(1) Z-type engines: A lubricating oil with a BN of 40 mg KOH/g should be used with HFO, as the engines with piston lubrication tend to have a lower lubricating oil consumption than the engines with liner lubrication in which also BN 30 lubricating oils can be used. The application of a BN 50-55 lubricating oil is mainly restricted to the engines, which have very low lubricating oil consumption and whenever a BN 40 lubricating oil is not sufficient to maintain the BN above 20 mg KOH/g. (2) A & S-type engines: A BN 30 lubricating oil is recommended due to the trunk piston splash lubrication principle resulting in rather high lubricating oil consumption. If both distillate fuel and residual fuel are used periodically as fuel, lubricating oil quality has to be chosen according to instructions being valid for residual fuel operation, i.e. BN 30 is the minimum. Optimum BN in this kind of operation depends on the length of operating periods on both fuel qualities as well as of sulphur content of fuels in question. Thus in particular cases BN 40 or even higher BN lubricating oils should be used. The intervals between lubricating oil changes may be extended by adding oil daily to keep the oil level constantly close to the maximum level. An example of BN depletion curve with different BN lubricating oils is shown below.

3.4 Additives
The oils should contain additives that give good oxidation stability, corrosion protection, load carrying capacity, neutralisation of acid combustion and oxidation residues and should prevent deposit formation on internal engine parts (piston cooling gallery, piston ring zone and bearing surfaces in particular).

3.5 Foaming Characteristics

Fresh lubricating oil should meet the following limits for foaming tendency and stability, according to the ASTM D 892-01 test method: Sequence I: 100/0 ml Sequence II: 100/0 ml Sequence III: 100/0 ml

3.6 Base Oil

Use of virgin base stocks only is allowed, i.e. recycled or re-refined base oils are not allowed.

Condemning Limits for Used Lubricating Oil

When estimating the condition of used lubricating oil, the following properties along with the corresponding limit values must be noted. If one of these limits is reached, remedial action should be taken to bring the oil charge back to its normal condition. This could mean complete or partial renewal of the oil charge, although it might also be sufficient to intensify treatment of the oil in the centrifugal

Change of Lubricating Oil Brand

In order to minimize the risk of lubricating oil foaming, deposit formation, blocking of lubricating oil filters, damage of engine components, etc., the following procedure should be followed when lubricating oil brand is changed from one to another: If possible, change the lubricating oil brand in connection with an engine (piston) overhaul Drain old lubricating oil from the lubricating oil system Clean the lubricating oil system in case of an excessive amount of deposits on the surfaces of engine components, like crankcase, camshaft compartment, etc. Fill the lubricating oil system with fresh lubricating oil

If the procedure described above is not followed, responsibility of possible damage and malfunctions caused by lubricating oil change should always be agreed between an oil company and customer.

Lubricating Oil Maintenance and Treatment

The lubricating oil should be sampled at least every 3000 running hours, or 2 to 3 times-a-year. Samples should be taken from the specially fitted sampling cock while the engine is running, or the oil is still hot. The quantity of oil in circulation should be the same each time a sample is taken. Samples must be well labelled, representative of the complete oil charge in circulation and should not be contaminated after being drawn. The sample cock should be purged, a one litre sample drawn during a period of 10 minutes, the sample mixed thoroughly and decanted into a sampling bottle. The additive and wear metal content and the degree of contamination by fuel can also be determined. The significance of the analysis results is best assessed if they are considered as a whole and in relation to the past analytical history of the lubricating oil. The correct interpretation of an oil trend requires a knowledge of the specific lubricating oil consumption, the fuel oil type and how the lubricating oil is replenished.

The condition of the lubricating oil depends on the amount of lubricating oil in circulation. The level of the main lubricating oil tank should be kept within a range of 70% to 90%, and with no more than 10% of the charge replenished at any one time. In the course of time even the best quality lubricating oil shows signs of deterioration in condition due to ageing, oxidation and contamination caused by the working conditions, in such a way that a change of the oil charge is necessary. However it is not possible to give a fixed interval for this purpose since this is influenced by the operating conditions and the efficiency of the lubricating oil treatment.

Approved Lubricating Oil Qualities for Sulzer Z-, S- and A-Type Trunk-Piston Diesel Engines
Should unapproved lubricating oils be used during the engine warranty period, and there exist no agreement with the engine manufacturer about testing, the engine guarantee does not hold.

7.1 Gas Oil and Marine Diesel Oil Operation

If gas oil or marine diesel oil is used as fuel, lubricating oils with a BN of 10-25 are recommended to be used. Also BN 30 lubricating oils included in Table 5 can be used in gas oil and Marine Diesel Oil fuelled engines. Table 3: Approved lubricating oils - fuel categories A and B, recommended in the first place in gas oil or marine diesel oil installations:

7.2 Heavy Fuel Operation

Todays modern trunk piston diesel engines are stressing the lubricating oils heavily due to a.o. low specific lubricating oil consumption. Also ingress of residual fuel combustion products into the lubricating oil can cause deposit formation on the surface of certain engine components resulting in severe operating problems. Due to this many lubricating oil suppliers have developed new lubricating oil formulations with better fuel and lubricating oil compatibility. The lubricating oils mentioned in Table 4 are representing modern detergent/dispersant additive chemistries and have shown good performance in Sulzer engines. Table 4: Approved lubricating oils - fuel category C, recommended in the first place when operating on heavy fuel. The application of a BN 50-55 lubricating oil is mainly restricted to engines which have a very low lubricating oil consumption.

There is additionally available a number of mineral based lubricating oils, which can be used in ABBs VTR series turbochargers, if the turbocharger speed and pressure ratio in a specific installation are within the limits set by ABB. However, the special low friction synthetic oils listed above are offering longer change intervals and better performance and are thus preferred in the first place also in older installations with less severe operating conditions concerning turbocharger speed and pressure ratio. The list of mineral based oils can be supplied by request.

7.6 Approved Lubricating Oils for Governor/Actuator

The lubricating oil must conform to the lubricating oil requirements of the mechanical or hydraulic governor or actuator's original manufacturer. The following guidelines are supplementary to those requirements: If the nominal operating pressure is high (> 200 psi), as for most modern Sulzer engines, a synthetic polyalphaolefin based lubricating oil should be used. Certain ester based oils attack seals and varnish, and should not be used unless recommended by the manufacturer. Older engines have governors with lower nominal operating pressures (< 200 psi), for which a mineral oil based lubricating oil can also be used. The lubricating oil viscosity should be in the range: ISO VG 68 for oil sump temperatures ca. 60C to 75C ISO VG 100 for oil sump temperatures ca. 75C to 90C

The oil must be kept clean and an oil charge which shows distinct signs of discoloration should be replaced. Synthetic oils should be changed at least once a year and mineral oils at least every 2000 running hours. If the nominal operating pressure is very high (> 260 psi), as on all engines with 12 cylinders or more, then the synthetic oil should be changed at least every 6 months, or if the oil sump operating temperature exceeds 90C then more frequently. An oil of viscosity class SAE 30 or SAE 40 is suitable and usually the same oil can be used as in the engine. Turbocharger oil can also be used in the governor. In low temperature ambient conditions it may be necessary to use a multigrade oil (e.g. SAE 5W-40) to get a good control during start-up.
