Staff Writer
MANISTEE The
transition from elementary
school to middle school is a
big step for many children,
and it often tests their char-
acter and team-building
skills.
For years, the staff
at Kennedy Elementary
Schools has been address-
ing those needs by taking
the students on the annual
Winter Whiteout program.
It consists of traveling to the
Central Lake Bible Camp in
Tustin where the students
stay overnight to work on
improving those skills.
They accomplish it by a
series of fun activities mixed
around some serious subject
matter. What makes it work
so well is they take the stu-
dents out of the classroom
and into a more relaxed
atmosphere.
This was the seventh
year that we have doing
it, said Kennedy teacher
Matt Phillips. The Winter
Whiteout is a real unique
experience for us, and it has
really helped the students.
We started doing it when
they first moved the sixth
grade to the middle school.
There wasnt a sixth grade
program so they created this
for us. What it does is give
the kids the opportunity to
learn something about each
other.
The Kennedy teacher
pointed out that the Central
Lake Bible Camp is the
perfect location for this
program. They really cater
to the children in the sixth
grade age level.
They are great hosts and
do a great job, Phillips said.
Students picked up quite
a few things they didnt
know about each other.
For Chloe Pepera it was the
opportunity to bond with
some members of her class
that she didnt know very
well.
I learned that everyone
is different, but we all can
connect in some sort of

during the Winter Whiteout this year was winter survival skills such as building

Prescription products can protect your dog from tape-
worm infestation.
NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
Pet owners now have an
easy way to protect their
pets from the unpleasant
experience of a tapeworm
infestation.
How do you know if
your dog has tapeworms?
Traditional testing meth
ods use a stool sample
(feces) to detect many
parasites, including hook
worms and roundworms.
But if your dog has tape
worms, this test will often
be negative. In most cases,
the diagnosis is made when
you see these segments
crawling either on the fresh
stool sample or on your
dogs rear end.
But what do they look
like? Well, bits of tape
worms are most commonly
compared to cucumber
seeds or grains of rice, just
wigglier. When they dry
out, the tapeworm seg
ments become hard and
yellowish in color (think
sesame seeds) and may
stick to the hair, fur or
even your pillow.
New research from
Auburn University shows
that tapeworm infections
in dogs may be much more
widespread than previously
recognized. The new test
ing method indicated that
45 percent of over 1,000
pet dogs tested positive.
Earlier studies placed that
average at 1 percent preva
lence of tapeworms found
in dogs.
Most tapeworm infec
tions occur when your dog
eats a flea or small mam
mal that carries an early
stage of the worm. They are
not directly transmittable
to you (unless you eat fleas
and small mammals), and
most tapeworm species
cause minimal health prob
lems, with a few excep
tions.
Since winter has been
mild across the country,
we can expect to see an
increase in parasites, with
fleas and wild animals
bringing in a variety of
problems, states Dr. Heidi
Lobprise. Even when you
are providing flea control
on your pet, its difficult to
control every pest in the
environment, so you need
to be aware that diseases
such as tapeworms can still
be transmitted.
How can you protect
your dog? Fortunately,
with a little knowledge
and one easy step, you
can keep heartworms,
tapeworms and other
worms from rearing their
ugly heads. Prescription
products available from
your local veterinarian like
IVERHART MAX (ivermec
tin/pyrantel pamoate/prazi
quantel) Chewable Tablets
can help. IVERHART MAX
Chewable Tablets are a
oncemonthly preventa
tive that can help treat and
control roundworms, hook
worms and tapeworms.

erinary clinic and you can

PRECIS SYNDICATE
What is FPIES?
FPIES is Food Protein
Induced Enterocolitis
Syndrome. It is commonly
pronounced F-Pies and is
a severe inflammation and
reaction in the stomach and
intestines. FPIES reactions
often show up in the first
weeks or months of life or
at an older age for an exclu-
sively breast-fed child.
Cows milk and soy
products are the most com-
mon FPIES triggers, but
many foods can cause an
FPIES reaction, such as
cereal grains, vegetables
and chicken. Often confused
with food allergies, since
the reaction occurs only in
the stomach and intestines
with other organs being
unaffected, it is a protein
intolerance. This makes
diagnosis difficult and often
frustrating.
A child with FPIES may
experience what appears to
be a horrible stomach bug
but the bug only starts a
couple of hours after the
offending food is given.
Some children experience
mild symptoms, while
others have such severe
vomiting and diarrhea that
they can become seriously
dehydrated and go into
shock, which can result in
seizures, shallow breathing
and clammy skin.
FPIES reactions almost
always start around two
hours after eating the intol-
erable food and result in
vomiting, commonly fol-
lowed by diarrhea, which
can last up to several days.
If your child is experiencing
severe symptoms of FPIES
or shock, immediately call
911 first, as well as your
childs physician.
Diagnosis
It is common for FPIES
to go undiagnosed for weeks
to months, and the symp-
toms are often blamed on
the stomach flu. FPIES is
a newly recognized disease
in the medical community,
and unlike with common
food allergies, standard
tests are routinely negative
in FPIES patients.
Keeping a food journal
may be helpful in identify-
ing food triggers if you think
your child has FPIES, as
diagnosis typically occurs
based on food reaction his-
tory and physical examina-
tion.
FPIES is often an
underdiagnosed and mis-
understood disorder. Due
to limited research and a
growing need for global
awareness of this syndrome,
many physicians struggle
to accurately diagnose
and treat FPIES patients.
Physicians often confuse
FPIES reactions with the
flu or a common stomach
virus, said Fallon Schultz,
founder, International
Association for Food
Protein Enterocolitis.
Treatment
Treating FPIES varies
depending on the child; for
some, treatment is avoiding
the foods that cause vomit-
ing and stomach pain.
However, if your baby
NAPSI Photo
Children with FPIES can
be helped.
FPIES: What is it and
could your child have it?
is diagnosed with FPIES,
we recommend eliminat-
ing those specific infant
formulas and food proteins
from his diet and switching
to an amino acid elemen-
tal formula like Neocate.
Switching to a special for-
mula like Neocate will help
ensure that your baby gets
the nutrients and calories
he or she needs to grow
and thrive, says Steven
Yannicelli, Ph.D., R.D., vice
president of medical and
scientific affairs for Nutricia
North America.
Many children outgrow
FPIES by age 3 but this can
vary based on how severe
their symptoms are and
which foods they react to.
To determine if your child
has outgrown FPIES, it is
important to work with your
doctor and evaluate it on a
food-by-food basis.

whiteout: From Page 1
way, Pepera said. We all hung
out a lot and got to talk with each
other. We also do some different
activities and overcome our fears
of each other by doing fun things
together.
For Shane Harrigan, it was a
chance to learn about teamwork.
He gained the ability to work
together with others in solving a
challenge.
I learned teamwork from all
the activities that we did during
our stay, Harrigan said. We had
to figure out how to cross a (imagi-
nary) river with just boards using
teamwork. In the end, the other
team helped us with their boards
to get across so we all worked
together on it.
Mayan Liston used the experi-
ence to develop some new friend-
ships during the trip. She spent
time with classmates she hadnt
hung out with before the Whiteout
experience.
It was the chance to make
friends with people you thought
you would never hang out with by
doing activities, Liston said. We
did orienting, identifying trees and
other things.
Teamwork was the number one
priority for the students through-
out the stay at the camp. Many
projects focused on the simple task
of working together on a project.
In building the fires, we all
had to work together to put the
sticks in the right place, make the
fire and then we made smores
afterwards, Sarah Sheathelm.
The students also had the
opportunity to take part in many
fun activities like tubing, skiing,
broom ball and ga ga ball.
For some students, it was the
first time they were able to try some
of these things. Their confidence
grew as they learned how easy it was
to accomplish.
I went cross country skiing
and had no idea how to do it, Billie
Gajewski said. I fell a bunch of
times, but everyone helped me up
and it was fun.
There also was an educational
component to the trip as the stu-
dents also were given cold weather
survival skills. They were taught how
to stay warm in sub-zero tempera-
tures and the proper way to build
a bonfire. It is important skills to
learn in the event one of them ever
becomes stranded in the woods.
The week before leaving for
Whiteout we learned survival skills
like how to avoid hypothermia,
Carly Schmeling said. When we
went out there we read a story
about someone who had hypother-
mia and froze to death. We also
learned how to use a compass to
find our way out.
The students felt the experience
not only allowed them to grow as a
person, but that it also gave them
some valuable knowledge about
wilderness survival in the cold. It
also instilled in them a confidence
of being able to handle it.
All the things they taught us,
like how to build a fire, I didnt
think I was going to be able to do
it, said Sharon Tetzlaff.
They even had a literal taste
of adventure at one point. In Mr.
Smiths class they had the chance
to eat some fried crickets.
With the mild winter that took
place in Michigan this year, some
students were concerned that
Winter Whiteout might not be
all that white this year. However,
much to their surprise the Central
Lake Bible Camp had about a foot
of snow when they arrived at it.
We were a little concerned
when the first groups went that
there wasnt going to be enough
snow, Phillips said. But it held
on and there was enough on the
ground to allow for the outdoor
activities.
In the past we have had 17
below zero and two or three feet
of snow, so we had to do some
adjustment this year.
The Kennedy Elementary teach-
ers were proud of what they saw
from their students on the trip.
It was very satisfying to see
some of the strengths come out
on the students that you nor-
mally dont see in the classroom,
Phillips said. Some of the kids
who are kind of reserved become
leaders and some became friends
that werent friends before.
Students also were given an
informational talk on wildlife from
Ed Shaw of the Carl T. Johnson
Hunting and Fishing Museum at
Mitchell State Park in Cadillac.
He is a park interpreter for the
Department of Natural Resources
and he presented a lesson on black
bears, Phillips said. He told them
about the challenges bears face
and the things they do to survive in
the wild.
Winter Whiteout once again
proved to be an opportunity for
students to grow both education-
ally and as a person. Students raise
money for the trip every year and
school officials hope to keep it
going well into the future.
Courtesy Photo
Students also had plenty of fun playing broom ball.
