Methodology
EstablishmentofMission Theelectricalengineeringtechnologyindustry,whichincludesallaspectsofelectricalpowersystems,electricaldrives, electronics,computersystems,communications,etc.hasalwaystakennotonlyanationalbutaninternational viewpoint.UnitedStateshavemadethispossiblethroughstatemarkets,likethestateofNorthCarolina,andthen servicingthewiderglobalmarketforgreatersatisfactionandreward. Oneoftherolesoftheengineeringcommunityistoprovidethefacilitiestoeducatethosechoosingtheprofession. Theseyoungengineersandtechnicianscanthenprovidesystemswhichoursocietywantstomakelifeeasier,ortobe moreproductiveandmoresatisfying.TheexcellenceofUSeducationalsystemsanditstechnicalprowessare recognizedworldwide.Inordertomaintainthistechnologicaledgepropereducationarerequiredforthoseneedingto runandmaintaintodaystechnologicalsocieties. Electricalengineeringtechnologyinallitsformsisbothessentialforthefutureandrewardingforthoseinvolved. Opportunitiesaboundstatewideandnationwideforthoseinterestedingettinginvolved,andthebroadrangeof activitiesensurepersonalsatisfaction.SoutheasternCommunityCollege,throughitselectricalengineeringtechnology program,hassetouttotakealongsteptoserviceColumbusandsurroundingcountiesandtosatisfytheir technologicalneeds.Electricalengineeringtechnologyprogramhasalsobecomeabridgebetweentechnical opportunitiesinthisruralcountiesandopportunitiesinlargercitieswherelatesttechnologyismoredominant. Theelectricalengineeringfacultydevelopedthemissionstatementtoaddressthisneed. EstablishmentofCommitments/Measures Todetermineappropriatelearningoutcomesfortheprogram,interviewswereconductedorcommunicationsfor feedbackswereestablishedwithindividualsfromthefollowinggroups:ProgressEnergy,EbtronInc,RemoteData Systems,NorthCarolinaStateUniversity,UniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte,InternationalPaper,Brunswick ElectricCooperation,SmithfieldHamProcessingPlant,AshleyElectric,WhitevilleCitySchools.Thesecontactsresulted inthefollowinginformationimpactingthecreationofprogramoutcomes. ProgressEnergy Studentsneedmainareasoffocusinthisprogram:Understandingofbasiclawsofelectricityandelectric circuits,competenceinbasicladderdiagramprogrammingwithPLC,understandingofprinciplesofmotors, understandingandskillsinmicroprocessors,andcompetenceinPCoperations.

ThesecondaryimportanceforProgressEnergyincludes:Understandingelectricpowersystems,skillsin residentialandcommercialelectricalwiring,skillsincomputeraideddesign,andexpertiseinPC hardware/software. CurrentlySCCgraduatesareemployedatProgressEnergyandtherearealwayspositionsopenforcommunity collegegraduates.

EbtronInc. Themainareasstudentsneedfocusinthisprogram:Understandingofbasiclawsofelectricityandelectric circuits,andcompetenceinPCoperations. ThesecondaryimportanceforEbtronIncare:Understandingofbasicelectronics,skillsinAutoCADor computeraideddrafting,understandingofmicroprocessorsandskillsinmicroprocessorinterfacing,skillsinPC hardware/softwareinstallationandtroubleshooting. CurrentlythereisnoSCCgraduatesatEbtronInc,buttheyplanonhiringcollegegraduateswithinayear. RemoteDataSystems TobeemployedbyRemoteDataSystems,themainareasourgraduatesshouldfocusonareBasicElectricity, Electronics,andhandsonexperiencesinelectricalmeasurementsandcircuitbuilding.Theyalsohire employeeswithexperienceinmicroprocessorsandpersonalcomputerhardware/software. Thereare1or2SCCgraduatesarecurrentlyemployedbyRemoteDataSystems. NorthCarolinaStateUniversity AcomparisonismadebetweenengineeringsoftwareusedinelectricalengineeringdepartmentatNCState andinelectricalengineeringtechnologyprogramatSCC.TheoutcomeofthecomparisonshowsbothNCState andSCCusePSpicesoftwareforelectricityandsimulationclasses.BothprogramsuseAssemblyLanguagefor microprocessorclasses. Thecomparisonalsorevealedafewdifferences,themicroprocessorsusedatSCCareMC68HC11andPIC,but LC3simulatorareusedatNCState.OurstudentslearntouseonlyWindowsoperatingsystem,whereasNC StatestudentsuseWindows,Linux,andUnixoperatingsystems. ClanguageisrequiredbyNCStatealongwithJAVAprogramminglanguage.Eventhoughnoprogramming languageisrequiredbyEETprogramatSCC,itusesCLanguagetoprogrammicroprocessorsinclass. Fortunately,aJAVAprogrammingcourseisalsoofferedbyITprogramatSCC. OnlysoftwarethatistotallyabsentfromEETprogramatSCCbutusedbyNCStateisMatlab. UniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte Acomparisonismadebetweenengineeringsoftwareusedinelectricalengineeringtechnologydepartmentat UNCCandinelectricalengineeringtechnologyprogramatSCC.Theoutcomeofthecomparisonshowsboth NCStateandSCCusePSpiceandElectronicWorkbenchsoftwareforelectricityandsimulationclasses.Both programsuseAssemblyLanguageandClanguageformicroprocessorclasses. Thecomparisonalsorevealedafewdifferences,themicroprocessorsusedatSCCareMC68HC11andPIC,but UNCCusesARMSandAVRmicroprocessors.OurstudentsaswellasUNCCengineeringtechnologystudents useWindowsoperatingsystemforlabsandvariousclassworks. CandJAVAprogramminglanguagesareacceptedbyEETdepartmentofUNCC.Eventhoughnoprogramming languageisrequiredbyEETprogramatSCC,itusesCLanguagetoprogrammicroprocessorsinclass. Fortunately,aJAVAprogrammingcourseisalsoofferedbyITprogramatSCC. NorthCarolinaCommunityCollegeSystem(NCCCS) TheNCCCShascourserequirementsthatmustbeincludedintheelectricalengineeringtechnologyprogram. Programoutcomescorrelatewiththedescriptionofprogramcourses.

ColumbusCountySchools EarlycollegeprogramatSCCenablesustomakecontactsandcommunicatewithlocalhighschools,highschool studentcounselorsandpotentialstudentsforthisEETprogram. ABET AlthoughEETprogramatSCCwillnotapplyforABETaccreditationatthistime,closelyfollowingABETstandards bythisprogramwillenhancequalityofeducationinEETaswellasproduceskilledandproperlytrained graduateswhowouldbeabletocompetewithstudentsfrominstitutionswithABETaccreditation. IEEE IEEEisaninternationalorganizationforelectricalandelectronicsengineerswhereengineersandscientistsfrom allovertheworldfreelyexchangetheirideasthoughvariouspublications,conferences,andmeetings. ThroughamembershiptotheIEEEsociety,globalappealoftheorganizationcanbesuitablyutilizedbyEET studentsatSCCtogetinformedofglobaltrendsintechnologyandglobalviewofanyspecificscientificproblem. ASEE ASEEisanationalorganizationthatpromotesexcellenceinengineeringeducationthroughmanypublications, conferencesandmeetings.Itspoliciesadvanceprofessionalopportunitiesforengineeringfaculties,itsactivities supportsincreasedstudentenrollmentinengineering.Itsconferencesalsobringengineeringeducators togetherforexchangeofideasinvolvingeffectivemethodsofengineeringeducation. AmembershiptothissocietyenablesEETfacultiesatSCCtostayinformedofthecurrenttrendsinengineering education. DeterminationofCriticalIssues Aftermakingslightadjustmentsinthecommitments/outcomesandmeasures,datawascollectedandpreparedfor presentationtoshowthestatusoftheprogram.WhenthisinformationwaspresentedtothePAGtheyidentifiedthe followingcriticalareasforworkoverthenextfiveyears. ProgramContinuanceEnrollmentintheprogramiscurrentlyatalevelhigherthanrequiredforcontinuationofthe program.Effortsmustbemadetosustainthisenrollmentlevelandahigherenrollmentlevelswouldprovide opportunitiesforadditionalfocusonactivitiesandopportunitiesinservicearea. RetentionTheretentionlevelintheprogramissomewhatlowerthanexpected.Ouraverageretentionrateisatleast 50%.Ourtargetisanaverageretentionrateof55%to60%forthenextfewofyears. EthicalBehaviorProfessionalismisalwaysamajorfactorforstakeholders.Inrecentyears,objectionablebehavior offewstudents,speciallynewhighschoolgraduates,wereobservedinclassrooms,thesebehaviorsinterferenotonly withteacherseffortstodelivertheirlessonsbutalsowithconcentrationsofmoreattentivestudentsinclass. DeterminationofPlanGoals/Objectives Workcontinuedwiththeprogramadvisorygrouptobrainstormpossiblegoalsandobjectivestoaddressthecritical issues.Aftercollectionofalldatafrommeetingsandcontactstheresultsweretakenandprocessedtoidentifyoneor twogoalsforeachcriticalissuethatwouldbepartofthefirsttwoyearsofwork.Theremainderoftheideasweresaved forpossibleinclusionaftercompletionofthefirstplan.ThefinaldraftdocumentwassharedwiththePAG,Susan Houseman,EmilyCook,RobertCarterandMorganPhillipsforfeedback.Withminimaladjustmentsitwasfinalizedinto thisform.
