Discussion Questions DQ1: Due Tuesday, June 8th 2010 Consider the following statement: Psychology has a long past, but a short history. What do you think this means? In your opinion, which person or perspective has had the most influence on the growth of psychology?
Psychology has been around as a concept for a long time, but only because a science within the past few centuries. The general concept is the past, psychology as a science is the history. In my opinion I think that more than one person or perspective has had an influence on the growth of psychology. Not one person should be singled out on how successful the study of psychology has been. Psychology has had many influences and perspectives to increase its growth. For instance the founder Wilhelm Wundt was the person who found psychology in 1879. William James then found a link between physiology and philosophy, with the link being psychology. Sigmund Freud took part with very many aspects of the nervous system with psychology. Finally, John B. Watson handled a large amount of the behaviorism side of psychology. All four should have recognition for how much they tribute to the study of psychology. All four added parts of psychology in their own way. Each obviuosly contributed a great deal to the influence of psychology.

DQ2: Due Thursday, June 10th 2010 How do you think gender, race, and ethnicity have affected your behavior? Provide an example from your life where you have observed people from different ethnic backgrounds or genders behaving differently in the same situation.

When reading this question I first thought that gender race and ethnicity didnt affect my behavior. After rethinking the question I feel that gender does affect my behavior. I actually have a current situation dealing with me being a lady. Im a female I work in the handbags department and mens shoes department at work. I do mostly all the work in mens shoes far as stocking, opening boxes and selling. I was told about a month ago by my female manager I would no longer be working in mens shoes because woman dont sell as many shoes as a middle age man would in the department. I took that as a woman cant do what men can. I truly think that was untrue it was certainly not a fact. I sell more shoes then the men who work in the department. This actually encouraged I to work even harder and show her woman can do a better job than any man could. Race also affects my behavior. As being an African American female I try to prove others wrong by what is perceived about my race.

A good example would be club fights, or bar fights. Usually Caucasian fights dont escalate to shootings afterwards. Compared to African American fights they seem to also escalate into shoot outs or somebody getting shot. For what reason you may ask? All I can say is dim witted decisions.

2. CheckPoint: Stereotypes Paper Write a 200- to 300-word paper about the following: List two to three negative and positive stereotypes you have heard about a particular group of people. Some examples include athletes, women, Arab Americans, Christians, or other groups.

How does your perception of this group affect the way you communicate and interact with individuals who are members of this group? To be honest it doesnt affect the way I communicate with the group. I wasnt raised to treat a certain type of group differentlfy. I talk to them as I would anybody else. stereotyping I tell them you always cant believe what other people think or say. Or what I try to do is pay the stereotypes on TV no attention at all. I dont judge anybody before getting to know them.

To

be honest I think people shouldn'tt stereotype others because it may keep you from getting to know a wonderful person. It shouldn'tt matter what color, race, or sexuality someone is we are all the same.
