The result is an isolative layer that can as well work as a wall. Hence; the result can make a wall with no additions added. As of experimenting it, the material could stand a compression of holding 5 laptops easily. As the weight was gradually increased until it struggled to take a weight of an 80 kgs human body. As for the tension, it as well struggled to take the weight of an 80 kgs human.

Section: scale 1:2 Applications

As for the possibility of applying the material, in the future, it would be able to use such a strong material as a wall and as insolation. The material would have the advantage of it being easy to produce and assemble on site other than it being lighter than Reinforced Concrete and Loam construction walls (which are commonly used)

Properties - assumed
In the further developed material, as an assumption, it would be able to take a high tension and compression of a weight over 150 kgs. That is due to the addition of a double of the amount added in the experimental model (step 2).

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

it has the strength to hold compretion of 55kg. yet there must be a way that we could inhance its capability even more.

Improvements in next Step

in terms of its cooling properties we have to do a third experiment to find a way to improve clays breathing capability. on the other hand, we have to find stroger material that could be mixed with clay and result in high possibility of it taking compression and tention.

it has the strength to hold tention 20 kg but it has Much more stronger fibers are needed to less strength in compression in comperison with the strengthen its flexibility. process of step number two.

Topic Area Lightweight material Description Materials used (recipe)
clay gravel palm fibre

This experiment was a result of the earlier experiments of clay and its proparties. earlier i was able Pictures, Diagramms & Section (scale 1:2) to identify the capabilities of clay in terms of taking compresion and tention. as well as its main proparty which is the cooling aspect of it. this test was mostly an experiment of puting all this properties together an try to inhance its strength as a material and as a cooling system. the function of this experiment is for clay to work as a thermal insulator that would bring cool area into a building with out the need of using any electrical energy. it is self sufficiant in terms of saving the humidity in the form of water -and that is with the help of it form and structure- then the water gets collected in the middle openings where the sponge inhances the property of collecting the water. by that the air gets the opportunity to pass through these openings and with the help of the collected water, the air gets cooled up into the space indoor.

Properties - tested
three properties were tested in this experimant: 1- its capability of taking compretion with the help of gravel. 2- its ability to take tention with the help of the plam fibers. 3-possibility of it allowing cool air to pass through with out the need of electrical energy to be used.

Properties - assumed
apart of its cooling ability, i believe that clay can highly take is tention and compretion ,but with the help of addition material that needs to be experimented with. .

Applications
this experiment can be applied in thermal insulation. But i highly recommend its use as walling with the help of materials that can inhances its tention or compretion properties.

EXPERIMENT DOCUMENTATION 1
Topic Area Translucent material (Step 1) Description
The material created is made out of a mixter of clay and water in which tiny holes were pocked into it and the plastic optical fibers were placed in. There were two experiments conducted in the first step using the same mixture. One of the mixtures was left to dry naturally and the other was put in the oven and baked. The baked clay was more effective as it dried faster than the natural. At first it was out in the oven and then taken out when half dried to put in the plastic fibers. Then after putting in the plastic fibers it was once again out in the oven to dry it more. After a while it was taken out of the oven and left to dry off naturally and became very rigid.

EXPERIMENT DOCUMENTATION 2

Clay Water Plastic optical fibers (strings)

Topic Area Translcent material (Step 2) Description

In the third experiment the same mixture of clay and water was used.

Materials used (recipe)

Clay Water Heated sugar with water

Pictures, Diagramms & Section

Pictures, Diagramms & Section After preparing the mixture, the clay was placed inside a contrainer and put in the oven for a while until half dried. Then it was taken out and a toothpick was used to pock holes into it in which heated sugar would be poured. After the clay mixture was nearly dried, sugar and hot water were heated to produce syrup to pour it into the holes.
After the sugar dried in the holes it turned back to crystalline sugar which did not give the same affect as the plastic fibers, the translucency.

Properties
Clay: -Plasticity, shrinkage under firing and air drying, hardness, cohesion, capacity of surface to take decoration Plastic fibers:-Absorb heat and only melt in very high temp. Outcome material: light-conducting because of the plastic fibers and durable because of the clay.

Properties
Outocme material: -Light-conducting because of the addition of the sugar -Organic because of the usage of clay -Durable

Plastic Fibers Clay

Sugar Clay

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

-The material was successful in having the lightconducting property; translucent. -Once dried the material became very hard. -If the material is heated the plastic fibers absorb the heat and trap it. -Made out of organic material (clay)
Fouz Al Busaidi (2009-0019)

Improvements in next Step

The plastic fibers do not act as insulators. Therefore, finding a more suitable material that would have the same effect as the platic fibers (translucent) would be the next step such as, glass.

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

-The sugar used did not create the translucent effect. -The sugar just dried out and became crystalline sugar again.

Improvements in next Step

One of the main improvements is not to use the sugar to create the light-conducting translucent effect in the material as the first experiment showed to be more effective.

Fouz Al Busaidi (2009-0019)

EXPERIMENT DOCUMENTATION 3
Topic Area Translucent material (Step 3) Description
The third experiment is a mixture of clay, water and cement tto try to make a more rigid and strong material. After mixing the three components together is was placed in the oven and left to dry. After a while it was taken out of the oven when dired but had a lot of cracks.

Clay Water Plastic optical fibers (fishing thread)

Pictures, Diagramms & Section

While experimenting, the following steps were made: 1- Mix the clay with water, both dry and wet clay to Pictures, Diagramms & Section (scale 1:2) get an even mixture. 2- Place the mixture in a pyrex which is covered by aluminium foil. 3- Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees and place the clay filled pyrex in the oven. 4- Leave it in the oven for a while until half dried and then take it out and put in the plastic optical fibers. 5- Place the clay filled pyrex in the oven again for it to dry. 6- Then after a while take out the pyrex of clay and leave it to dry fully naturally, which will take a day or two. 7- Then test if the clay is translucent.

Properties
The aim was to make it a stronger and durable material by the addition of the cement to the clay mixture.

Properties - tested
-Heat conducting - Plastic optical fibers -Light-conducting - Plastic optical fibers -Plasticity - Clay before fully dried

Clay

Plastic Fibers

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

-Adding the cement to the mixture of the clay made it very weak and could not handle heat so it cracked. -The addition of the cement to the clay weakened the clay mixture. -The clay and cement particles do not go together. -The clay alone is much stronger.
Fouz Al Busaidi (2009-0019)

Improvements in next Step

Going back to having the mixture of clay is much stronger and so going back to that stage is better. As a next step it would better to use the most effective outcomes of all the experiments conducted which is using the clay and plastic optical fibers. Resulting is a more translucent material that is mostly organic.

Properties - assumed
-Light-conducting (translucent clay)

Applications
Can be used as: -A building facade. -Room or area dividers. -Shade. -A building material

The strength of the material was that its light strong but the weakness in it was that there is nothing to and bind the materials together

What I wanted to improve in the second test is to add something that hold the block together so that it can hold more in a high level of compression

The strength of this material is that its lighter than normal clay brick and its strong and can handle high level of compression. But the weaknesses of this material is that it takes time to dry and also it cant handle a high level of tension.

the next and final step is to make a full hallo block so that we can see if it work.

EXPERIMENT DOCUMENTATION 2
Topic Area Lightweight material Materials used (recipe)
Sugar Paper strips

Materials used (recipe)

Paper strips (rolled ) 297 x 6

Description
Aim: To create a lightweight material with paper tubes. In the last step, I discovered that paper tubes were Pictures, Diagramms & Section strong and could resist stong vertical forces as they have a high strength-weight ratio and decided to work further with this property. Paper tubes were rolled up into tiny tube of height 6mm. The paper tubes can be placed together to form a honey comb structure. Honey comb structure is stable and light weight.

Description

Description

Aim : create an light-weight wall that would be able to take in lateral forces. 100 grams of fine dried clay and 1200 cm3 of water was mixed to create a clay paste. Then dried mesh of vegetable fibres were added to the paste. The two were mixed throughly. Clay is able to absorb humidity from the air, which increases human comfort level. This property of clay has made it a popular choice in the region. However clay alone cannot withstand tension forces and hence easily breaks. The vegetable fibres were used to increase the ability of the material to take in tension forces, while still remaining light weight.

Aim : create an alternate for steel tubes. Fine sugar crystals was heated at atmospheric pressure till it formed a thick syrup. Paper strips were placed in the syrup and left to dry. Paper tubes can withstand large vertical forces, but it absorbs water rapidly. The syrup is a phase changing material. Therefore it would be able to absorb heat from the surroundings to change its physical state (ie. solid to liquid). Hence combining the two would perhaps create a replacement for the steel tubes used in construction today.

Properties
The honeycomb structure is made of cells close to each other, which distributes the forces with out creating damage to the structure. The combs are hollow, which makes them light.

Honey comb structure

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

The advantages of this material is that it is biodegradable and renewable. It can be re-used. However, it cannot withstand large forces yet.

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

Once the syrup had dried, it turned out to be very brittle and cracked easily.

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

Paper tubes can withstand strong vertical force and would form a strong honey comb structure. However, paper absorbs water quickly and the tubes become weak.

Improvements in next Step

This material would work as a core in a sandwich structure. The next step would be to consider the composition of the upper and lower skin of the sandwich

EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS LIBRARY

Topic Area Lightweight material Description
Gypsum is a matrix material. It can withstand compression forces. The structure is weak and large slabs on gypsum would be required for the material to withstand strong forces. The jute fibres have a uniform mesh which allows it to transfer larger forces across its fibres than a non uniform mesh. It is therefore able to carry higher tension. Combining the two materials would produce a new stronger material. These would form the plates of the sandwich material, while the core would be composed of paper tubes. The pictures illustrate Step 1 - create the concrete plates, with the jute the process. fibre ( shown right) embedded. After arranging the paper tubes, the two gypsum plates were attached using a paste of flour and corn flour mixed with water. This paste would act as a binding agent.

Sand + gypsum

Step 3- Apply the binding agent and close it with the other plate.

Sandwich composition

Properties - tested
The material can withstand masses upto 30kg.

Applications
The application of this new material would be in the fields of construction. The material could be used as shear walls. It could be used for building shelves, furnitures. Step 2 - Arrangement of the honeycomb tubes

Notes
Another alternate for the binding agent was a mixture of sand and gypsum with water. The composition made a tough binding agent, but dried up very quickly, which made it tough to use. A different way of dealing with Gypsum in a light weight manner, would be to create gypsum foam from used gypsum. Gypsum is widely used in Oman for interior decoration. Being able to re-cycle the material would be very useful and reduce the waste of the city.

Properties - assumed
The material would allow heat transfer through the gypsum layer and the paper tubes.

Paper has narrow capillaries that allow water to be absorbed from one end and travel to to the next. Wax is a hydrophobic material, therefore it keeps water away from its surface. When we put wax on paper the surface area reduced to heat is reduced and water does not evoporate Wax Wax

Properties
Paper is Hydrophillic. Wax is Hydrophobic. Clay cover allows wax to not be scraped of or melt. Clay absorbs humididty and keeps the surface cool. All three materials provide insulation. -

mixing Gypsum with random palm fibers produced the stronger and more insulating block. The added layer of wax allows a exposed surface to be protected agasint moisture.

Palm Fibers

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

The problems in the process of making this block is the quick hardening of the wax as it drops into the Gypsum mix. This does not allow for a uniform shape of wax droplets to be used and also an uneven distribution. Ricky Vinayachandran 2008-0006

Improvements in next Step

The wax droplets should be fabricated before hand using water. Then place the wax droplets within a mold and pour the Gypsum mix over it, allowing it to seep into the spaces. This will ensure a block with evenly distributed wax droplets. -

Properties - assumed
It can be assumed that with the increase in folded random fibers, the block would be much stronger in the tension and compression aspects. This also should decreases the heat transfer from surface to surface since there are more thin fibers than the second test. Ricky Vinayachandran 2008-0006

Applications
This material can be used on walls or facades to allow better insulation. The temperature can be maintained within a building by applying this material on a surface. It is less expensive and uses organic material as well. -

Lightweight material_Gypsum & palm fiber Description

Experimenting with Gypsum -composite of calcium sulfate dihydrate- concluded that it is a strong but brittle material that can hand a certain amount of pressure when it is applied on its surface, however, Pictures, Diagramms & Section in order to develop this material, a composite material of gypsum and other fibrous materials such as Palm fibers must be introduced. Gypsum is a crystal-water soluble (at 25C) material, its found in nature, mostly in rocks in the form of white veins. Palm fibers, easily extractable material that is found in its original state in a grid structure, as a building material, the fibrous gird can serve as a part of a composite that take in and distributes tension forces. The proposed material is a composite of two layers of gypsum covering a sandwich of palm fibers, plastic pieces; palm fibers, all laid together holding a thickness of 1 cm. The plastic pieces at as an insulation that traps and store heat.

Similar to the previous experiment, I have been experimenting with Gypsum -composite of calcium sulfate dihydrate- concluded that it is a strong but Pictures, Diagramms & Section (scale 1:2) brittle material that can hand a certain amount of pressure when it is applied on its surface, however, in order to develop this material, a composite material of gypsum and other fibrous materials such as Palm fibers must be introduced. However, in this composite the I have increased and layered the palm fibers in order to achieve a high ability to withstand tension forces. All together it has a thickness of 1.2cm

Properties
The new thin composite material has the properties similar to the reinforced concrete. The material takes in both tension through the palm fibers, and compression through the gypsum layers. When tested it takes 2 minutes for the temperature to increase from below 25C to 38.2C under blue flame is applied to it for one side. In addition, the 1 cm thick composite can hand heavy weight up to its breaking point (15 kg).

Properties - tested
The new material does not heat up as fast as the pervious material, with an open blue flame fire applied in one side, for over 3 minutes it did not transfer any of the heat.
1.5mm 3mm

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

The new proposed material has an advantage of a thin and strong material, which can provide shade, and some cooling effect. However, the plastic inside it traps the heat and act as a conductor; as a result its application in an arid and dry climate is of a great disadvantage.

Improvements in next Step

In order to develop this product, increasing the ratio between the palm fiber and gypsum is necessary, and removing the plastic pieces from the composite is important in order for it to fit the surrounding climate. In addition experimenting with layering the fibers should be taken into consideration.

Properties - assumed
Assuming the strength properties of the new material means that it can withstand double the weight it handled previously, therefore it can with stand over 30 kg.

Applications
This material can be used as partition that divides house which would result in a larger space that can be considered as living space. In addition as the product is very light it can be used in shading structures or in furniture design.

Temperature control material (Step 1) _TCMS1 Description

Temperature control material (Step 2) _TCMS2 Description

TCMS1 is a mixture of natural clay, sand, and vegetable and palm fibers consisting of injection wax in between. The idea behind this material was to maintain the surrounding temperature in a way Pictures, Diagramms & Section keeping the comfort zone around it. Simply, the material absorbs heat when rises up the comfort level and releases it again when the temperature goes below the comfort level. Such a material can be used as cladding or bricks for a wall to exist creating an environment that reduces the use of air conditioning as it manages the temperature once reached at a certain degree, to keep the relaxing room temperature. TCMS1 is almost 8 x 8 x 3 (cm) containing 5 layers of natural materials mixed and overplayed on top of each other. The first and the last layer consist of clay mixed with sand, vegetable fibers and water, oven heated at around 120C for 20 mins. The second and the second last layer is a mesh of palm fibers, and the centre layer is the injection wax. Once the layers were compacted, TCMS1 was baked at 180C.

TCMS2 is a combination of clay and gypsum. The material is designed as such, that it could absorb humidity from one side of the surface and keep the other side cool. The gypsum layer of TCMS2 has Pictures, Diagramms & Section hols for the clay to be filled so that the clay is not blocked by gypsum and could take in and out the moisture. The material equals to almost 1sm thick. The gypsum was poured in a mould and the hols were made during its drying up process. Once the gypsum was fully dried, a mixture of clay and fiber was added to the cast filling the holes. After air dried, TCMS2 was kept in a preheated oven to fully dry up.

Properties
When TCMS1 is heated from one side at around 80C, the heat on the other side of the surface is about 35C. In this case, the material might be efficient to use when the thickness is changed to more than 3cm. Clay Mixture

Properties
TCMS2 can absorb heat during high temperature. But when the heat is being released during low temperature, the side with the gypsum layer keeps the environment surrounding it cool. Heat released from clay = 3 x heat released from gypsum Clay Mixture Clay Mixture Wax Mixture Clay in Fibers Wax in Fibers Gypsum

Clay Mixture Wax in Fibers

Wax in Fibers TCMS1 can take in heat and store it inside the wax, absorbing access heat hitting the surface, and then Gypsum releasing it when the surrounding temperature is cooled down. Regarding the strength of the material, vegetable fibers couldnt take in the tension applied, to the point that it could hold the clay when even cracked.

Gypsum

The fibers mixed with the clay will be change to palm fibers keeping it strong enough to hold the material all together when applied pressure, and adding a material that could keep one part of the surface cooled when the heat is being released (for indoor surface)

Gypsum TCMS2 can take in a big amount of heat absorbing it just like in TCMS1, but keeping the other side of the material cool with gypsum application. The weakness of this material is not having the right measurements. The layer of clay could have been thicker.
Rumana Ishaq Muhamed Al Othmani, 2007-0012

To analyse the material more in deep, it is necessary to make a thicker block using same methods and materials. The next step will be combining TCMS1 and TSMS2, to experience the reaction of wax and how it helps controlling heat absorbed and released.

Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

Improvements in next Step

Properties - assumed
Taking massive weight and keeping the materials cool as possible.

Applications
Can be used for insulation with minimum loads.

It was much stronger than the last test in More Fiber and no Sugar Compression and Tension. It was able to hold up 15 kg of weight but the fibers used were too little as they floated up while it was drying. Nevertheless, the fibers actually kept the material at the bottom binded.
