ThE CITY OF EdINbURGh COUNCIL ELECTIONS 3 MAY 2012

You are electing not 1, but 4 Councillors to serve Meadows and Morningside. No one party is fielding enough candidates across Edinburgh to take overall control of the Council. A vote for the SNP or LibDems, who currently control Edinburgh Council would suggest you are happy with the last five years. This election is about local issues: the future ofour city services. Alison Johnstone, now an MSP, has been a hard-working, effective Councillor. If elected, Melanie Main pledges to continue the Greens Councillors excellent record by fighting hard to protect local services and improve the quality of life in the community.

MEADOWS AND MORNINGSIDES GREEN MOMENTUM

GREEN COUNCILLOR ALISON JOhNSTONE hAS bEEN hELPING MEAdOWS ANd MORNINGSIdE FOR FIVE YEARS
Alison Johnstone has worked with parents at South Morningside Primary School to increase access to physical education for all pupils. Tabling a motion to divert funds, previously used to pay for unnecessary coach travel between the school buildings, to hire halls. Alison has also championed local reusable bag schemes across the ward, involving local school children in design and cutting down on plastic bag waste. Following discussion with local traders, a motion from Alison on the barriers to recycling faced by small traders has made it possible for informal cooperatives of traders to get together, making this service more affordable. Supporting local residents and traders, she was successful in calling upon the Council to ask the Scottish Government to request a change to the planning process so that small local shops cannot simply become supermarkets with no recourse to the planning system. Alison has worked with representatives of community councils, and Friends of the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links, to ensure equitable access for all residents to these much loved and wellused urban green spaces.

nie With your vote, Mela will succeed Alison Johnstone MSP as lor your Green Council for Meadows and Morningside.

MAKING A dIFFERENCE
Greens in Edinburgh want to make Edinburgh a fairer and greener city and listen to the priorities of local people. We will: Defend public services provided by public bodies - opposing privatisation and demanding accountability from companies the Council works with. Support a programme of green jobs, investing in energy efficiency of homes, public buildings and energy generation. Protect public assets - our local schools, parks, libraries and leisure facilities. Use the Councils powers to back local businesses over giant supermarkets and chain-stores, breathing new life into neighbourhoods. Give more power to communities, including community Councils, parent Councils and residents groups.
Green Councillors were first elected in Edinburgh in 2007. Since then they have worked hard to make Edinburgh a greener and fairer city. INCOMING GREEN CANdIdATE MELANIE MAIN OUTLINES hER PROMISES ONCE ELECTEd
Supermarkets are invading our high street and the corner store because they know the future is local. The arrival of Sainsburys in Bruntsfields high street is a step too far - threatening its unique character. We must lay claim to our own neighbourhoods, and I will continue to campaign for our local shops and traders. Its official: Green Space is good for you, whoever you are. Astley Ainslie grounds, Craighouse, and the Royal Edinburgh sites, are all under threat. I will continue to fight to protect these existing green spaces and public access to them. Everyone knows the existing Council doesnt listen enough. We must make sure consultations count, and that local communities are listened to. I will propose that community groups are given real support and access to expertise and advice.

Melanie, pictured (above) with Rosie Barnes, has been an active supporter of the Save Craighouse Campaign.
