How to simplify Rational Numbers

How to simplify Rational Numbers

To solve rational numbers, we know that all arithmetical operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can take place in rational numbers. All operations used for simplification of rational numbers are similar to the methods of simplification of fraction numbers. Addition of rational Numbers: Let us add two rational numbers 5/6 + 2/3, We first find the LCM of denominators 6 and 3 =6. Now, to change the denominator of 2/3 to 6 , we multiply numerator & denominator by 2, so we get: =5/6 + (2*2)/(3*2) =5/6 +4/6 = (5+4)/6 =9/6 Ans. Now let us add another pair or rational numbers where one number is negative & another is positive. (-3/4) and (4/7) = (-3/4) + (4/7) L.C.M. of denominators 4 & 7 is 28. Now to make the denominator of both rational numbers 28, we multiply numerator and denominator of first number by 7 and second by 4.

We get = (-3*7)/(4*7) + (4*4)/(7*4) = -21/28 + (16/28) = (-21+16)/28 =-5/28 Ans. Subtraction of Rational Numbers: When we have to subtract one rational number from another, we will follow the same pattern. Let us take an example: To Subtract (6/5) from (3/8), we write = (3/8) (6/5) L.C.M. of 8 & 5 are 40, so to make the denominator 40, we proceed as follows: = (3*5)/(8*5) (6*8)/(5*8), = (15/40) (48/40), = (15-48) /40, = (-33/40). Let us take another example: Subtract (-4/5) from (-3/7), = (-3/7) (- 4/5), L.C.M. of 7 & 5 is 35, On making denominators of both rational numbers same we get: = (-3*5)/ (7*5) (-4*7)/(5*7) = (-15/35) + (28/35) = (-15+28) /35 = 13/ 35. In another example we take both positive rational numbers. Subtract (2/5) from (2/3), = 2/3 -2/5, L.C.M. of 3 & 5 =15, =(2*5) / (3*5) (2*3)/(5*3), =10/15 6/15, =(10-6) /15, =4/15. Procedure for multiplication and division are different. Multiply 3/7 by (-5/4), We multiply numerator with numerator & Denominator with a denominator, We get: = ( 3*-5)/ (7*4), =(-15) / 28. Example Of Rational Number For addition of these two quantities we just need to equalize the denominator first then we have to add them. We dont need to do any application with the numerator. For equalizing the denominator we need to follow some specific rules: We have to multiply both the denominator and numerator with the same integer so the value of fraction doesnt change and we have to multiply the integer in a manner ReadMoreAboutRationalNumbersPropertiesWorksheets Tutorcircle.com PageNo.:2/5

so that the value of both the denominator will be same or for simplification you can multiply the first value by denominator of second and second value with the denominator of first. Now, lets see how to multiply 3*5/4*5+4*4/5* 4, the denominator of first number is 4 and we have multiply it on both the numerator and denominator. The denominator of second number is 5 and we have multiplied it on both the numerator and denominator. Negative Rational Numbers The numbers which are written in form of a/b where a and b are integers such that b0 all comes in the family of Rational Numbers. Positive Rational Numbers are those which have both numerators and denominators as positive or negative. Example: 5/7, 6/5 or (-3/-4) are positive rational numbers. Negative Rational Numbers are the numbers which have either numerator or denominator as negative. Example: -3/7, -5/8 0r 5/-8 are negative rational numbers. Negative rational number must have at least one negative value that can either be numerator or denominator. Introduction to Rational numbers Today, I will tell you a story. Once there was a family of Natural numbers where all counting numbers used to live. One day a guest named zero visited the house and requested for a permission to stay there.

All were happy; they requested the eldest member of the family Mr. infinite () to grant the permission for 0. The permission was granted and the name of the house was changed to house of Whole numbers. Now, after some time negative numbers also visited the house and requested for the permission to be the part of the family. They were permitted and now the family became the family of Integers i.e. - . ..-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,.. On seeing the family living together, some numbers which were in form of p/q, where p and q are natural numbers also asked for a permission to stay there. They were called fractions. Some fractions are 4/7, 2/5 etc. The family of fractions also told that if you all see the denominator with you, which is not usually visible, then you will also become the part of fractions family. All the numbers started trying it and realized that they all are the part of fractions. But this was not true for negative integers.
