MEMO
From the desk of Mr Mark Wong

April 20, 2000 To: Mr Eddie Fok and Joey Lee Wonderful news! The Green Education Fund has given St Michaels a grant of $10,000 to buy plants for the school. You can read about the Fund in the information leaflet I have included with this memo. I would like the two of you to help me choose suitable plants and decide where to put them in the school. I would like to buy all the plants and have them ready for the school Open Day on June 15. Could you work together to order the plants from the Greenwell Plant Company? They seem to be quite good. We have enough money to get a large plant for every classroom. We can also buy plants for the reception area, the offices and the library. The library and most of the offices are not very big, so we will only get small plants for them. I would like a large plant in my office and a large one for the reception area. Both of these rooms are quite dark, so you must choose plants that do not need much sunlight. Joey, would you please write a notice to go in each classroom to tell students how to take care of the plants? Also, write a letter to Mr T.K. Smith, Education Director of the Green Education Fund, about what we have done. Remember to thank him for the grant of $10,000. And, please invite Mr Smith to come to our school Open Day. Thanks very much!!

M. Wong

Information leaflet about the Green Education Fund

The Green Education Fund

The Green Education Fund was set up in 1998 by a group of teachers and other professionals to try and make schools more pleasant places for students to work in. The purpose of the Fund is to encourage students to take an interest in a green school environment and to look after plants. The fund makes grants to schools to buy plants to make the school environment more attractive. Students must learn to look after the plants themselves and encourage other students in the school to do the same. After a grant of money has been made to a school, a short letter should be written by the School to the Green Education Fund. This letter should give the following information: The way the money has been spent What has been done to inform students about how to take care of plants
For more information contact: Mr T. K. Smith, Education Director The Green Education Fund 15th Floor, Wong Chai House 47 Kings Road Wan Chai

Information sheet about how to care for plants Care of indoor plants
There are three things which indoor plants need: Water It is possible to kill plants by giving them too much water, so it is best to water plants well only once a week, rather than every day. Plants should be watered in the evening, not in the hottest part of the day. You should feel the soil with your finger every day to make sure it is not too dry. Plants enjoy a spray of clean water all over the leaves at least once a month and this should be done in the morning or evening, not in the hottest part of the day. The dish under the plant pot sometimes fills up with water and should be checked and emptied each week. Sunlight Plants should be placed in a spot where they get enough sunlight to keep them healthy. It is a good idea to turn the plant round once a week so that the leaves on the other side have a chance to get more light. Care It is a good idea to clean the leaves with a soft damp cloth at least once a month to remove dirt and dust. When you clean the leaves each month, look out for any insects or disease on the leaves so that you can use a special spray to get rid of them if necessary. It is best to open a window near your plants for an hour each day. Plants like air! You can also buy a liquid plant food to keep plants healthy. This food can be used once a month by adding a little to the plants water. 2000-CE-ENG LANG A3-DF3
