ecc2012 Welcome

Cluster excellence is a prerequisite for the development of world-class competitive clusters in Europe. Recent efforts conducted at EU level have achieved outstanding results so far. This Conference will show the way forward: how to pursue this work in the future so that European clusters become key drivers of EU competitiveness, industrial change and SME internationalisation. The creation of the new industrial value chains is vital in giving Europe and Europeans the tools to face the current economic crisis.

Clusters are powerful instruments in the innovation policy and help to increase the competitiveness of our companies, especially SMEs. Austria has been an early mover in cluster policies within Europe regional initiatives already started in the 1990s. At the moment, we count about 50 clusters in economic and technological fields like mobility, materials, life sciences, ICT and eco-innovation.

mr. antti peltomki

Deputy Director-General Directorate-General Enterprise and Industry

dr. reinhold mitterlehner

Austrian Federal Minister of Economy, Family and Youth

The Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth strongly supports the cooperation between academia and business. There are various funding programmes fostering the technology and knowledge transfer from research to industry, for example COMET (Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies), COIN (Cooperation and Innovation) or the Programme Young Innovative Technology oriented Enterprises (JITU). Furthermore there is a specific funding-line for clusters to support their internationalisation. In 2008 the Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth founded the National Cluster Platform Austria which has been growing permanently up to now, representing regional cluster managers from core macro-clusters, representatives from the regional and federal government as well as from the scientific community. This initiative coordinates the policies of the regional clusters and speaks with one voice at the European level. Thus the National Cluster Platform Austria serves as the central information and cooperation platform for all cluster stakeholders at the national and regional level. We are delighted that the European Cluster Conference 2012 takes place in Austria because the strategic steps towards a future cluster policy are being defined now. The stimulative role of clusters in boosting innovation and growth will be further strengthend in the next EU funding period 2014 2020 and is addressed in many policy fields like regional development, research & innovation and industrial competitiveness. Austria will be a strong and active partner in all cluster activities of the European Union.
