This latest offering from Steven
Spielberg starts with an English
farm boy named Albert (Jeremy
Irvine) being tasked with raising
and training a colt racing stallion
called Joey. When the two are
separated by World War I, the
horse braves an odyssey through
ravaged Europe, making an
impact in the lives of humans
wherever he goes.
The bulk of the story stays
with the horse. While the majes-
tic creature makes its way
through the horrors of war,
everything has that classic-
movie sheen to it. While were
supposed to feel for the horse, it
seems like the mountains of
human suffering are being
glossed over.
We Bought a Zoo (PG)
Sometimes, you just have to
take a big, crazy leap and give it
your all. That seems to be the
syrupy message at the heart of
this based-on-a-true story.
Benjamin (Matt Damon) is a let-
go newspaper reporter who
recently lost his wife. While
looking for a new home where
he can take his young daughter
and teen son, he finds a run-
down country estate that also
happens to be a run-down zoo in

The payroll tax reduction has
been extended under the Middle
Class Tax Relief and Job
Creation Act of 2012. Two per-
cent of your deduction for
Social Security (4.2 percent,
down from 6.2 percent) has
been picked up by the govern-
ment again, and that amount
will stay in your paycheck. If
youre self-employed, your por-
tion of self-employment tax
drops from 12.4 percent to 10.4
percent.
Workers who earn $50,000
would have seen $1,000 in their
paychecks over the year the
reduction has been in place.
Divided by 24 (assuming twice-
monthly pay periods) and that
would have come to around $40
per paycheck. If your annual
pay is $30,000, your savings
from the reduction is $50 per
month.
Oddly enough, a poll by the
National Foundation for Credit
Counseling showed that 66 per-
cent of workers didnt know
their paychecks were larger,
even though the extra amount
had been in paychecks for a
year.
The poll shows what the rest
of polled workers did with that
money:
Saved most of it: 3 percent
Caught up on past-due bills:
8 percent
Increased retirement contri-
butions: 4 percent
Bought something special: 1
percent
Paid off debt: 18 percent
First, be aware of the addi-
tional amount in your paycheck.
If the reduction isnt further
extended next year, that amount
could vanish from your income.
Second, determine what gets
you the most return for that
money. If you put the money in
savings, youll likely earn less
than one percent interest.

North African-Style Fish with
Couscous
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 red onions, sliced into thin
rings
2 tablespoons raisins
3 tablespoons salted, roasted
cashew nuts
1 red bell pepper, seeded and
sliced into thick rings
1 yellow bell pepper, seeded
and sliced into thick rings
1 green bell pepper, seeded and
sliced into thick rings
4 fresh, firm, ripe tomatoes,
blanched, peeled, seeded and
sliced into thick rounds
1-1/2 cups fish or vegetable
stock, mixed with 3/4 cup
water
1-1/2 pounds catfish, tilapia,
cod, or salmon fillets, cut into
1-1/4 inch cubes
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon fresh parsley,
chopped
Couscous
2 cups quick-cooking couscous
2 cups vegetable stock or water,
boiling
2 teaspoons whipped butter
1/4 cup diced carrots
1/4 cup pine nuts
1/4 cup dried currants
2 green onions, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
1. Heat half the oil in a large,
heavy skillet, and saute half the
onions on medium to high heat
for 6 to 8 minutes, or until very
dark golden, stirring constantly.
Using a slotted spoon, remove
fried onions from the oil, place
on paper towels and set aside.
Fry raisins in the same hot oil
until they plump. Remove and
add to fried onions. Fry the
cashews for about one minute.
Remove and add to raisin-and-
onion mix.
2. Add the remaining oil to
the skillet and fry remaining half
of onions until golden. Add bell
peppers and continue cooking
for about 10 minutes, or until
peppers are soft. Add the toma-
toes and stock, partially cover
and cook for about 10 minutes
on medium to low heat.
3. Stir fish through the onion
and pepper mixture. Taste and
season with salt, pepper and
cayenne pepper. Continue sim-
mering for 10 minutes, or until
the fish is tender. Stir periodical-
ly to prevent sticking.
4. To make the couscous,
place the couscous grains in a
large, deep dish with a lid. Pour
in the boiling stock and stir in
butter, carrots, scallions, pine
nuts, dried currants and salt.
Cover and set aside to keep
warm for about 15 minutes so
the couscous can absorb liquid
and swell up. Fluff couscous by
raking through it with a fork.
5. Carefully pour the fish
mixture over the couscous and
gently fold it through to mix
thoroughly. Sprinkle with onion
rings, raisins, cashew nuts and
parsley. Serve immediately.

The American Kennel Club
recently released its registra-
tion statistics for 2011, which
revealed that among registered
pets, the Labrador retriever
was the most popular breed in
the United States. In fact, the
Labrador retriever has held
that top spot for 21 years.

jump around: Bulldogs ranked
No. 19 a decade ago, but today
sit at No. 6.

Q: We have a 12x8 plot
that has been used to grow
tomatoes. Each year, our crop
has seriously dwindled. Is
there something we can do?

A: The decline of a crop in
the garden is often due to
growing the same crop in the
same soil for several years.
This may result in the buildup
of plant diseases, or to the
depletion of nutrients that the
crop needs.
Fungal and some bacterial
diseases may express them-
selves as foliar symptoms.
Fungal diseases are more com-
mon in New Mexico and result
in necrotic (dead) spots in the
leaves, or yellowing, browning
then dying of the leaves. You
may also notice a constriction
and discoloration of the stem
near the soil line. There may
be vascular diseases that block
movement of nutrients and
water in the plant stems. This
is made evident by wilting and
dying back of the leaves. If the
plant is infected late in the sea-
son, the result may be decline
of the plant and poor yield.
The longer a crop is grown on
the same soil, the more the dis-
ease organism accumulates
and the earlier the plant is
affected. Eventually, there
may be no harvest.
Each crop has certain nutri-
ents that it needs in greater
quantities than other crops.
This depletes the soil of the
specific nutrient needed. The
longer a crop is grown on the
same soil, the greater the
depletion of the nutrient and
the poorer the plant growth
and yield.
In both cases disease
accumulation and nutrient
depletion crop rotation
reduces the problem. When
rotating crops, choose a crop
that has different nutrient
requirements and diseases than
the preceding crop. Tomatoes
and fruit-producing crops need
higher levels of phosphorous.
Root crops need more potassi-
um. Closely related crops, like
tomatoes and chiles, can har-
bor the same diseases, so they
are not good rotational crops.
In a small garden, crop rota-
tion is difficult, but still impor-
tant. You can replace depleted
nutrients, but accumulation of
disease will still occur.

Luft, hired George Cukor to
direct her in A Star Is Born.
In l932, Cukor directed What
Price Hollywood? which starred
Constance Bennett as a waitress
who falls for a washed-up movie
director. In l937, the non-musical,
black and white A Star Is Born
was made with Janet Gaynor
and Fredric March, which
Cukor refused to direct because of
its similarity to What Price
Hollywood? But the chance to
direct a Technicolor musical with
Judy Garland proved irresistible.

In the l976 remake, Barbra
Streisand wanted Elvis Presley

Is it a small tree or a large
shrub? You may be surprised
to find out that there is no clear
definition of the main groups
of landscape plants.
Thats right. A shrub that
only gets 18 tall can be either
a groundcover or a shrub.
Verbena in south Texas is a
perennial, and in Albuquerque
its an annual. The same con-
fusion is also true of trees. A
lilac can grow to 8 or taller
and most of us would call it a
large shrub. But a Crape
Myrtle that gets the same
height is most often consid-
ered to be a tree.
I consider a plant a tree if it
can have the lower foliage
removed and a canopy devel-
oped to give the plant that
bonsai look. This can be
accomplished with proper
pruning techniques not
shearing the top off the plant.

set and a box of cleaning sup-

A: Guardian cookware
was manufactured in Los
Angeles from the mid-1930s
until the plant was destroyed
by fire in about 1956. The
product was sold mostly at
house parties, much like Avon
is marketed today. The pieces
were constructed of hammered
aluminum with glass tops. The
durability was one of the main
selling points. Since glass lids
got broken and lost, they are
especially coveted by collec-
tors. Typical prices found on
the Internet include a turkey
roaster, $75; 1-quart casserole,
$18; and 2.5-quart Dutch
oven, $22.

books from the 1970s, most

This is Why You Shouldnt Paint Your Stucco!
By the law of physics, the only way to enhance/strengthen stucco is to fortify when mixing. Once cured the stucco is as strong
as it can get.
Painting traditional cement color coat(s) will eventually trap moisture. All stucco systems, regardless of finish coating will crack. A
residential stucco system typically has a concrete base over a block or framed structure. The stucco system endures constant structural and
ground movement, which causes cracking. No finish coating, concrete or elastomeric can completely endure this movement. Elastomeric
products are designed to allow elasticity, least likely to crack. However, if the wall faults past its elasticity, it will tear, allowing moisture
behind it. Also, elastomeric is moisture resistant. Not Water Proof! Therefore, with a heavy concentration of moisture, it will penetrate the
paint/coating. Elastomeric was originally designed for application over a new base coat.
Traditional cement color coats are designed to absorb moisture through its layer(s) to the base coats. Hence the need to evaporate quickly.
When paint/elastomeric are applied directly over cement color coat(s) and moisture gets behind it (which inevitably will happen), this causes
the moisture to be trapped between the paint/elastomeric and the base coat. During freeze and thaw cycles the underlying cement color
coat(s) and original base coats freeze, causing delamination. This compromises the entire existing stucco system! Once compromised, the
only sure remedy is to relath with a new base coat to eliminate the risk of the paint/elastomeric. A relath with a new base is typically
double the cost of a regular restucco! Call me for a comprehensive estimate. My focus is to preserve your existing stucco system.

The facts about furniture
According to Emmy Award-
winning home design expert,
author and TV/radio personality
Christopher Lowell, upholstered
furniture coverings are being
driven more by texture and less
by prints. Yesterdays bulky, sta-
tionary pit sofa will be replaced
by lower backs and seats along
with smaller footprint pieces
clustered into conversation
groups for more flexibility and
ease of interaction. Stacy Garcia

sees a movement of woods from
very dark mahogany and espres-
so to lighter and mid-toned
woods, with raw, natural walnut,
cherry and white oak being

Women, this years textures
and fabrics will include irides-
cent metallic woven within fab-
ric; strong patterns and bold
prints; modern floral; tailored
woven fabrics like tweed, her-
ringbone, plaid and hound-
stooth; velvet/velour, sumptu-
ous dupioni silk, and faux fur.
Natural fibers such as bamboo,
jute, eucalyptus, cotton, silk,

A splash of color
Deborah Wecselman of
DWD Inc. suggests starting with
neutral hues of taupe, beige,
cream, grey, black and white,

Rain, snow and ultraviolet
rays can wreak havoc on a wood
deck. If left unchecked, deck
boards will begin to fade, cup,
warp and crack. Mold and
mildew growth is also a com-
mon problem on frequently wet
deck surfaces. Consequently, its
important to regularly weather-
proof a wood deck to keep it
looking beautiful and ensure its
structural integrity.
To restore and weatherproof a
deck, you first need to clean the
surface. A pressure washer with
a commercial deck-cleaning
solution works best but great
care needs to be taken when
using the washer. Hold the noz-
zle approximately 18 inches
away from the deck surface, and
always keep it moving to ensure
that you do not damage the
decking boards. Also, make sure
to clean the deck railings.
Power-washing a deck does
not always restore it to its origi-
nal color. Sometimes the boards
can still look a little dark. To
lighten them up, apply a com-
mercial deck wash and brighten-
ing solution to the surface using
a sprayer or long-handle stiff
brush. This type of solution typ-
ically includes bleach of some
percentage that will help lighten
the wood and give it a more
even color tone.
If youre weatherproofing on
a sunny day, first hose down the
deck with water before applying
the wash and brightening solu-
tion. After spraying on the solu-
tion, use a long-handle stiff
brush to scrub the deck and
remove any residual stains.
Then allow the solution to soak
into the boards for 15 to 20 min-
utes. Afterward, rinse off the
deck with a hose.
Once the deck has been
cleaned and had time to thor-
oughly dry, you can then begin
to weatherproof it in earnest by
applying a water sealer. A deck
waterproof sealer is specially
formulated to repel moisture and
protect the wood deck boards
from ultraviolet sunlight. Deck
waterproof sealers are available
in both clear and tinted shades.
Before applying a waterproof
sealer, make sure you check the
weather forecast first. Typically,
a deck sealer needs 24 to 48
hours of rain-free weather to dry
thoroughly.
There are a number of ways
you can apply a sealer to weath-
erproof a wood deck surface. I
use a roller and a 4-inch-wide
brush, as it is the most econom-
ical way to apply it. Initially, I

roll the deck sealer onto a small
section of the deck, and then use
the brush to work the sealer into
the wood.
I find this method works best,
as the deck sealer really gets
pushed into the wood grain.
Alternatively, you can use a
long-handle paint pad or buy or
rent a sprayer to initially apply
the sealer. As with the roller,
work in small sections at a time
when applying the sealer with
either of these two alternative
tools. Also, youll still need to
work the sealer into the wood
with a brush after initially apply-
ing it.
To apply a sealer to the deck
railings, a sprayer works the
fastest but you waste a lot of
sealer. The most cost-effective
way to weatherproof wood deck
railings is to apply the sealer
with a brush. Unfortunately, it is
a slow process. The water sealer
will hold up best with this
approach, however, and youll
save money because youll need
fewer cans of water sealer.

New Mexico water is too hard
to remain untreated. Although
you may leave your water untreat-
ed and get by, it will cost you far
more to live with the damage and
inefficiencies than to treat it with

I have the benefit of hindsight
in my own home, says Larry. I
spent about $1,000 on a GMX

space properly, and if youre
shopping for stock furniture,
youll always get something
thats mass-produced. But many
stores carry furniture that can be
bought ready-made and die-cut
in prescribed sizes and designs.
Custom-made furniture is
unique and crafted to your spec-
ifications, however exacting.
Sometimes the need or desire
for custom pieces is practical;
maybe the area needs a specific
size or a match is needed for
another existing piece.

glass panels may be used as
accents. Custom designers will
also find ways to use specialty
woods; merge woods and tex-
tures; use carvings; and combine
wood and metal sculptures. If
you can dream it, a designer can
make it happen.
Salguero also explains that
custom pieces are more afford-
able than you would think.

mid- to high-end retail stores.
Plus, you can get something
locally made and handcrafted to
your exact specifications.
Kitchen cabinetry is another
area where custom pieces often
come in handy. Stock cabinets,
doors and shelves will fit stand
sizes. Custom-manufactured
cabinets are made to the buyers
specific needs and dimensions.
This may be a perfect solution to
fit a corner or to accommodate
different sized appliances than
the original. Custom cabinets
also offer more options in terms
of shelving, accessibility and
storage spaces.
Unless youre purchasing a
stock piece from a floor display,
the time between ordering and
delivery is often no different,
even if you order a custom
piece. Since retailers often order
from the manufacturer, it may
take weeks until the customer
has the furniture in place in his
home. According to Salguero,

Turning your patio into luxu-
ry outdoor living space is easier
than you think. With some seri-
ous planning, new and afford-
able all-season materials, equip-
ment, furnishings and acces-
sories, you can convert that tired
concrete slab into an attractive
getaway, just steps out the back
door!
Its not a job for amateurs,
experts say, if you want to do
more than spruce up what you
have with some flowerpots or a
new chaise lounge. A real
makeover such as adding an
outdoor kitchen, new stone
flooring, an outdoor fireplace
and/or other upscale amenities
requires forethought and
detailed plans.
In addition to underground
utilities, rethinking seating
needs and/or redoing landscap-
ing, homeowners wanting to
upgrade outdoor living space
need to consider future expan-
sion or existing structures such
as a pool. Nothing is worse
than finding out a few years
after you spend thousands of
dollars on your patio that you
didnt leave enough room to
expand for additional seating, or
that part of the patio has to be
removed to install a pool or hot
tub because of site constraints.
Plan for future site amenities
even if you dont plan to build
them for some time, advises
architect Christopher Colby.
Typically, the construction
of these projects is not for the
weekend warrior. Items such as
gas piping for grills or fire pits
require the expertise of a
plumber. Lighting and electrical
outlets would require the expert-
ise of an electrician. Depending
on the code requirements,
inspections for such items may
be required by a licensed con-
tractor as well, he points out.
Some local municipalities also
may require site plans and/or
drawings.
While there is a lot of infor-
mation and do-it-yourself TV
shows out there to assist the
average homeowner with
designing outdoor space, there
are also a lot of pitfalls if you
choose to do it all on your own.
Contact an interior designer or
landscape architect, because it is
too easy and too costly to make
huge mistakes simply because
you didnt know better. In the
end, youll be happy you con-
sulted a team of skilled profes-
sionals.

natural materials, such as stone,

believes. Man-made materials
like brick and concrete work

out.
In climates prone to harsh
weather, homeowners should
remove and store away furni-
ture, cushions and any other
decorative items. The best way
to approach what materials to
use is to remember that they will
be exposed to the weather

Whenever I tell people I am
an interior designer, invariably
they say, I know what I like,
but I am completely confused
about how to pull it all togeth-
er, or, Oh, one day when I can
afford to hire a designer, I will
call you. Creating a room that
feels designed isnt rocket sci-
ence. Its actually quite simple. I
am going to share with you my
1-2-3 rule for the basic design
of any room.
No. 1: Select a beautiful
color for the walls. Everyone
down deep inside knows what
colors he generally prefers. Take
inspiration from anywhere and
everything. It can come from the
color of a favorite shirt, your car
or the color of the sky at a par-
ticular time. My suggestion is
this: Whatever that color is,
select a pale, light version of it.
For example, if the color you
love is orange, consider using a
soft peach or light apricot color
for the walls. This will introduce
the color palette of your prefer-
ence into the room without over-
whelming it. Of course, any
woodwork or millwork in the
room can be painted in another
color. My favorite color for mill-
work is a soft white that is not
too stark or bright. As with most
things in life, the novelty of
painting a room in a color that is
too vibrant will wear away, and
youll be left with the desire to
repaint the room.
No. 2: Stick to two main
upholstery fabrics. The colors
and prints should be comple-
mentary. One fabric can be a
solid, whereas the other fabric
might take on a print, such as a
floral, plaid, animal spots or
stripes. If you like a simpler and
more tailored room, use the
solid on the principal upholstery
items, such as the sofa or a pair
of club chairs. The other printed
fabric can be used on smaller
chairs or benches. If you prefer a
bolder look, do the opposite; use
the printed fabric on the larger

No. 3: Bring in up to three
other colors/prints/motifs to
the room. This is your opportu-
nity to personalize and jazz up
the style of a room. Select other
colors e.g., a stronger version
of the wall color that will
enhance and underline that orig-
inal color you loved. These
additional colors can be intro-
duced in pillows, rugs and
accessories. You also can spike
interest in a room by selecting a
motif that you repeat over and
over in different ways, colors
and sizes.
Following this simple 1-2-3
rule should take the mystery out
of designing a room. Creating a
successful room doesnt neces-
sarily mean that every item in
the room has to match. As a mat-
ter of fact, there is something to
be learned from slightly mis-
matched or quirky pairings. This
is what gives a room personali-
ty. Be confident, and select what
you really love. Your room will
shine with your personality and
style.
Bringing a spaces design together doesnt have to be difficult. Simply choose a wall color that
makes you happy, in subtle hues, and pair with a zing of color on accents.

Spring is a great time to
clean the outside of your
homes windows, if you dont
do them more frequently.
First, inspect all your
homes windows to make sure
theyre undamaged, including
screens. Next, remove screens
and place them on a clean,
sunny spot.
Take a look at the homes
windows from the inside.
Newer double-hung windows
can be unhooked and either
lifted out of the frame or
swung inward to access the
outside of the glass. Older
windows are sometimes held
in the frame by a thin strip of
wood, which should be care-
fully removed. Then the bot-
tom sash can be lifted out of
the frame. Being able to swing
out or remove the bottom sash
makes cleaning the outside of
upstairs windows easier and
much safer than climbing a
ladder to reach them.
To clean windows, brush
away loose dust and debris
first. Then fill a bucket with
warm water and mild deter-
gent. Place a waterproof liner
(like a tarp) underneath the
window to protect the floor
and walls. Dunk a clean
sponge in the soapy water and
wash the windowpanes,
repeating as necessary to
remove built-up dirt. Once the
window is clean, grab a lint-
free cloth, a chamois or some
newspaper. Dry the glass com-
pletely; for your final pass,
wipe back and forth, then
straight up and down, to mini-
mize streaks.
I usually start cleaning the
outside of windows first. It
gets the hard work out of the
way first. I can clean the
sponge and refill the bucket for
the inside of the windows.
Finally, clean the screens
that were set aside, brushing
away cobwebs and loose dirt
before using soap and water.
Close up all of the windows
and reset the screens.

make them feel right at home

become a growing trend for
family and friends to stay in the
homes of those they visit, rather

Treat your windows.
Insulation is your first task, to
remove drafts and keep the
room warmer or cooler, depend-
ing on the season. Clean all
parts of the windows, and add a
modern curtain rod with decora-
tive finials, as well as fresh, new
shades and curtains. Add the
pretty touches of coordinated
curtain tie-backs that hook onto
hardware easily installed next to
the window frame, behind the
curtains.
Make a comfy bed. Guests
want to sleep on a newer, sup-
portive bed, so test yours out.
Then choose stylish bed linens
that coordinate with the rooms
and curtains colors. Soto says,
In the guest bedroom, be sure
to use bedding that is machine
washable for easier preparation
and cleanup before and after
your guests visit. Add plenty of
supportive sleeping pillows and
decorative throw pillows in
coordinating pillowcases.
Set out a linens and toi-
letry basket. In a large basket,
provide freshly laundered,
fluffy rolled towels and wash-
cloths, along with a selection of
aromatherapy body lotions and
other pampering products for
guests enjoyment as they make
themselves at home.
Clear the air. Guests appre-
ciate having clean, allergen-free
air to breathe, so place a small,
portable air purifier in the room
a few days before their arrival.
Be sure the filter is cleaned and
the machine works silently. An
air purifier is far preferable to
scented candles, potpourri or
room sprays, which can bother
some guests allergies or sensi-
tivities.
Provide a nightlight. They
cost less than $5 at home decor
stores, and the slight glow of
light in their room, or in the con-
nected bathroom, allows your
guests to get up and move
around safely in the middle of
the night if they must.

Youre not stuck with fake turf
or sisal rugs; todays home
decor stores offer outside car-
pets in decorative patterns and
colors. Jones suggests carpets
made of 100 percent poly-
acrylic yarns, 100 percent
polypropylene or olefin, to
name a few. These carpets are
easily hosed off for cleaning.

an inviting area for socializing with friends and family.

Provide pillows. Setting
fluffy pillows and cushions on
your chairs and sofas instantly
adds comfort and coziness to the
space. Shop your home decor
store and catalogs for pretty pil-
low designs in outdoor-friendly
materials that also resist mold
growth. Choose a small, lum-
bar-support, outdoor pillow for
rocking chairs as well. Pet own-
ers might also set out a dog bed
made of outdoor-material, so
that Fido can hang out on the
porch in comfort.
Light it up. In outdoor liv-
ing decor catalogs, youll find
outdoor lamps that look very
much like tabletop indoor
lamps, only theyre safe to use
outdoors and are often battery-
powered. Place one on an end
table to glow alongside citronel-
la candles in safe decanters
placed around your space.
Go green. Adding green
and flowering plants to your
porch sitting area is one of the
easiest decor tasks possible. You
can place large or groups of tall
containers on the porch floor,
lineup potted plants on a bakers
rack or outdoor shelving unit, or
hang flowering planters from
your porch roof. If your railing
is wide and secure enough, you
might install window boxes to
fill with spring and summer
flowers and greenery to sur-
round your new socializing or
relaxation haven. If you want to
avoid attracting bees, use green
plants in a range of colors,
instead of flowers.
Hang curtains. Install a
curtain rod, or use powerful
springform curtain rods, to hang
colorful or neutral-shaded cur-
tains. This will provide some
privacy and add extra visual
interest to your porch space.
Jones reminds you to be sure
that the curtain material, thread
and hardware, are made for the
outdoors. Cotton fabric and
thread will rot when out in the
elements. Lighter fabrics can
dance in the breeze, and you can
even switch out to new patterns

are even more critical. Realtor
Fritz Pfister shares suggestions
for low- and no-cost home
improvements that will help
your house sell.
Make a good first impression.
Clean sells, says Pfister, who
specializes in residential listings.
Really clean sells even better.
And dont forget to keep the
home as clean every day as the
day you went on the market.
This includes the yards, porch,
entryway and every part of the
interior. Hire a cleaning team if
necessary to be sure the home is
spotless for every visitor.
Make your homes mainte-
nance look effortless. Put away
all yard tools. Clear out clutter
from the garage and basement.
Walk through the house. If
something causes you to stop
and ask yourself, Should I
change this? I would, says
Pfister. If you pause, so will
prospective buyers.
Make closets feel spacious
and organized. Closet redesign
is relatively inexpensive should
you have older or inefficient
shelving and hanging systems.
In todays society, you dont
need more than three feet for
long hanging clothing. Double
racking maximizes space.
Also, Pfister continues, you
must be able to see 75 percent of
all closet floors. If you havent
worn something in six weeks,
youre not going to wear it in the
next six weeks, so pack it, sell it

or some other nondescript color.
Anything that reflects a strong
theme should be removed. Plain
colors allow prospective buyers
to imagine their own colors and

Edward Tandy, handyman,
often sees houses that need more
than a little sprucing up. He rec-
ommends tidying up unruly
shrubbery, fixing front door-
knobs that dont work, fixing
chips and freshening front door
paint, replacing dark and dull
hardware, straightening crooked
shutters, fixing loose bathroom
tiles, and more.
As you walk through the
house, says Tandy, anything
thats not cosmetically appeal-
ing or anything that might cause
the potential buyer to be
alarmed needs to be addressed
even really small things, such
as a light switch that doesnt
work properly. Some buyers
will think, Oh, man, this place
has wiring problems, turn
around and walk out.
When it comes to paint col-
ors, Tandy agrees with Pfister.
No wild, crazy contemporary
colors or any decorating style
that is out of the mainstream.
Many of these suggestions
can be done by the homeown-
ers, but some, especially custom
repairs, call for the help of a
handyman. In that case, look for
someone with broad experience,
references, liability insurance,
and a professional and trustwor-
thy appearance. Ask yourself,
Can this person be trusted in
my home, maybe even with a
key? Make sure you are com-
fortable with this person, and be
sure to get a written estimate.
Finally, says Pfister, Be
proactive and have your home
inspected by a professional
home inspector. Any item that is
reported to be a safety issue or
defect repair prior to placing the
home on the market. When you
are proactive, you eliminate sur-
prises and control the person
who performs the work and the
cost to make repairs.

A privacy fence is often one
of the key components in creat-
ing an outdoor living space.
Privacy fences are ideal for
patios and decks that enable
homeowners to decompress
from the hustle and bustle of a
hard days work. There are a
number of off-the-shelf privacy
fence design options to choose
from, including wooden and
vinyl fences. In addition, ever-
green shrubs can serve as priva-
cy fencing; however, they may
need a few years of growth to be
effective if you buy them small.
The height for an off-the-
shelf vinyl or wooden privacy
fence is typically about six feet.
However, you can sometimes
customize them a bit to extend
them higher. In addition, you
can come up with your own
design to achieve your own par-
ticular style and height. Often,
homeowners who come up with
their own design use a combina-

tion of solid material along the
lower two-thirds of the fence
and lattice on the upper third.
When building a wooden pri-
vacy fence, use material that
will not rot or decay over time.
In addition, regardless of the
wood type, the wood should be
sealed in some way to prevent
moisture penetration. If you
elect to paint the fence, make
sure to paint all sides of the lum-
ber, including freshly cut ends.
Another major concern when
building a privacy fence is wind.
A large vertically standing solid
surface is easily susceptible to
wind damage. Consequently,
make sure to install the posts at
least a couple of feet down into
the ground, and preferably set
them in concrete. In addition, by
using lattice or coming up with a
privacy fence design that
includes adjacent/staggered ver-
tical lumber pieces that are at
angles to each other, wind can
flow more easily through the
privacy fence and reduce the
risk of it being blown over.
The use of evergreen shrubs
is also a great way to create a
privacy fence, particularly if you
are building a fence around a
patio or deck. Though evergreen
shrubs can be expensive, using
them in a small area limits the
damage to the wallet.
Whatever your plans and pri-
vacy fence design ideas are, you
should first check with your
local building code enforcement
officer to see whether there are
any restrictions on installing a
fence, even a small privacy
fence. Evergreen shrubs are typ-
ically exempt from local ordi-
nances and covenants for fence
construction.
Privacy fences can be constructed from wood, vinyl and
even evergreen shrubs. Be sure to check city and neighbor-
hood ordinances before building this type of fence.

would have solved their prob-
lems, for it was the territorial
arsenal as well as the distribu-
tion point for most forts in the
southwest.
Fort Union seemed easy
pickings. Contrary to what is
shown in the movies, forts in
the West were not built for
defense. They were more like
compact settlements in a bar-
ren wilderness, maintained to
house and organize men and
supplies for offensive opera-
tions. Fort Union had another
weakness it was in the
shadow of a neighboring mesa
top, making it vulnerable to
shelling from above.
The Union leadership was
aware of these weaknesses.
They responded to the threat
by building a new fort some
distance away from the mesa.
It was built in a classic star
formation, which gives
defenders opportunities for
crossfire when attacked from
any direction. Also, its low and
sloping earthen walls were
designed specifically for
defending against artillery.
It was never tested in battle.
The Confederates lost the rest
of their supplies at Glorieta
Pass. With all their food and
ammunition gone, the Texans
reluctantly decided to head
home.
A third Fort Union was
then started. It was to serve as
a major supply depot for 30
years. As forts go it was a love-
ly place, with its Officers Row
an avenue of cozy houses
with porches and picket
fences. It is the ruins of these
buildings that remain today.
The outline of the star fort is
also visible.
And in the distance to the
west, nestled below a dark
mesa, lies the grounds of that
first fort.

or shade will look in their home.
Measurements are taken at that
time as well. The third and final
step is back at the design center,

Its not surprising with
our aging population that
more and more people are
trying hearing aids. And
theyre finding that they
actually work!
Unfortunately, the
prices of hearing aids keep
going up, and it seems
every day there is some
new thing that will make
your hearing perfect.
Luckily, many insurance

Both Presbyterian and
Lovelace senior plans offer
some support, but they
insist that you go to their dis-
penser of choice which
happens to be the most
expensive outfit and while

is worth that kind of money.

writes There are differ-
ences between hearing aid
brands, but they are not sig-
nificant enough to say which
is the better. It would take
quite a few bells and whis-
tles to make me pay that
kind of money for a hearing
aid. Reasonable prices
might be in the range of
$600 to $900 for an analog
device, and up to $1,500 for
a digital one. Additional
options can be added
depending on user prefer-
ence. Starkey has a new
device out that you can do
some limited programming
yourself on at home from
your telephone.
Hearing aids are big
business. Large corpora-
tions are buying and build-
ing new stores on a regular
basis. I think for the most
part, they are mostly profes-
sional. But, someone has to
pay for those $8,000 to
$11,000 newspaper ads. I
get three mailers each week
at my house from big hear-
ing aid companies. They fly
a closer into town whose
job it is to get you to buy
today.
Heres what you need
to know. For the most part,
hearing aid dispensaries are
like pharmacies. We all sell
the same pills, but charge
different prices. Shop
around. Dont let a sales-
man pressure you. And
remember to do your part as
an educated consumer.
Good hearing is not a
spectator sport. A big part of
hearing success is that the
patient understands the
process and follows

Dear Esther,
A Reverse Mortgage is a loan for senior
homeowners (age 62 and above) that uses a
portion of the homes equity as collateral. The
loan generally does not have to be repaid until
the last surviving homeowner permanently
moves out of the property or passes away. At that
time, the estate has approximately six months to
repay the balance of the reverse mortgage or sell
the home to pay off the balance. All the
remaining equity is inherited by the estate. The
estate is not personally liable if the home sells for less than the
balance of the reverse mortgage. The federal government has
established a few basic requirements that everyone must meet in
order to be eligible for a Reverse Mortgage:
You (and your spouse) must be at least 62 years old
Your home must have enough equity to consolidate all
existing mortgages
The type of home must be FHA-approved, such as a single-
family home
A senior can also utilize a Reverse Mortgage for the purchase of
a home. It will require a larger downpayment, but they will never
have to make monthly payments on this mortgage as long as they
live in that home. This program works best when a senior decides to
downsize and uses their proceeds from the sale of the current home
as the downpayment for the reverse mortgage home purchase.
