FEATURES The BCM956720K16S is a complete reference design and
evaluation system with 16 ports of HiGig/HiGig2 running up to 16 Gbps. The reference design system is based on the BCM56720 device, a high-density 256-Gbps full-duplex switch fabric and member of the StrataXGS product family.

The reference platform showcases the BCM56720 device, delivering 16 ports of HiGig/HiGig2 via iPass connectors and cabling. Each of the 16 ports can be configured to either HiGig or HiGig2 protocols running at 10 Gbps, 12 Gbps, or 16 Gbps. The BCM956720K16S also includes a modular CPU
subsystem capable of running advanced management software. The CPU subsystem connects to the main PCB via an internal XMC slot supporting either PCI Express or PCI. The CPU subsystem supports PowerPC8548.

Developing Your Switch The BCM956720K16S is a highly integrated solution for a 16-port HiGig/HiGig2 switch fabric. The BCM56720 provides a central fabric to connect to other StrataXGS packet processors via HiGig or HiGig2. The combined StrataXGS solution enables the accelerated development of the following types of switches: Layer 2 managed switch with support for spanning tree Layer 2 intelligent switch with IEEE 802.1p/Q support Layer 3 IP advanced routing switch Layers 27 ContentAware traffic-classifying switch The BCM956720K16S reference design is equipped with all the software and hardware necessary to simulate a typical system environment. The reference design is preloaded with a Wind River Systems VxWorks real-time operating system.
