Persephoni Moore Maria Flores Responding to Literature in the Form of Friendly Letters (3rd Grade)

Domain 2: Classroom Environment -Rules: 1. Be respectful 2. Raise your hand and wait to be called on 3. Bring required materials to class everyday 4. Always be on your best behavior -Routines: 1. Greet students at the door in the morning 2. Put homework in the homework basket 3. Hang backpacks on the back of chairs 4. Begin working on morning assignment 5. Call attendance and take lunch count -Procedures: 1. After morning work students will transition to the writing lesson. 2. Students will need to take out writing journals/notebooks/loose leaf paper, a pen or two pencils, and any other material the teacher may request or hand out and have students place them on their desks. 3. Students will sharpen any pencils or grab extra materials before we begin our writing lesson. Standards: 6.3.4-Write responses to literary text 6.3.7- Write friendly letters following an established format Objective: Students will be able to respond to literary text in the form of a friendly letter. Materials: Journals/Loose Leaf paper, pencils or a pen, envelopes Mini-Lesson: 1. Read Arthurs Tooth by Marc Brown. 2. Discuss with students how Arthurs friends were teasing him in the book. 3. Ask students how it would make them feel if they were Arthur and they were being teased by their friends. Write down their thoughts. 4. Explain to students that they will be writing a letter in response to the text that was read. It can be addressed to one of the characters, the author, or someone they think will be interested in the book.

5. Model and practice with students how to write a friendly letter with a heading, greeting, body, conclusion and a complimentary closing. 6. Model and practice with students how to address an envelope so they can send their letters. (Using pseudo addresses and a homemade mailbox.) 7. Keep these visuals up in the classroom during writing for students to have a resource to look back to. Status of the Class: 1.Students will move their names on the board to their writing status. 2. Those students who are finished with their writing will choose an assignment from the Assignment Menu on the board.

Writing and Conferencing: 1. After students move to their status in writing, students will begin to write their friendly letters and address their envelopes. 2. As students are writing their letters, the teacher will be writing their own letter on the overhead projector. 3. After the teacher writes their letter, they will conference individually with students on their status and give any addition feedback or answer any questions students may have. Assessment: 1. Students will use a self-assessment template, made by the teacher, on writing a friendly letter and another on addressing an envelope. 2. Students will be assessed on the parts of a friendly letter and properly addressing an envelope. Sharing: Students will share their work to the class by mailing it (to the homemade mailbox) and choose a letter to read to the class.
