But what about...

Embodied energy? Product lifecycle? Materiality? Construction sequence? What about all the aspects of the element that deal with time and not just space? While the RainRoof started to address some metrics of real application (structural and water weight), it focused on adaptability of the element to a wide range of contexts without considering well enough how the element would actually be used in those contexts. ShadeStructure draws on experience gained from the RainRoof to produce a more lightweight, inexpensive canopy structure that is limited by parameters of constructability.

All pieces of the new element use standard dimensional lumber or standard plywood sheets.

8 ft THREE-HINGED ARCHES

The pieces lock together with circular inserts. Optionally, fabric can be stretched across the top for additional shading, or to direct water into tubes that run through the center of the assembled fins.

ShadeStructure: Components
Fins + Louvers The fins are cut from one 4x8 plywood sheet, while the louvers use standard dimensional lumber. The sizes and lengths of the louvers can be changed, as can certain aspects of the fins. The entire assembly is easy to manufacture, assemble, and dis-assemble; creates shade; and contributes to an interesting outdoor environment. Assemblies of fins plus louvers make up the components that are then arrayed on varying grid patterns to achieve a complete shading system.

Curvature

Louvers: adjust in thickness, angle, and length; can be turned on and off

Fin: adjusts in width, length, and degree of curvature

Width Length

Rotation occurs within the UDF - 5 different UDFs are used

ShadeStructure: Next Steps: Grid Development

The goal is to deploy the grouped fin assemblies in grids that adapt to the number of fins chosen - different patterns are required for the different assemblies.
