REFLECTIONS
from the editor
Jackie Peters
jpeters@naturespathways.com

April is always an exciting time of year

for those of us who plant gardens. The earth becomes ready to till, temperatures are on the rise and our energy levels seem to get a spike. Growing up, my dad had it mastered. Just the right seed varieties were ordered, crop rotation was mapped out and soil was prepared to perfection. Let the work begin! It is so appropriate that we celebrate Earth Day this month. April 22 marks the 42nd anniversary of this movement to encourage awareness and appreciation for Earth and its resources. This year, Earth Day Network calls upon more than one billion people around the globe to help Mobilize the Earth. We are encouraged to unite for a sustainable future and encourage others, including organizations and governments, to do their part. What difference can we make? Maybe, as a family, you could plant a tree in remembrance of a departed loved one; or individually make a commitment to write to your government officials, shop local or invest in reusable, canvas shopping bags. When taken collectively, these small acts can make a difference! We have so many great articles to share with you this month. Natasha Fuller offers some natural options for preventing seasonal allergies. Marcia Simler shares several ways to get natural cures right from your own kitchen. And, J. Orkowski touches on ways to get your children to eat right. These are just a few examples of ways you can live healthier and reduce your carbon footprint please read on for more! Best wishes to all of you on your path to healthy living. Please find a special way to leave your mark this Earth Day!

In health and happiness,

Do you have a comment or question about something you read in Nature's Pathways? Is there a story you'd like to read? How about something you didn't like as much? Whatever your opinion, we want to know! Please e-mail Jackie at jpeters@naturespathways.com or info@naturespathways.com. Thanks for reading!

Creating and using crystal medicine bags .......................................................................

By Ashley Leavy

edicine is considered to be any number of objects or energies that can help heal physical, emotional, mental or spiritual wounds, so that you can continue to evolve and grow as a person. Healing crystals are considered to be a very special kind of medicine. The tradition of using crystals in medicine bags extends to cultures throughout time and in all parts of the globe, including Native peoples from North and South America, as well as healers from many African nations, Europe and Asia. Medicine bags are worn to enhance the users personal power and to provide the wearer with guidance, healing energy, luck and protection. Bags and pouches were traditionally filled with objects that were meaningful to the user, and so, were considered to be very sacred. These objects were honored for their role in personal

empowerment. In modern times, medicine bags can be used to provide guidance for your spiritual journey, as your sacred medicine objects and crystals help to connect you to your spiritual nature. The sacred objects used in your medicine bag may include things like crystals, bones, feathers, stones, shells, or any other objects that are meaningful and sacred to you. The objects you choose may represent different aspects of your life, or they may represent parts of yourself that you want to see grow and develop spiritually.
Medicine bags traditionally contained a clear crystal because it has memory and can be programmed. Shamans around the world have always utilized the special power of quartz for healing purposes. (Zerner 18)

By using crystals, quartz or others, in your medicine bag, you create a source of energy and power to draw upon for healing work, focus, personal growth or inspiration. You may choose your medicine stones by their appearance (color, shape, texture,
6
Natures Pathways | April 2012

etc.) or by the way that they make you feel (how they affect your emotions, your physical body, your way of thinking or your sense or spirituality). It is suggested that you choose your stones intuitively, but you may also find it helpful to choose healing crystals based on their known properties.
It is important to honor the stones you select as the ancient ones containing the cosmic pulsations of cosmic wisdom. (Zerner 52)

When used with an attitude of honor and respect, the bag and its contents are able to bring the shaman in touch with powers of his or her innermost being. (Zerner 17)

Once you have selected all of the objects for your medicine bag, it should be easy to see how each of these objects reflects an aspect of yourself. You will find that your medicine bag will feel comfortable as it has your own personal touch. Ideally, these pieces of yourself should help to provide support, comfort and personal empowerment as you continue down your life path. The materials and design of the actual bag or pouch should also be selected carefully, as the energy of the pouch is equally as important as its contents. You may be attracted to work with a particular color of fabric to bring in the healing energy of that color ray; similarly, you may want to embellish your medicine bag with symbols of a particular deity, power animal or spiritual guide. After selecting your bag and cleansing your crystals, you should empower your medicine bag. To do this, place your bag and stones in front of you (it is suggested that you do this in sacred space). Pick up one object or crystal at a time, hold it in your hands and think about why you have chosen it for your medicine bag. Place the object inside of your medicine bag while holding this intention. Once all of your stones and objects are within the pouch, hold it between your hands and visualize it filling with pure, healing light energy from the Universe. You should then thank the bag and its content for playing a role in your personal healing. You are now ready to wear your medicine bag. You may choose to wear it daily, for special occasions or during particularly rough patches of your life. Alternatively, you may choose to place the medicine bag on your altar, in a sacred space, or to carry it in a purse or pocket. As you continue your lifes journey, you may find that you want to add or remove items from your medicine bag. This is to be expected because as you grow and change, your means of support and empowerment will also naturally grow and change. If you are intuitively guided to change the contents of your medicine pouch, you should trust your inner knowing and make adjustments.

The more you work with your medicine bag, the more it will begin to vibrate to the frequency of your highest good and with the energy of your spiritual self. Crystal healing is not meant to replace conventional medicine, but rather to complement and enhance it. The information here is purely metaphysical in nature and is by no means medical. Crystal healing should only be used with the understanding that it is not an independent therapy, but one that is a part of a holistic healing approach.
Ashley Leavy has been drawn to work with crystals and stones since childhood. After years of self-study, she began earning a number of professional certifications in crystal healing. Ashley is a master of crystology and is certified and accredited in Melodys Level I & Level II Love is in the Earth Workshops. She has also studied with Master Crystal Teacher DaEl Walker of the Crystal Awareness Institute. April showers bring Pet anxiety? ......................................................................

By Dr. Jodie

hunderstorms and spring trips to the vet or groomer may be warm weather phobias that send your dog or cat into full panic mode, whining, barking frantically, trembling, pacing! Holistic veterinarians can suggest solutions for this distress that are healthier than conventional tranquilizers. An effective natural solution often requires a multimodal approach, however. Nervous attempts to calm your pet can make matters worse. You need to be the voice of reason. You need to be calm and confident. Go about your business as if everything is fine and routine. Your pet looks to you for courage and strength. Too much wooing and cooing can make him think that there is a reason to be concerned. Play some relaxing music in your home if it is raining and there is lightning or in your car if your pet is distraught while traveling in a vehicle. However, this is not the time for rock music! Thundershirts mimic the effect attained when one swaddles an infant. The snugness of a blanket, a onesie, a tight t-shirt provides a sense of security. Some pets will hide in the bathtub, under the bed or in a closet to try to achieve this same effect on their own. Some brands of thundershirts provide extra pressure at acupuncture points that are associated with sedation. Most pets are calmer and safer if restrained in a carrier or pet seatbelt when traveling in a vehicle on the way to an unnerving appointment. A flower essence blend called Rescue Remedy has been used for years to calm anxious humans and animals. As this is a homeopathic, it is most effective when the symptom picture is matched, if it is selected as a remedy. Since this is often not possible, you will find this product works like a charm for some individuals and not at all for others. Because it is not consistently effective, I do not routinely recommend it, however, it does not hurt to try it. Flower essences are extremely safe.

Natures Pathways | April 2012

I have found western herbal formulations to be more reliable than homeopathics; however, they are very dose dependent. They only work if you give enough. I use glycerin extracts for dogs and cats. They are weaker than alcohol extracts, but sweeter, therefore much more palatable, especially for cats. My favorite product is the Animal Apawthecary Tranquility Blend. This liquid is safe for a dog or cat. I recommend one full dropper orally for a cat or tiny dog, up to four full droppers for a large dog such as a retriever. This takes twenty to thirty minutes to relax your pet, so you need to plan accordingly. This can be used several times in one day if needed. This should not be used daily, long term. The energetics of foods and herbs can diminish or exacerbate anxiety. The Animal Apawthecary Blend of valerian, skullcap, oatstraw and passion flower was expertly formulated by Greg Tilford, a trusted herbalist who authored Herbs for Pets and harvests quality plants from his land in Montana. In 1969, a study performed on cats given valerian orally showed a decrease in restlessness, fear and aggression. Lab animal research has demonstrated sedative and anticonvulsant properties of valerian whole herb extract and some of its constituents via an influence on GABAnergic neurons. If daily calming is needed, a Chinese herbal formulation may be beneficial. Dr. Huisheng Xie, founder and instructor at the Chi Institute, a foremost veterinary acupuncture school in Florida, has

formulated a 16 herbal blend called Shen Calmer. Shen means mind. Pets and horses who are shen disturbed will relax, fidget less, travel better and be more receptive to training, veterinary or grooming care when they consume this plant combination on a regular basis. This brown powder can be mixed in food. One of the herbals contained within is Chai hu, also known as bupleurum. In mice studies, it has not only been shown to have sedative properties, but also immunostimulant and liver protective. Research on its constituents has demonstrated analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and even antibiotic effects. Another very pleasant modality used to soothe man and beast is aromatherapy. A cold air, nebulizing diffuser is the best method to deliver potent calming essential oils to an anxious patient. However, a drop on the fur or pet bed can be quick, simple, effective and inexpensive. Tiny diffusers are also manufactured to attach to a pets collar. Perhaps the essential oil with the most notoriety for calming is lavender. My favorite blend is called Peace and Calming. It contains blue tansy, patchouli, tangerine, orange and ylang ylang. Tangerine contains esters and aldehydes, which are sedating and calming. A 1995 Mie University study documented the ability of citrus fragrances to bring about a sense of security in humans. Animals are more sensitive to the effects of oils.

Many pets will calm with a gentle touch or even enjoy a massage. I call massage petting with intent. You may combine, in fact you should combine, several of these techniques for maximum effectiveness.

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Protein digestion, activity on days off and questionable supplements ....................................................................
By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: Is it true that you can only digest 30 grams of protein at a time? Answer: No this is definitely a myth. Some claim that Lou Ferrigno came up with this one back in the 1970s, but no one knows for sure. I am amazed at how many people think this is true, and Im also curious to know where these folks think the rest of the protein (above and beyond 30 grams) goes if it isnt digested. The simple truth is that you can digest any amount of protein that you ingest, but the caveat here is that the digestive process will just take that much longer. This is true of any macronutrient. The more you eat, the longer it takes to process simple as that. If you happen to hear this myth being bantered about in the gym at some point, be sure to put forth the real facts.

Question: Is it okay to do casual physical activities on my days off from working out? Answer: Absolutely! Scheduled physical activities arent necessarily warranted, but it doesnt mean you cant go out and have fun. This includes playing with your kids, going for a walk with your spouse or partner or playing a sport with some friends. Youll obviously improve your fitness and health by doing this and, for most folks, it really isnt
10
Natures Pathways | April 2012

going to be detrimental to your training regimen. Only elite athletes typically abstain from all forms of physical activity on their days off, and thats generally because their bodies are under so much stress during their daily training. Days off were never meant to be spent lounging on the couch watching movies, though occasionally thats just fine too! Question: I have a friend thats using some questionable supplements. How should I approach him given the fact that he seems to believe theyre working well? Answer: This is a tough question to answer, but you might want to start by telling him that diet is a huge part of the equation, and that supplementation, though useful at times, cant make up for a deficient diet. Then, I would have him meet with a qualified expert that can take a look at the supplements hes using and provide some real, science-based feedback on the safety and efficacy of the products. Sports dietitians have specialized training in this area, and you can find one in your area by checking out the SCAN Web site (www.scandpg.org). Keep in mind, if he truly feels that the supplements are helping him achieve his goals, there might not be anything you can say that will change his mind. Just know that you did all you could.

Allergies
Is there such a thing? ....................................................
By Chaz Ebert, DC

m thrilled to have a chance to connect with you through this article, and I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to give it a read! Listen, this article is designed not to give you answers, but rather to challenge your thinking so you can come up with answers on your own! I have practice members tell me all the time, I have allergies, and Ive had them for a long time. The allergies are caused by such things as dogs, cats, pollen and dust just to name a few. Every time Im around those things I start sneezing, coughing, my nose starts to run and my eyes begin watering. It really affects my life! When I hear this, I feel terrible because I can tell it truly is affecting their lives at work, at home and with their hobbies. The question I have to ask, however, is, If the allergies were truly caused by dogs, cats, pollen and dust why isnt everybody allergic to them? After all, we are all exposed to those things at some point! So why doesnt everybody start sneezing, coughing, get a runny nose and have watery eyes when they are exposed to these things? Do I have you thinking yet? Maybe its not the dogs, cats, pollen or dust that is causing the allergic reactions, but rather your bodys inability to properly adapt to its environment. Or, maybe allergic reactions are a perfectly healthy thing, not pleasant, but perfectly normal. Your body is amazingly smart and health is your bodys default! Its what chiropractors call innate intelligence. Its that inborn wisdom that runs and controls your body without you even having to think about it! It wants you to be healthy and will do everything it can to keep you healthy. Think about it. Youre smart; you know that inhaling pet dander, pollen or dust is a bad thing! So when you are exposed to these things, your body reacts. The sneezing, coughing, runny nose and watery eyes are all defense mechanisms that your amazing body has against the particles in the environment! These reactions actually keep the bad stuff out! Amazing, right? Guess what controls those healthy reactions and that innate intelligence its your nervous system. Your brain sends signals over the nervous system to tell your body how to react perfectly. If you have interference or pressure on the nervous system, your body cannot function or heal at 100%. These interferences are
www.naturespathways.com

what chiropractors call subluxations, or misalignments of the spinal bones that put pressure on the nervous system and affect the way your body is functioning. Wait doc, are you saying that chiropractic can cure allergies? No sir. As a matter of fact, chiropractic doesnt cure anything! No doctor does; and anybody that tells you different is lying. You and your body alone are the only things that can heal anything! What chiropractic does is remove the interference in your bodys innate ability to heal itself. When your body and your nervous system are functioning at 100%, then your body will have the very best chance to express true health! So you have a couple of options: You can run to the drug store and load up on allergy medications that might mask a symptom (not to mention the side effects) or you can work to correct the cause of the problem naturally by allowing your bodys innate intelligence to express itself fully! Which one makes the most sense to you? In chiropractic offices all over the world there are thousands of people every single day choosing the second option and loving every second of it! When was the last time you had your spine and nervous system checked?

A monthly advice column for your energy system .....................................................................

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, How do distance healings work? It just doesnt make sense how an energy worker can balance someone when they are not physically there. Could you explain this please? Keeping My Distance Dear Keeping My Distance, I completely understand why the idea of distance energy work, healings and readings just doesnt make sense. Let me explain. First off, energy is everything. Energy can never be created or destroyed. What is here has always been here and always will. It cannot disappear, it can only change forms. Our bodies are energy as well as our thoughts, feelings, spiritual purpose, etc. Energy is everything. It is basically data communicating to the world around us. When a healer connects to a client, he/she is connecting to that persons energy; not only the energy of their bodies, but everything that embodies them. I can only speak to my process, so after I connect to a client, I tune into their energy through sight, sound and touch. I speak directly to their spirit, which brings their whole energy system in front of me and shows me what needs to be worked on. Since energy is simply communicating data, it doesnt

matter where the person is physically located. Sometimes I have in-person clients that need to use the bathroom in the middle of the session. Thats no bother because Im already connected to them; I just continue the healing as they take care of business! The important thing to think of related to distance work is your comfort level. Most crucial is trust. You should feel comfortable with the practitioner and trust that they are actually working with your system since you are not physically there. Second, if you feel you need an in-person session to get the full effects, honor that need. Again, the process for a practitioner is the same whether youre in-person or not; however, if it doesnt feel real to you, the healing wont stick. Your comfort is a first priority. Many people prefer distance work because you usually get a full report detailing the session, which may be difficult to remember if you are just listening during the in-person session.
Tina, a Madison Intuitive Counselor and Energy Healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

Getting kids to eat right .................................................................

By J. Orkowski

ow can we get our kids to eat healthier? That is a great question; first lets look at what is against us and then what we need to do to combat it.

Kids are bombarded by media messages telling them to eat terrible processed foodlike products that have no nutritional value. They see more ads for Coke, Snickers and McDonalds than they ever will for locally

grown, fresh or healthy food. When is the last time you saw an ad for a vegetable? Truth is, like politics, the guys who have the worst to offer have the most money to spend on telling you why you need it.

14

Natures Pathways | April 2012

www.naturespathways.com

Straight out, theyre lying. Theyre lying to make money. Sadly, we all fall for it. Like subliminal messages, they creep in when you are least prepared to fight them off. I will confess to buying an item because I was watching TV the night before and they told me I was missing out on real cookie flavor unless I got the new super fudgy blah blah blah. There I was in the check out; Dang, they got me! Just as we have our own views swayed into action, kids will see what we do and choose and emulate us. What we have working against us is that we make terrible choices too. If we want our children to make better choices we need to as well. But what our problem is, is that maybe we havent bought into healthy eating ourselves. We should. We know this much: All people, including children, manufacture free radicals as a by-product of metabolism. These free radicals cause destruction and aging of our cells and our bodies. The more active a person is the more free radicals they will produce. On average, children are more active than we adults (If your child is not as active as you, stop reading this article and call me ASAP at 608-848-FLIP!). This is a fact. The only way to reduce these risks is to consume food with good antioxidants. The antioxidants in fruit and veggies neutralize those free radicals. Once more, the fiber in raw plant food (raw is always better than cooked) can lower your cholesterol, scrub clean the intestinal walls and reduce the risk of diabetes by slowing carbohydrate absorption. Food with antioxidants can lower the risk of many types of cancer. Convinced yet? How about the case of phytochemicals? Phytochemicals that can be found in raw fruits and veggies will reduce the risk of many types of other diseases. Did you know there are over 1000 phytochemicals in a single tomato? Mmm. There are also minerals in grown food, like calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium that are all vital to proper body function, making us efficient; and whats better, theyre making us less prone to sickness and making us feel good (as opposed to tired, lazy, stupid, inefficient, sick and depressed). If whats against us is the media, our habits and a lack of facts ... thats easy. 1. Stop buying what they pitch. That will save
www.naturespathways.com

on the family budget, too. Every once and awhile a treat is fine; even the most healthy among us is allowed the occasional cookie. Just realize that you are not missing out on the real cookie flavor of super fudgy blah blah blahs. 2. Change your habits. An apple is better than a Snickers any day, and the remnants of a consumed apple are biodegradable, not so of our friend the Snickers bar (my inner-tree hugger is showing). And 3. Get facts. They come best from someone who is not selling something. So be wise in your Web information diet queries.
Here are some great strategies for getting your kids (and you) to eat more fruits and veggies:

presentation or a different recipe and go again. Kids may turn up their noses, but get them to keep trying something. There is research that shows that kids need exposure to foods sometimes as much as 14 times before they admit to liking it. That number does not apply to liver. Use recipes that blend healthy food in with other foods until kids realize that it wont kill them. I love Jessica Seinfelds book about deceptive recipes for kids. In fact we have made everything in the book and my kids often ask for repeats. They also noticed that it didnt taste as good when I re-made some dishes without the secret ingredients. What we know is that raw fruit and veggies are the building blocks for healthy bodies. Thats a fact. Its also a fact that raw fruit and veggies make us healthier. It might take some work, but isnt feeling better and living healthier worth a little effort?

Keep fruit in the house. Dont buy a ton of it because when it rots it negatively reinforces your feelings toward not spending money on a snack that will go to waste. Have a little bit of fruit or vegetable cut up and ready to be chosen. Make its access easier. When you crave a sweet snack, grab fruit. My wife changed my mind as I grabbed my car keys and told her I was going to the store to grab something sweet. She tossed me an apple without a word. Busted. How can I argue with that? Let your kids see you eating good food as a snack selection. In the above scene, my wife didnt have to toss my boys any apples. When they saw what dad was having (and realized there was no hope of him bringing chocolate home any time soon) they got their own apples. Send fruit or vegetables to school in lunches. Again, accessibility is essential. At dinner time, serve a salad as a separate course as opposed to a part of the main meal, just like in a restaurant. Kids get the salad when they are most hungry and it will fill them with good nutrition right away; not to say the rest of your meal is not nutritious, just saying get them good fuel when the tank is low. Be satisfied if they eat only a portion of the salad course, its better than nothing at all. Victory comes in small doses, its OK. Keep trying new fruits and veggies, dont take yuck for an answer. Spring cleaning to manifest the chakras in our homes

Turning your life and home into a sanctuary! ......................................................................
By Heidi Kelley

s The Intuitive Realtor in Madison, I talk to sellers about the importance of decluttering in an effort to get their home sold, but it is also very important in our daily lives. When we clear out clutter, we are opening up our lives to manifesting, to receiving what we are wanting in our lives. Clearing out the clutter is about letting go, letting your unloved or unused items go and allowing the energy chi to flow. Our homes have energy in them just like our bodies; our rooms actually mimic our chakra centers. Take a look at your living space and see how it relates to your own life; see if they mirror your blocked chakras.

A basement that is full and disorganized could mean financial or security problems. A kitchen that is jumbled and messy could reflect love or relationship troubles. An overstuffed living room could lead to stuffing your feelings, basically not speaking up for yourself.

Rooms and living spaces that typically represent the major chakras are:
Crown Chakra: attic, roof Brow Chakra: den, home office, windows Throat Chakra: living room, family room Heart Chakra: kitchen, dining areas Solar Plexus Chakra: bathrooms, personal spaces Sacral Chakra: master bedroom Root Chakra: basement, crawl spaces Aura: porches, decks, landscaping, garages

Many of us have the tendency to collect clutter. I admit, I am still a work in progress. I came from a family that saved everything; we might need it in the future. When we hang onto our unused items, saving them for a rainy day, we are basically saying we dont have the faith that we will receive what we need in the future. We are living in fear, lack and scarcity. This is how many of our ancestors lived and it has been passed on generation to generation. I have found the more I clear out of my house, the more I make room for new. One thing that I learned is to ask myself if I love the item, if I dont, I get rid of it. We should only have items surrounding us that we truly love, that really make us happy. This not only helps our house look better, but it improves how we feel, which in turn raises the energy level in the house, that ultimately raises

the vibration in our body. It is a continuous cycle that assists us to manifest and achieve our dreams! Clutter and disharmony block our mental and spiritual energy and make it harder to create, prosper and manifest new things into our lives. When we create a space by getting rid of the old, the new comes into our life. So if you get rid of old clothes, you are making space for new clothes to be manifested in your life. One final thought: You must be open to receiving. Sometimes the clutter is your own self-sabotaging block to get in the way of your desire. Listen to your heart and try to understand if you have any deep fear about the outcome of what you want to manifest. Do you think you will lose the memories if you sell your home or that your family wont accept your new career? Listen to your heart, your soul, your intuition and then be open to receive. Now it is time for me to head to the basement to start clearing out!

Taking it to another level

Great American Chimney & Masonrys Bingham in a class by himself
By Jackie Peters

Be it the Inca Walls in Cusco or the Parthenon in Greece, spectacular creations have been constructed out of stone from the earth across varied cultures since the beginning of civilization. These historic stonemasons must have had such passion to do such physical and tedious work. Their longlasting masterpieces seem to connect us with our ancient ancestors. There is a certain respect for the handwork of masonry; the skill and precision of which cannot be matched by any technology of the modern world. Such passion and respect is still alive today. Ernest Bingham, of Great American Chimney & Masonry in Madison, has devoted his life to perfecting the craft. In fact, he is recognized as one of the top masons in the Midwest. Bingham began to pursue his trade in the early 1970s when he became a builders apprentice in California. (It is interesting to note that this manner of learning also existed long ago, when medieval stonemasons served seven-year apprenticeships; todays last about four years.) He later studied under a Scottish master in West Virginia. At that point he was encouraged to study the craft at The Lime Centre in England and the Scottish Lime Centre in Edinburgh both renowned for teaching the intricacies of traditional building skills.

Bingham opened his business in Madison in 1977, determined to preserve Americas masonry. He is still here doing so today. Historic masonry restoration is his strong suit. Mostly being dispatched to older houses (75 years old and up), hes happy to have the challenge of a 200-year-old project. In one case, Jim Notstad, of Monona, whos worked with Bingham for 30 years, hired him to build a fireplace and outside chimney on a structure built in 1848. Obviously the bricks were quite aged, so Bingham obtained bricks of the same consistency and color from an old church he was working on. He worked his magic and the final result actually exceeded my expectations, says Notstad. If you look at the exterior, the area where the work was done looks like part of the original structure and everything works perfectly. Bingham, understandingly, takes pride in this. A master fireplace builder, he is a member of the National Trust for Historical Preservation, a founder of the Wisconsin Chimney Sweep Guild, which later became the Wisconsin Guild of Chimney Service Specialists, a NFI Certified Master and a multiple certification carrier in historic masonry. The average person doesnt understand that historic and modern masonry are very different, says Bingham. People should be wary of contractors that use modern mortars to repair old buildings, as it will destroy them. Properly done, this type of repair, or repointing, restores the visual and physical integrity of the masonry. Improperly done, repointing not only detracts from the appearance of the building, but may also cause physical damage to the masonry units themselves, according to Technical Preservation Services. Eileen Sutula of Madison can attest to the frustration involved with correcting poorly done repairs. We had a leak in our attic for 15 years due to our chimney. During this time we had it rebuilt twice by two other contractors in an attempt to resolve the problem. Finally, we were saved by Ernest. He said he would fix it for the LAST time and that is exactly what he did. We couldnt be more pleased. Not only is he an amazing craftsman, but he is also an artist. His work is just beautiful!

As the authority in masonry repairs, Bingham has also invested his time and money on applying for patents on various tools of the trade that he is sure will make life easier for his fellow masons. These include, Mortar Match, the Speed Hawk and a biomass windcap, among others. The ideal time to do masonry repair in our biospheric zone is from March to September. So, Bingham encourages people to call now for service, as the season fills up fast. If youd like a quote, hes happy to provide one. In fact, in the history of his company, he has never exceeded an estimate! Although hes had to pay for that over time, he remains a man of his word.

Now thats a commitment carved in stone!

When every blade of grass counts .............................................................

By Tina Lupiezowiec

veryone knows someone who, with great zeal, tends their lawn with the blind passion and steely determination of an Olympic athlete set on winning the gold. Outsiders dont understand that the American obsession with meticulously

manicured, lush green grass often stems from a nostalgic and romantic place. A grassstained knee is as American as apple pie and the girl next door. The idea of grass is hardwired in the modern American psyche from word go: Bombarded with grassy tableaux images at every turn, from childrens books to laundry detergent advertisements, actual grassy memories overlap with those crafted by others; such that everyone can agree that its wonderful to roll about in thick, cool grass; to stumble and fall, football clutched to chest onto the softest terrain imaginable not a twig in sight on which to scratch oneself; to lay on ones back with loved ones near, calling out cloud shapes floating high above as butterflies and bees busily dart about their days labors. Ah, lovely grass! It raises property values and, when impeccably tended, has the added bonus of comforting those passing by with

Everyone can agree that its wonderful to roll about in thick, cool grass; to stumble and fall, football clutched to chest onto the softest terrain imaginable
the knowledge that nature is under control; all can feel safe and secure. Never mind that hardly a day goes by without news of one harmful effect or another to humans, insects, animals and the environment, resulting from the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. When every blade of grass counts and control is the goal, people justify the means for the idealized end. Reality often differs from an ideal. Too often, when the green veil is lifted, the reality that the green spaces around apartments, homes and office building have become sad reminders of a time that has passed, a time when people werent so busy, neighbors interacted socially and children spent more time outdoors than indoors. green spaces is noble; controlling nature at any cost, is not. The stakes dont have to be high. Sustainable solutions abound. One growing trend in turf, pest and disease management has been the transition from less effective and more harmful to the environment (and wallet) chemical fertilizer and pesticide treatments, to the application of compost tea and/or straight-up compost.

Compost not only fertilizes plants, it also rebuilds soil microbiology and helps with weed and disease suppression. Research into the effects of compost teas on golf course greens, for instance, has shown that compost teas improve turf health and suppress disease.1 Long, long ago, an eccentric urban farmer uttered words that still resonate to this day, One mans

dandelion weed is another mans dandelion jelly. Quit being so romantic about your grass and grow some flowers for the bees for crying out loud! Thoughtfully made compost or compost tea, applied correctly, is a viable option for turf management.

Turf: The mat of grass plants [aka. sod], their interwoven roots, as well

as the entangled soil that forms the body of any stretch of lawn.2
Decomposition: The breaking-down by microorganisms of plant and

animal residues.3
Composting: Is the purposeful act of controlling nitrogen, carbon, air and water to

quicken the biological decomposition of organic matter.4

Compost: The byproduct of composting, compost is a valuable, nutrient-rich, humus-

like material rich in organic matter and beneficial soil microorganisms. It improves soil tilth (texture & feeling), drainage of clay soils and the water holding capacity of sandier soils. It also improves soil nutrient retention and suppresses some soil-borne plant diseases.5
Compost Tea: Is an umbrella term referring to a nutrient and/or microorganism rich

solution prepared by releasing compost nutrients and microbiology into solution.6 Some people make compost tea to be the extract of compost made by suspending compost in a barrel of water for a short period of time, usually in a burlap sack. The resulting liquid can then be applied as a soil or foliar fertilizer. To others, its not compost tea until the extract is fermented or brewed usually with some type of microbial nutrient source such as molasses, kelp, fish byproducts and/or humic acids.7

minerals: iron, manganese, magnesium and calcium. This herb also contains vitamins A, C and some of the B-complex, and flavonoids and tannins. Red raspberry leaf is also rich in silicon, which helps strengthen bones, nails and teeth, and promotes healthy skin. Raspberry leaves are most renown as an excellent toner and astringent for the female reproductive organs. In France, red raspberry leaves are considered a tonic for the prostate gland. Red raspberry is considered an excellent herb for pregnancy. Red raspberrys qualities include strengthening the uterine muscles, enriching early colostrum in breast milk and easing labor. Red raspberry in combination with peppermint is used for alleviating morning sickness. Red raspberry is commonly blended with some other female tonic herbs and used in the last five weeks of pregnancy to facilitate an easier delivery and quicker recovery. Red raspberry also normalizes menstrual flow and relieves cramping, which makes it a good tonic for menstruating women. Due to the large amount of manganese in red raspberry leaves, it can be helpful to relieve ringing in the ear. Too much red raspberry can cause loose bowels. Raspberry leaves can be infused in hot water to make tea. This is done by pouring one cup of boiling water over one or two teaspoons of raspberry leaves and allowing to steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink. Other methods of preserving the leaves are by drying them and putting them in capsules or making them into a tincture. A quote from the renowned Quaker herbalist, Henry Box: A tea made from red raspberry leaves is the best gift God ever gave to women.

The power to heal ....................................................

By Leora Weitzman, PhD, LMT

here does the power to heal reside? Are we healed by others, or do we heal ourselves? A third possibility begins to emerge when we remember that were not as separate as we appear. While to our senses were distinct packages wrapped in skin, in reality the worlds edges are softer and more porous than that. For one thing, solid-seeming surfaces are made of electrons flying through space around protons and neutrons, and tiny particles readily pass through skin in either direction. But theres a more significant form of interconnection. Like all living beings, were filled and surrounded with electromagnetic energy fields that contain information about our physical, mental and emotional states. This information silently and subtly radiates from us. Through a process called entrainment, we catch each others moods, much as an object vibrating at a certain frequency causes susceptible neighboring objects (like violin strings or crystal glasses) to vibrate at the same frequency. Moods are not all thats catching; the frequency at which a healthy organ or a healing fracture vibrates can be caught from the energy of a nearby hand or a suitably tuned machine. When this happens, the body recognizes and matches the frequency of the nearby hand (or machine). Emotional healing can work the same way. With experience and training, one can tune ones state of mind to match that of
www.naturespathways.com

a person whos grieving or feeling stuck then model the way up and out, creating a vibrational path that the other can in turn choose to match. So whos doing the healing? Both people together, and its possible because our energies connect; like sound waves, they travel between us and influence one another. If we wish to heal, either ourselves or others, then, it makes sense to learn to modulate our own energy. To that end, TIBIA regularly offers Freeing the Power to Heal: The Foundation Workshop (next dates: April 21-22, 2012) as well as more advanced courses. The introductory workshop includes centering and grounding while connecting with each other, observing habitual energy patterns and releasing/surrendering unwanted energy. Along with these practices, it provides a framework for continuing to discern and transform previously unconscious aspects of the self. This type of training is useful for everyone. Its beneficial effects ripple out well beyond the participants, since each ones energy touches family, friends, neighbors, clients, co-workers ... companion animals perhaps the entire earth, if ever so slightly. Training like this can reduce the unconscious violence we do each other when we allow a bad mood to fuel our interactions. Often we rationalize and justify our actions so we wont see what were really doing. My father never gave us a beating we didnt deserve, writes Derrick Jensen with some

irony in "A Language Older than Words." How many times are we harsh with others and then quick to excuse ourselves so we wont feel bad? The good news is that we have a choice. Id like to urge each of us to continue developing awareness and freedom in relation to our own energy so that we can, collectively, tap into the power to heal.

Natural options for preventing seasonal allergies

You dont need to hide indoors to enjoy spring without seasonal allergy symptoms ......................................................................
By Natasha Fuller

llergy season does not have to be a miserable time for those suffering from seasonal allergies. Symptoms of itchy, watery eyes, sinus pressure, and stuffy or runny noses are treatable with natural alternatives. Traditional therapies for seasonal allergies include: over-thecounter medicines that can leave you feeling drowsy and foggyheaded; prescription medications that often have the same effect; and staying indoors. As the trees prepare to bloom and pollen fills the air, many are tempted to watch from behind windows in order to avoid triggering an allergic reaction. But, there are ways to enjoy the outdoors during spring! When staying indoors is no longer an option, seasonal allergy sufferers can take comfort in knowing that natural alternatives assist in feeling better without frustrating side effects. Prevention is ideal. Acupuncture and herbs are natural options for prevention of seasonal allergies. When the time for prevention has passed and treatment of symptoms is the primary concern, acupuncture provides a safe, natural alternative to traditional treatments.

The practitioner then treats the root of the problem. By treating the root of the problem, people suffering from allergies can achieve lasting results and reach the point of prevention.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the bodys skin at specific points located on the meridians. Acupuncture focuses on the movement and balancing of Qi in the body. For allergies, needles are placed in points specific to the symptoms the person is experiencing. For example, a fine needle is often placed in LI 20, located in the nasolabial groove, level with the midpoint of the lateral border of the ala nasi, to assist in draining the sinuses. Many people begin to feel relief by the end of their first treatment.

How can herbs help?

How does TCM view allergies?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks at the entire person; taking all symptoms into account, in order to diagnose the patient. It bases treatment on individuals. The treatment for a person having problems with a cough and dry, itchy eyes will be different from the treatment for a person with a phlegmy cough and watery eyes.

Herbs suggested for allergies are dependent on the root of the problem as determined by the acupuncturist or doctor of oriental medicine. Herbs support the body in healing and strengthening the Qi to prevent further symptoms.

When should I start?

It is important to remember that seasonal allergies are best controlled and prevented. So the sooner you receive acupuncture and herbs, the less you have to suffer with seasonal allergy symptoms.
Natasha Fuller is an assistant to Dr. Zhou of Dr. Zhous Acupuncture, Pain and Wellness Clinic in Madison. Dr. Zhou has successfully treated hundreds of patients suffering from seasonal allergies in his more than 30 years of experience. Please see our Web site at AcupunctureHerbalMD.com.

Experience the transformation as you attain a sleek, sexy and powerful self-image. At the core of Piloxing is the principle that feminine is powerful. Also, in April our window will be full of garden bricks by Lowell Elementary School 4th & 5th graders. These bricks were inspired from the bricks made last year for Hippo Park. They are continuing to raise money for building a library in Gahanna. We will be having a closing reception for Lowell Schools show on April 27th from 5:30p-7:30p. Sunday, Apr. 8 6-7 p.m.
