessions. Workshops are characterised by a strong emphasis on the use of experience in learning. They provide you with a sense of belonging to the University community which develops with your fellow students and faculty.

Project Stage The final element of the course is the completion of a project to address a workrelated management issue. The Project Stage normally takes six to 12 months and provides an opportunity for you to focus on any management issue of particular interest and relevance both personally and to your organisation. One-to-one supervision is provided. Students will be required to complete a personal project, as well as an Industrial Group Project. Personal Project The project enables you to bring all you have learned in your coursework studies and your

Core Modules Business Information Systems The module focuses on the central role of information systems in creating and supporting the processes of a business, both internally and externally. Topics covered include e-business, decision support and enterprise resource planning. An overview of current information technology components and trends is complemented by discussion and analysis of contemporary business developments such as global electronic marketplaces and virtual organisations. The focus of the module is on changes in management and the critical role of information and communications technology (ICT) in modern enterprises. No prior knowledge of information technology is assumed. Financial Management This is a challenging subject but one which offers the aspiring senior manager key skills in running a technologically based enterprise: how to measure the performance of a business; how to evaluate the impact of business decisions at all levels; and how to utilise the firms financial markets to best effect. Alongside these skills, this module provides you with a deep understanding of the financial side of the enterprise as we explore the three key factors that govern business success: liquidity, profitability and the management of risk.

Managerial Economics This module considers managerial theories of the firm, production and costs, market structures, strategic pricing and competition policy. The latter topic is reserved for the workshop which emphasises the importance of an economic understanding of how modern firms behave in the real world. The objective of the course is to expose you to a challenging perspective on evaluating modern firms and management in areas as diverse as pricing strategies and rival behaviour in inter-dependent markets. The approach adopted offers a precise and definitive treatment of the many concepts in business or managerial economics, supported by the use of real world case studies. Marketing Strategy The module introduces the basic concepts of marketing and illustrates their application in organisations, with specific reference to financial service organisations. As an introduction, the module emphasises the relevance and use of marketing concepts rather than trying to develop technical marketing expertise. The component units of the module describe the basic tasks of marketing: understanding markets and customers; creating customer values; communicating values; and delivering values to customers. The module also aims to show the relevance of these tasks to the organisation and to the work of all functions within the organisation.

Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management Students are provided with an overview of human resource management and organisational behaviour their scope and context; which helps the students to understand their organisations and, at the same time, enhances their ability to manage work and responsibilities rather than merely react to changes and agendas developed by other people in their, and other, organisations. An understanding of typical recruitment and selection procedures and the issues involved in their formulation and implementation in organisations today is developed. This module also provides students with the knowledge and opportunity to examine some of the complex issues involved in reward and compensation . In conclusion, the module aims to provide students with an overview of some crucial issues in managing a workforce: change management, training and International Human Resource Management. At the same time there is a clear recognition of cultural differences between societies and, whilst applying primarily Western models and theories of organisational behaviour, students are encouraged to recognise their limitations in other societies. Risk Management The aim of the course is to develop an effective approach to risk management. The approach will be based on a Construction approach to risk management enhanced by use of concepts and ideas from social sciences. The course will cover both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

Strategic Management The module is designed to give you a clear understanding of the planning development and implementation which constitute strategy and strategic management. Strategy is concerned with developing plans to secure favourable positions and competitive advantage at corporate, business and functional levels. The pre-requisites for effective strategy formulation are an in-depth understanding of the external environment, competition and self-diagnosis. Strategy formulation cannot be separated from execution. A strategy that cannot be implemented is worthless. Strategic management is concerned with the overall strategic process that integrates formulation and its successful implementation, evaluation and control. Supply Chain Management A supply chain is a network of organisations that supply and transform materials and distribute final products to customers. Supply chain management is concerned with the effective management of the complex range of business activities associated with co-ordination of resources and effective delivery of value to customers. This is becoming increasingly important as competitive pressures and developments in information technology make supply chains more efficient.

Construction Specific Modules Creating the Built Environment This module will address the contribution constructed facilities make to the successful management of business in the public and private sectors. The buildings that house business processes play a significant and poorly understood role in shaping those processes, and infrastructure plays a critical role in any successful economy. At the same time, the benefits offered by constructing facilities have broader social and environmental implications for the various stakeholders affected by them in the creation of the built environment. In addressing these issues, the module will explore how innovation in both the constructed product and the construction process enables the creation of the built environment. Procuring Assets and Services The perspective of this module is from the demand side and will explore how clients can effectively articulate their requirements for new facilities and then manage the process of facility definition and delivery successfully. For course members from the client-side, the module will provide learning in the effective management of acquisition projects; for course members from the supply-side it will improve understanding of how to create greater value for their clients.

Managing the Construction Firm This module is the complement to Procuring Assets and Services in its focus on the supply side. The principal aim of this module is to explore and apply the learning from the core modules to firms working on the supply side in construction, be they specialists, contractors, or consultants; and be they incorporated or constituted as partnerships. For course-members working on the supply side, it will address all the issues around creating sustained competitive advantage; for those on the client-side, it will facilitate understanding of how the supply-side operates and how its effectiveness can be improved through appropriate and timely decisions. Working Collaboratively The first three modules explore the construction process, and the demand-side and supply-side separately. This module brings them all together to focus on the dynamics of working collaboratively to create the built environment.
