Only God and the soulthis is to be truly a monk. But how can one attain to this? By any way that you like, so long as you do attain to it; for so long as a man has not reached this state, he is not yet a monk. But difficult though it is to become a true monk, do not be discouraged: the spirit of zeal will come and will disperse all your fears. This spirit is irresistible. It comes, is accepted by the heart, and effects great changes within. This is the origin of all true monastic life. It would be more accurate to say that no one makes himself a monkhe is made such by an outside force. There are quiet natures which are not suited to rigorous feats of self-denial. Comece retirando-se em solido na sua prpria casa e dedique-se, nestas horas de solido, a orar acima de tudo por uma coisa: Mostra-me o caminho que devo seguir (Sl. cxliii. 8.) Ore assim, no s meramente em palavras e pensamento, mas, tambm, desde seu corao. Para estes momentos de solido disponha certas horas todo dia, pois este o melhor caminho; ou, ainda, certos dias da semana. E ento, cumpra corretamente este tempo de solido buscando acima de tudo a iluminao e que o correto caminho lhe seja mostrado por Deus. A isto acrescente a prtica do jejum que afeta a carne: ser de bom auxlio orao. E durante este tempo, tente, como um experimento, fazer atos de renncia interna

 ora de uma coisa, ora de outra de modo a tornar-se indiferente a todas as coisas; e retire-se em secluso de modo tal que nada possa lhe atrair de volta. A meta levar a sua alma a um estado no qual ela anseia por escapar de seu modo de vida atual como um prisioneiro procura libertar-se de seus grilhes. TEFAN, O RECLUSO Seeking the will of God in solitude You know, of course, that your whole purpose at the moment is to change yourself inwardly. And so, corresponding to these inward changes and obeying the impulse that comes from them, external things must be changed as well. My advice to you in your present position is this. Begin retreating into solitude at your own home, and dedicate these hours of solitude to praying above all for one thing: 'Make known to me, O Lord, the way wherein I should walk' (Ps. cxliii. 8. B.C.P.) Pray thus not merely in words and thought, but also from your heart. For this time of solitude, set aside certain hours every day, which is the better way; or else certain days of the week. And then observe this time of solitude properly, seeking above all for enlightenment, and to be shown the right way by God. To this add the practice of fasting, which affects the flesh: it will be a good aid to prayer. And during this time try, by way of experiment, to make acts of inward renunciationnow of one thing, now anotherin order to become indifferent to everything; and retreat into seclusion in such a way that nothing can draw you back. The aim is to bring your soul to a state in which it longs to escape from its present way of life as a prisoner seeks to break loose from his fetters. si. Ir a igreja no interrompe sua solido, mas a intensifica e tambm lhe d fora para passar seu tempo em casa. De tempos em tempos voc, talvez, pudesse ficar recolhido dentro de casa por um ou dois dias esforando-se para estar com Deus todo o tempo. Mas em seu caso isto j acontece por si mesmo, assim no h necessidade de fazer planos para tornar-se um recluso. Quando a sua orao ganhar um nvel de estabilidade que sempre lhe mantenha face a face com Deus em seu corao, voc ter a secluso sem ser um recluso. Pois, o que realmente significa ser um recluso? Significa que sua mente, encerrada no corao, permanece diante de Deus em reverncia e no sente desejo de deixar o corao ou se ocupar com qualquer outra coisa. Busque por este tipo de recluso e no se preocupe em relao ao outro. Mesmo por detrs de portas fechadas pode-se perambular pelo mundo, ou permitir que o inteiro mundo invada o prprio quarto. TEFAN, O RECLUSO What it meant to be a recluse You say you would like to become a recluse. It is too soon for this; and there is no need. After all, you live alone, and your visitors are few and far between. Going to church does not interrupt your solitude but intensifies it, and gives you the strength to pass your time in prayer at home as well. From time to time you could perhaps stay indoors for a day or two, endeavouring to be with God all the time. But in your case this already happens of itself, so there is no need to make plans about becoming a recluse. When your prayer has gained such stability that it keeps you always face to face with God in your heart, you will have seclusion without being a recluse. For what does it really mean to be a recluse ? It means that your mind, enclosed in the heart, stands before God in reverence and feels no desire to leave the heart or to occupy itself with anything else. Seek this kind of seclusion and do not worry about the other. Even behind closed doors one can wander about the world, or let the whole world invade one's room. THEOPHAN THE RECLUSE

No se argumenta contra esta convico. Aqueles que verdadeiramente lutam para servir a Deus no visam obter mrito. Tudo com que eles se preocupam purificar a si mesmos das paixes, de todos os pensamentos e sentimentos apaixonados. Para este propsito a vida vivida junto aos outros mais adequada, porque ela nos prov com experincia prtica na luta contra as paixes e na superao delas. Estas vitrias atacam as paixes no peito e na cabea, e repetidas vitrias, rapidamente, matam as paixes por completo. Na solido, por outro lado, a luta ocorre apenas na mente, o que frequentemente mais fraco em seu efeito como o o impacto da asa de uma mosca. Esta a razo pela qual se leva mais tempo para matar as paixes na solido. Alm disso, em tal luta, praticamente sempre o caso de que as paixes no so plenamente destrudas, mas meramente foradas a ceder por um momento, at que o objeto da paixo seja novamente encontrado. E assim, algumas vezes acontece que a paixo repentinamente lampeje como um raio: neste caso, um homem que muito desfrutou de paz em relao s paixes, atravs no s da luta mental mas, tambm, da luta real; no ser abalado pelo repentino ataque. Esta a razo pela qual os homens de experincia na vida espiritual aconselham os outros a superar as paixes opondo-se contra elas de uma forma definida enquanto vivem em comunidade, e s mais tarde retiram-se para a solido. TEFAN, O RECLUSO War with passionsin community and in solitude You are assured, so you tell me, that there is more merit in striving to serve God in the hubbub of daily life than in working for salvation in solitude. Do not argue against this conviction. Those who truly strive to serve God do not aim at gaining merit. All they care about is to purify themselves from the passions, from all passionate thoughts and feelings. For this purpose life lived in common with others is more suitable, because it provides us with practical experience in struggling with the passions and overcoming them. These victories strike the passions in the chest and the head, and repeated victories quickly kill the passions completely. In solitude, on the other hand, the struggle goes on only in the mind, which is often as weak in its effect as the impact of a fly's wing. This is why it takes longer to kill the passions in solitude. Besides, in such a struggle it is practically always the case that the passions are not wholly killed but merely forced to subside for a time, until the object of passion is again encountered.

And so it sometimes happens that the passion suddenly flashes out like lightning: in that case a man who has long enjoyed peace from passions, through fighting them not only mentally but in actual fact, will not be shaken by their sudden attack. This is why men of experience in the spiritual life advise others to overcome the passions by battling against them in a definite form whilst living in community, and only later to retreat into solitude. TEFAN, O RECLUSO The true wilderness How should you order yourself inwardly so as to enjoy peace of soul? Secure for yourself inner solitude. But such solitude is not a mere vacuum nor can it be gained simply by creating complete emptiness in oneself. When you retreat into yourself, you should stand before the Lord, and remain in His presence, not letting the eyes of the mind turn away from the Lord. This is the true wildernessto stand face to face with the Lord. This state of standing before the Lord is something that supports and maintains itself. To be with the Lord is the aim of our existence, and when we are with Him we cannot fail to experience a feeling of well-being; this feeling naturally attracts our attention to itself, and through this, to the Lord from whom the feeling comes. TEFAN, O RECLUSO Old acquaintances It is good to withdraw from distractions under the protection of four walls, but it is even better to withdraw into solitude within oneself. The first without the second is nothing, whereas the last is of the utmost value even without the first. It is an excellent thing to go to church, but if you can accustom yourself to pray at home as if in church, such prayer at home is equally valuable. Just as a man sees another face to face, try thus to stand before the Lord, so that your soul is face to face with Him. This is something so natural that there should have been no need to mention it specially, for by its very nature the soul should strive always towards God. And the Lord is always near. There is no need to arrange an introduction between them for they are old acquaintances. THEOPHAN THE RECLUSE

Secluso externa tambm ser necessria, mas parece-me que ainda assim, voc faria bem em afastar-se para a solido apenas de tempos em tempos. TEFAN, O RECLUSO External and inward seclusion You wish to withdraw into seclusion. When the right time comes it will be possible. But first make the necessary preparation. Speaking generally, it seems to me that complete isolation is not good for you, but it is all right for you to withdraw into seclusion from time to time. There is no need for you to seek more than that. When the small flame is kindled in the heart, and you begin to dwell in the heart with your attention, you already possess true inner seclusion. Mas talvez Ele esteja lhe ensinando isto: no esto as tentaes internas, ou os encargos e os infortnios externos, aproximando-se para lhe afrontar? Esse o pensamento de S. Isaac. Ele diz que toda vez que acontea de voc sentir uma ao especial da graa, deve-se olhar bem para todos os lados, com receio de que alguma calamidade possa lhe suceder, derrubando-lhe. Pois os ataques da ostentao so mais propensos a lhe assaltar do que aqueles das adversidades aflitivas. Neste caso, recolha de sua antiga vida tudo aquilo que sua conscincia lhe probe de orar, e assim, abafe os pensamentos que lhe surjam, do mesmo modo que se abafa um fogo com terra, para prevenir que um grande incndio surja de uma pequena chama. Autoorgulho e auto-estima so acompanhados por pensamentos e movimentos pecaminosos e outras faltas tais que esto longe de serem desprezveis. Possa o Senhor salvar-lhe de todas elas!

O Senhor aprova seu desejo por solido, mas no indica o momento. Voc deve esperar por indicaes precisas: at que elas sejam dadas, mantenha o silncio interno, e continue a fazer tudo que possa para cuidar do seu convento apropriadamente. Como se pode manter a concentrao interna entre cuidados externos? Faa seu trabalho com zelo e ateno, ininterruptamente e sem pressa. Cada pea de trabalho que se tenha de fazer, aceite-a como tendo sido dada pelo Prprio Senhor, e faa-a como tal. Seus pensamentos, ento, estaro com o Senhor. Voc pode adquirir este hbito com a ajuda de Deus. TEFAN, O RECLUSO Preserving inner concentration among outward cares You were granted a great favour from the Lord. Through it He is expressing His approval of your past labours and encouraging you to undertake greater labours still. But maybe He is also teaching you this: are not inner temptations, or external sorrows and burdens, approaching to face you? Such is the thought of St. Isaac. He says that whenever you happen to feel a special action of grace, you should look well on all sides, lest any calamity should befall you and cast you down. But attacks of boasting are more likely to assail you than sorrowful misfortunes. In that case recollect from your former life all that your conscience forbids you to praise, and thus damp down the thoughts that arise within you, just as one sometimes damps a fire down with earth, in order to prevent a big blaze being born from a small flame. Self-praise and self-esteem are followed by sinful thoughts and sinful movements, and other such failings which are far from negligible. May the Lord save you from them all! The Lord approves your desire for solitude, but does not indicate the time. You must wait for precise indications: until they are given, keep inner silence, and continue to do all you can to look after your convent properly. How can you keep inner concentration amongst outward cares ? Do your work with zeal and attention, unremittingly and without haste. Every piece of work which you have to do, accept as given you by God Himself, and do it as such. Your thoughts will then be with the Lord. You can acquire this habit with God's help. THEOPHAN THE RECLUSE

Voc ter algo melhor do que o isolamento externo ao retirar-se para dentro de si deste modo, fazendo assim, que seja impossvel que qualquer turbulncia externa o distraia. Ore para que isso lhe possa ser concedido. TEFAN, O RECLUSO Retreat within yourself You thirst for a definite seclusion. It would be better to wait. External seclusion will come of itself once inner seclusion is established. God will arrange about that. Yet do not forget that you can be alone amid the noise of the world; and equally you can be surrounded by the hubbub of the world whilst withdrawn in your cell. You will have something better than external seclusion if you retreat in this way within yourself, thus making it impossible for any external turmoil to distract you.
