Outcomes/Objectives: What will the students know/be able to do as a result of this lesson?
Students will be able to........ -Students will understand the characteristics and risks of cyber bullying, and learn strategies to deal with it. -Students will investigate individual situations dealing with cyber bullying and propose appropriate ways the involved characters could have dealt with the situation at hand.

Teacher Goals:

What strategies will you work on as a teacher?

-Provide wait-time, give students the time to process my question and think of an answer before calling on someone -Allow students to make connections and share stories when possible-remember that it is important for students to feel like this is a personal lesson and not just academic -Use personal connections to model for students the prevalence of cyber-bullying and ways to be responsible online

Materials:
For students: (handouts, previous assignments, tests, etc.) -Cyber Bullying Situations (1 situation per group of 3 kids) -Dealing with Cyber Bullying Worksheet -Post-It Note For teacher: (lecture notes, answer keys, overheads, video, lists of questions, etc.) -Bullying Statistics Sheet with notes -Be Part of the Solution Worksheet

Introduction:

How are you going to get the students to recall yesterdays lesson and how it relates to what you are doing today? How will you capture student attention?

Introduction Time Frame 10 min

Introduction Activity Description -The teacher will tell students that today they will begin a new advisory unit on Bullying. The teacher will emphasize that this unit is essential because bullying is a widespread problem in American middle schools. The teacher will use the document camera to show students the Bullying Statistics from the Make beats not beat downs website. The teacher will ask for some initial reactions and ask students to make any connections they may have.

5 min

-The teacher will then ask students to think of a definition of cyber-bullying, then the class will work together to create one cohesive definition of the word and one student will write it on the board for reference throughout the class.

Instruction:

Identify checkpoints for understanding throughout your lesson by placing a check mark next to the appropriate activity or question.

Instruction Time Frame 5 min

Instruction Activity Description -The teacher will pass out one post-it note to each student. The students should write on the post-it the answer to the following question: *What are some pros and cons of electronic socializing? (Facebook, texting, twitter, formspring, etc.) -The students will then share their responses to the question and the teacher will record the answers on the whiteboard and add the following points if needed: *E-Socializing allows us to connect with people we may have lost touch with *E-Socializing makes talking and communicating easier *E-Socializing creates situations in which someones personal information could be compromised *E-Socializing can mask true identity which could put some people in danger *E-Socializing could allow bullies a way to be disrespectful and hurtful without having to do it in person -The teacher will then split students up into groups of three. Each group will be given one of the scenarios from the Cyber Bullying Situations handout.

10 min

10 min

-Groups will be given time to collaborate and fill out the Dealing with Cyber Bullying worksheet. During this time the teacher will circulate the room to check in with each group and get an idea of what they are suggesting for their character. -When the groups have finished filling out the worksheet, the teacher will give groups a chance to share their situation and suggestions. They can also share what they think one of the characters could have done differently and any connections they may have to the situation.

5 min

Closure:

How will you tie the lesson together and reemphasize the concepts presented? How will you know if your students get it by the end of your lesson?

Closure Time Frame 15 min

Closure Activity Description -The teacher will then hold a discussion with students about the topics addressed on the Be Part of the Solution handout. The teacher will begin by stating the bolded headings and ask students to provide examples and connections to support them. -The teacher will then explain that everything we do on the internet has to be thought about before its done to assure that we are being safe and respectful. The teacher will then tie this lesson about cyber-bullying into the greater unit about bullying and explain that in all of these situations one of the most powerful players are those that watch or see them occur. They have the power to report and still stay isolated from the situation. The teacher will conclude by introducing the concept of Sexual Harassment and tell students that it will be the topic of instruction for next week.

Avoiding Cyber Bullying
1. Don't give out personal information This includes your name, phone number, address, email address, the name of your school, names of family members, pictures of yourself and so on. Never tell anyone your passwords or personal identification numbers (PINs)

2. Pause and think twice before you send messages Think about how you cant get the message back once youve sent it. Ask yourself these questions: - Could the message make you vulnerable to bullying because it is very person, potentially embarrassing or revealing? - Could the message get you in trouble if an adult saw it? - How might other people feel when they read this message? Realize that anything you send out electronically could potentially be sent to everyone you know and many more people you dont know.

3. Avoid saying anything in an electronic message that you wouldnt say to someones face.

4. Do not forward gossip or hurtful or threatening messages.
