Installation Read these instructions completely before you begin! Contact SUPERBOLT, INC. (412-279-1149) if you have any questions. NOTE: Air or electric power wrenches of appropriate size may be used for running up jackbolts. Attempt to tighten as consistently as possible, move the power wrenches frequently do not tighten all in once. Use a standard torque wrenches to verify final torque values. 1.) Make sure the threads of the main bolt/stud and the main thread of the tensioner are free of any dirt or chips. (Lubrication of main thread is recommended. This is for anti-seize purpose only and has no bearing on torque preload values.) 2.) Slide the hardened washer onto the stud/bolt first. 3.) Check the base of the tensioner(s) and verify that all jackbolt are flush with the bottom of the tensioner body. 4.) Spin the tensioner body down on the main thread of the stud/bolt and snug against the hardened washer. 5.) Determine the target jackbolt torque value for the desired preload, either from the installation sheet shipped with the product, catalog tables, or by calling SUPERBOLT, INC. (412-2791149). The jackbolt torque value stamped on the tensioner is a standard value for that part, and may not be appropriate for your specific application. Since jackbolt torque is directly proportional to the tension load, you can easily figure other values as required. (e.g.: preload = jackbolt torque, 605 of preload requires 60% of torque.) TORQUING SEQUENCE A.) Start by snugging the jackbolt to 105 of the target jackbolt torque value from step 5. This seats the main thread and eliminates clearances. A star pattern should be used for this initial tightening sequence. B.) For the remainder of the procedure, change to the circular pattern. Torque jackbolts [one round] to 1/3 of target torque. C.) Torque the jackbolts [one round] to 2/3 of target. D.) Finally, torque jackbolts to 1005 of target torque. Since bolts stretch, it may take several rounds of torquing until all jackbolts are fully equalized. This is especially evident for longer bolts or studs.
Removal
CAUTION: Removal Requires strict Procedures! Jackbolts must be unloaded gradually. If any jackbolt are fully unloaded prematurely, the remaining jackbolts must carry the entire load making them very hard to turn. In extreme cases, mushrooming of the tips can occur making removal difficult. The intent is to slowly release the preload force, and that can only be done by controlling the turning sequence of the jackbolts. DO not use air tools for loosening of jackbolt because they make it impossible to gradually unload the jackbolts.
Note: If you have corroded parts, use same procedure as for High Temperature Tensioner (service above 250F)
REUSING SUPERBOLT MULTI-JACKBOLT TENSIONER - Before reusing the tensioner, the jackbolts should be removed in the appropriate manner, the body and jackbolts cleaned and re-lubricated with SUPERBOLT approved lubricant to insure proper jackbolt torque vs. preload performance on reinstallation.
