Having a new baby can be a wonderful and exhilarating experience, but it can also be a daunting and overwhelming time for expectant and new parents. If you are stationed away from family and friends who usually give you support and advice, it can be even more overwhelming. The FFSCs New Parent Support Home Visitation Program (NPSHVP) can provide the help and support you need through great classes, information and referral, community resources and private home visits by a professional who can help you with questions and concerns you may have as an expectant or new parent. The NPSHVP strengthens the military family by empowering new and expectant parents to meet the challenges of parenthood and military life. To learn more, please contact the FFSC New Parent Support Specialist at 678-7569/2559.
FUN
Walk around historic areas such as the French Quarter, Magazine Street, the Garden District, or Old Algiers Point. Hike, bike, or take a canoe in local parks and swamps. Take a day trip to the beaches of Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida. See the animals, undersea life, and bugs at the Audubon Zoo, Aquarium, and Insectarium. Play backyard games like croquet, badminton, or Frisbee. Or, make up games with your kids. Teach them the outdoor games of your childhood. Have a campout in your backyard. Plant a vegetable or flower garden. Spend the day at City Park and be sure to ride the historic carousel. Take your children to a place that your family used to visit when you were growing up. On base: bowl, swim, and watch for announcements of special MWR activities all summer long. Also remember, its not family time if everyone is engaged with portable gaming devices, MP3 players, or DVD players. However, even these technologies can be made into a shared experience for the family: watch a DVD together, create a family playlist for the MP3 player, or have a video game competition. The important thing is to do something fun together.
On your mark. Get set. Go! Have Some Summer Family Fun!!
