There is that great story of a conversion in Acts 8. We often read it for the elements of faith in action as a textbook case for teaching others. It is also a great story of inquiry, emotion, learning, and joyous new beginnings. Imagine being that government official from Ethiopia. He had been to the center of faith, as he knew it. He had been to Jerusalem to worship. Making the journey from Ethiopia to Judea and back again (by way of chariot) gave him a lot of time to contemplate what he was doing. Perhaps he was a lot like some of us. As he had been to worship, he was in a religious frame of mind. He was, after all, reading from the scriptures as he traveled. As he was joined by a man he had never met, Philip, their discussion gave him the opportunity to pose a question from the text. Philip used the opportunity to teach this inquiring man. He taught about Jesus. In the progression of their study, the Ethiopian asked Philip about baptism. There was water near, and upon the confession of faith in Christ, Philip and that Ethiopian went down into that water, and the Ethiopian was immersed (baptized). Now, that is a great story. Just dont stop reading at that point. As Paul Harvey would say, And now, the rest of the story. Three things followed. 1. They came up out of the water. They were in process. You dont stay in the water. Baptism is faith in motion. 2. Philip was separated from him. Responsibility was now on his own shoulders. 3. He went on his way rejoicing. He didnt just pick up his journey. He had a new attitude and a reason to celebrate. He did. Life and faith move forward. Get up and out of the water. Russ
