Handpiece cleaning and sterilization:

The handpiece body, fiber locking cap, and collet are all autoclavable. These parts should be cleaned with warm soapy water, rinsed, bagged, and autoclaved after each procedure. The parts should be separated for cleaning and reassembled loosely for autoclaving.

Fiber cleaning and disinfection:

The fiber and spool remain inside the fiber cassette and are not autoclavable. To clean and disinfect, wipe the fiber using Birex, Cidex, Nolvasan or a comparable product that can disinfect the jacket. Dry the jacket using a clean 2 x 2 sponge or gauze pad prior to retracting the fiber into the cassette. When extending the fiber for use, repeat this procedure. Once stripped, cleaved, and initiated the fiber tip will reach temperatures of several hundred degrees centigrade. For sterile procedures, the laser should be operated at 8 watts for 60 seconds prior to inserting the fiber into the handpiece and again following handpiece assembly prior to beginning the procedure.
