The Chara-Dasa-group

The Chara-Dasa-group According to my understanding of Jaimini, the Trikona-Dasa, DrigDasa, the Padakrama-Dasas and Chara-Dasa all belong to what I call the Chara-Dasa-group, since they are all calculated following more or less the same method regarding the span of years and the subperiods of each Rashi following to the normal rules of Chara-Dasa. It is only the order of the dasas that is different in case of each of these dasa-systems. (Always observe if the first dasa-period in these different Dasasystems is direct or reverse according to the usual Chara-Dasa rules) This is how I understand the dasas of the Chara-Dasa-group: 1) Trikona-dasa starts from the strongest out of the "trikonas" (1st, 5th or 9th) the order of the dasa being 1st, 5th, 9th - 2nd, 6th, 10th - 3rd, 7th, 11th etc. etc. 2) Drig-Dasa starts from the 9th house and is following the same pattern as Trikona-dasa by running 9th, 1st, 5th - 10th, 2nd, 6th 11th, 3rd and 7th etc. etc. 3) The Padakrama-Dasas runs like normal Chara-dasa in case of Cardinal signs, in Fixed signs it starts from the 6th sign from Ascendant and jumps from the 6th to the 6th from the 6th etc., following this patters: 6th, 11th, 4th, 9th, 2nd, 7th etc. etc. In the COMMON sign it follow the same pattern as Trikona Dasa, only that it always starts from the Ascendant. 4) Chara-Dasa runs forewards or backwards from the Ascendant depending upon the 9th house is in odd or even quadrants. The number of years of each sign is calculated from the position of its lord.

The Brahma-Dasa-group. Then there is a different group of Jaimini-dasas, which I like to call the Brahma-Dasa-group. The Sthira-Dasa, Navamsa-dasa, Brahma-Dasa and Yogardha-Dasa all belong to this group, since they can be relatively easily calculated once the Brahma-planet has been correctly identified in the horoscope. (All these Dasas are running direct in case of odd signs and backwards in case of even signs)

The Chara-Dasa-group

1) Sthira-Dasa starts from the RASHI occupied by Brahma and runs for 7, 8 or 9 years for each sign in case of Cardinal, fixed and Common signs. 2) Navamsa-Dasa starts from the NAVAMSA occupied by Brahma and each sign runs for only one year. 3) Brahma-Dasa starts from the Rasi occupied by Brahma if the Ascendant is in an odd sign, in even signs it starts from the 7th from Brahma. The number of years is calculated in the same way as with Chara Dasa, except that for Brahma-Dasa we have to calculate the years from the 6th house from the Rashi under consideration, and not from the Rashi itself. 4) Yogardha-Dasa starts from the Ascendant or the 7th house whichever is stronger. The period of each Dasa will be half the sum of its Chara-Dasa and Sthira-Dasa periods.

The Shoola-Dasa-group Niryana-Shoola-Dasa, Niryana-Phala-Shoola-Dasa, Mandooka-ShoolaDasa and Shoola-Dasa are the dasas belonging to what I call the Shoola-Dasa-group. Each dasa in these four Dasa-systems gets 9 years. There are however certain differences between these four dasa-systems, which I like to explain. (In case of all the four types of dasas the counting is direct in case of odd sign and backwards in case of even signs) 1) Niryana-Shoola-Dasa is usually counted from the Ascendant in case of odd and from the 7th house in case of even signs. Each dasa runs for 9 years. This dasa can in my opinion be used profitably for all sorts of predictions. It is very useful since it can be calculated very fast and easy mentally. 2) Niryana-Phala-Shoola-Dasa is designed for one purpose only, which is predicting death. It runs from the maraka-places (Rudraplanets) for the person or relative in question to the places significating the person or the relative and each sign gets 9 years. This really works, but this kind of predictions should in my opinion not be given. 3) Shoola Dasa runs from the different houses and from the CharaKarakas and Sthira-Karakas. Each sign gets a period of 9 years. Some kind of general predictions (both positive and negative) can be given regarding the relatives and subjects signified by the different houses and Karakas depending on the presence of malefics and benefics in in the different signs in their respective dasaperiods.

4) Mandooka-Shoola-Dasa runs from the Ascendant in case of odd signs and from the 7th house in case of even signs. Mandooka means frog, and it jumps from kendra to kendra in the pattern of: 1st4th-7th-10th, 2nd-5th-8th-11th, 3rd-6th-9th-12th. Mr. K. N. Rao has given another method of calculating MandookaDasa, which is more like the Chara-Dasa-method. The Shoola-Dasamethod of calculating Mandooka-Dasa is from the book Jaimini Sutras by the late B. Suryanarain Rao. Obviously, the calculating of some of the Jaimini-Dasas can be done in more than one way.

Dasa-Applicability When I was reading the book on Mandooka-Dasa by Mr. K. N. Rao, I became aware that he is having a very strong case by saying that certain conditions or planetary patterns have got to be fulfilled with many of the Jaimini-dasas. In Mandooka-dasa the dasa-periods are jumping like a frog from kendra to kendra. Therefore Mandooka-Dasa is very much based on KENDRAS, and there happens to be FOUR corners in the kendras. Perhaps this is why the condition that FOUR planets (not Rahu & Ketu) must occupy kendras in order to justify the use of this dasa. This made me think very carefully about the applicability of some of the other dasas. Could it be that the conditions under which we should use the different dasa-systems are hidden within the definition of the dasa-systems themselves in the Jaimini Sutras? I have got some ideas that I have verified on few horoscopes only, so obviously this is subject to further research before any conclusion can be made. Anyway, here are some of my ideas: a) Trikona-Dasa jumps from trine to trine, and this has made me think that perhaps there should be THREE planets in TRIKONAS (1-59) from Lagna to justify the use of this Dasa. (This is the case in my own chart, where Trikona-Dasa seems to apply very well.) b) The Drig-Dasa follows the same pattern as Trikona-dasa except that it starts from the 9th house. Could Drig-Dasa perhaps be related to DRIG-BALA? Drig-bala is a special kind of strength in Jamini where a rashi becomes strong by being aspected by its own lord, Mercury or Jupiter. Could the condition of Drig-Dasa be that the 9th house should be subject to powerful Drig-Bala? c) Brahma-Dasa has made me wonder if the condition in this case could be that the Brahma-planet should be in the 1st or 7th house?

The Chara-Dasa-group

I am not sure about these ideas, but I will certainly keep an open eye when experimenting on these dasas. It must be subject to further research.

A note on Yogardha-Dasa Somebody may be wondering why I have placed Yogardha-Dasa in the Brahma-Dasa-group, since this dasa-system does not seem to be dependent upon the Brahma-planet at all, but rather upon CharaDasa. This looks like a logical error of mine, and therefore it certainly needs further explanation. As the very name Yogardha-Dasa is suggesting, this dasa-system is based on the "combination" (yoga) of Chara-Dasa and Sthira Dasa. Please see the earlier definition: Yogardha-Dasa starts from the Ascendant or the 7th house whichever is stronger. The period of each Dasa will be half the sum of its Chara-Dasa and Sthira-Dasa periods. It was while contemplating on this definition I thought that perhaps the conditions under which we should use this dasa-system are hidden within the definition of the calculation itself, like we have seen before with other dasas. Could be conditions of Yogardha-Dasa be somehow connected to the combination (yoga) made by combining the starting-points of both Chara-Dasa and Sthira-Dasa? Well, according to the definition of the Padakrama-Dasas, there is a certain affinity between the Chararashis (cardinal signs) and Chara-Dasa. This also seems to be indicated by the very name Chara-Dasa. In the same way the very name Sthira-dasa also seem to have some kind of connection to the Sthira-rashis (fixed signs). Could it be that Yogardha-Dasa should only be applied when the Ascendant is in a CHARA-RASHI (Cardinal sign) and at the same time Brahma is in a STHIRA-RASHI (Fixed sign)?
