Anees Shaik Profile Essay February 18, 2011 English 121-035

The everyday life of a Dentist is more interesting than I thought it would be when I went to interview Dr. Rowan at his practice. The preconception of dentists using hammers, screws, and the like to remove teeth is quite funny when you actually enter the clinic. As I entered the clinic, I smelled a fragrant room freshener that makes you relaxed when you wait in the lounge room. The lounge room consisted of six chairs with a table in front of them that had some magazines (TIMES, Sports Illustrated) spread on its top that the visitors can read while they wait to be called upon. The lounge room was pretty small with the reception desk blending into the surroundings yet capturing the visitor is as they come in. Moreover, next to the reception is the door that takes you to the operating section of the clinic. As I entered the operating room, I saw a narrow corridor with some openings along the way where the operating rooms are situated. The color of the walls in the corridor reminds me of the light-green shade that most hospitals seem to have in books that I have read. The sizes of the operating rooms seemed to vary and when I asked about this: The bigger rooms are for patients that have bigger dental problems than most and thus, require more equipment than we use on other patients. Also, need more room to do the huge procedures. The dcor of the actual operating rooms seemed to differ in small things that seem to affect the whole look of the room. In one room, there is a wallpaper of Scooby-doo skating clumsily yet looking happy. I believe its kids that get their teeth checked up, or taken out. I guess it might distract them from

the fear that they might have. In another room, there is a portrait of various Hollywood actors sitting on a constructing beam overlooking a city (New York) having lunch. Moreover, in another, there is a vase in the corner with flowers. Overall, there are small things here and there that differentiate one operating room from another belaying the bland atmosphere the corridor gave off. When I asked what a usual business day was like for the doctor in the clinic, I was told that mostly the patients that come on a business day are those for teeth ache, braces, and teeth cleaning. In addition, sometimes, big cases like root canal. The patients that come for their monthly teeth cleaning get them done by the nurses and he checks off on their work in the end. He told me that only operate on big cases like deep cleaning, root canal, and replacement. (This can cost from $5000 to $8000) When I asked for more information about the clinic, he mentioned that he was the only doctor and the rest were that work in shifts that are comfortable to them. They, also, are graded on their performance, which can change the types of work (or operations) that they do in the clinic. This can also affect their salary which can grow from 1500/month to around 3000/month. As I was concluding my interview, he showed me his private office where he takes when he usually does not have anything to do. There were some diagrams of teeth and the human body, which he shows to patients that want information on them. The visit to the clinic has helped me learn the intricate workings of a dental clinic.
