Aim: To determine the vitamin C content in different fruit juice Problem statement: Does lemon juice contain more

vitamin C than papaya juice? Hypothesis: Papaya juice contains more vitamin C than lemon juice. Variables: Manipulated: Types of fruit Responding: Volume of fruit juice needed to decolorize the 1 ml DCPIP solution 1% of vitamin C Fixed: Volume of DCPIP solution Material: 0.1 % ascorbic acid solution, DCPIP solution, freshly prepared fruit juice and papaya juice Apparatus: specimen tubes, a syringe(1 ml), syringes (5 ml) with needles, beakers (50 ml), gauze cloth, knife and mortar. Technique: To record the volume of fruit juice needed to decolorize the 1ml DCPIP using a scaled syringe. Procedure: 1. Four specimen tubes are labeled as ascorbic acid, lemon juice, papaya juice and pineapple juice. 2. 1ml of DCPIP solution is placed in each specimen tube. 3. A syringe is filled with 5 ml of ascorbic solution. 4. The needle of the syringe is immersed in the DCPIP solution 5. The ascorbic solution is added drop by drop to the DCPIP solution and the tube is shaken slowly. 6. The amount of ascorbic solution use to decolorize the DCPIP solution is recorded. 7. Steps 2 to 6 are repeated using lemon juice, papaya juice and pineapple juice. 8. The percentage and the concentration of the vitamin C in the fruit juices are calculated. 9. The data collected is recorded in a table.

Calculation Percentage of vitamin C= Volume of 0.1 % ascorbic solution x 0.1 Volume of fruit juice Concentration of vitamin C= Volume of 0.1 % ascorbic acid solution Volume of fruit juice (a) Percentage of vitamin C in lemon juice = 1/5 x 0.1 = 0.02 Concentration on vitamin C in lemon juice= 1/5 = 0.2 (b) Percentage of vitamin C in pineapple juice= 1/1.6 x 0.1 = 0.0625 Concentration of vitamin C in pineapple juice= 1/1.6 = 0.625 (c) Percentage of vitamin C in papaya juice= 1/ 1.8 x 0.1 =0.056 Concentration of vitamin C in papaya juice= 1/1.8 = 0.56

Discussion: 1. The greater the volume of fruit juice needed to decolorize the DCPIP solution, the lower the content of vitamin C in the fruit juice. 2. The volume of lemon juice used to decolorize 1 ml DCPIP solution is ml, pineapple juice ml. Conclusion: Papaya juice contains more vitamin C than lemon juice. The hypothesis is accepted.
