Week Two: Main goal for this week: Talk about tragedy and pride/parallel situation/Whatcha Gunna do/video

tape students acting out a scene: play their recorded scene with the two films and compare Monday Description of activities Complete reading of Act One, Scene Two; Read first half of scene with teacher leading as narrator and different students assigned different roles; next half students divide into groups, each student taking on a role. Tuesday Students will be creating line poems based upon the character of Asagai as he is an integral character in the play and brings up specific issues the characters, especially Beneatha, face Wednesday Read act two scenes one and two of the play using shared reading technique. For both acts, have teacher read aloud and stop to verbally annotate making inferences, asking questions...allow students to do shoutouts during the reading so they can participate in the shared reading process. Thursday Finish reading Act two scenes one and two if we did not finish the day before. Once finished, split the class into groups of 4 and assign each group either scene one or scene two from the day before. Students will perform amd record their given scene for the class using the props and clothes that we will provide for the class. Friday Finish activity from Thursday: watch each videotaped version of the groups scenes and then watch the corresponding scenes from the two films (both the 1961 version and the 2008 version) and have a discussion talking about the similarities or differences in all the versions of those scenes, and why those various choices may have been made. After this discussion, read aloud act two scene three through shared reading Students will be comparing the various scenes through the discussion and they will be defending their own choices while also being critical of their own group as well as the other groups and the film. They will also follow along and participate in shared reading for the remainder of the class period.

What students will be doing

Students will be either following along in the reading of Act One, Scene Two or reading a specific assigned part.

Students will be following a specific structure to create line poems that further flesh out Asagai: Line One: Title the poem Pride Line Two: Give literal description of character, etc.

Students will be reading along with the teacher and be giving shoutouts throughout the reading where they will be participating in the critical reading process and learning from the modeling that we will be doing as teachers

Each student will take on a role and perform the scene, they will be making decisions where they will have to think not only the content of the words and play, but also stage direction, directorial choices, and performing using a camera.

What/how youll teach

Teacher will be using different reading strategies of both readers theater in a large class setting and in small group settings in order to model how the scenes dialogue would actually sound when performed.

Teacher will model the structure of the poem and show students how to compose it by creating an example poem

We will be modeling how to actively and critically read in order to gain comprehension of the meaning of a text by reading aloud in the shared-reading process. We will model how to ask questions, make predictions, find answers to previous predictions and questions, make inferences and much more Students will continue to learn how to actively read and participate in the reading process. They will learn what they should look for while reading and this will be proven through the shout-outs throughout the lesson.

We will walk around while the students prepare their performance and make sure they are thinking of all the various elements that go into a performance. I will remind them of wardrobe, ask them how they think their assigned character would say a specific line. Etc.

We will lead the discussion about comparing the scenes and noting the various aspects of the scenes like character choice, how the characters interact, the wardrobe, how the various emotions or themes of the scene are portrayed or displayed...however, we hope that this discussion will ultimately be student-driven and that we will not have to focus the discussion too much In the discussion, students will demonstrate their knowledge of noticing differences in the play and how they chose to present the material. They will learn that scenes can be interpreted in many different ways.

What will be learned (and how will you know?)

Using readers theatre, students will become more familiar with drama style writing, including the narrators italicized stage directions/notes. Furthermore, students will be witnessing the characters become more complex.

The major components of Asagais character will be revealed, as well as the issues he brings up in the other characters

Students will learn how to In critically read and a text by demonst working with the play and translating their reading into a theatrical performance. Students will learn what types of choices are necessary for a director, playwright, or author to make in their work.
