DIVISION 5 METALS
The responsibilities for writing the Division 5 Sections are usually shared between the architect and the structural engineer. Close coordination will minimize errors and omissions. It is shortsighted to think that because products and systems fall within Division 5, the structural engineer has sole responsibility for the content. For example, structural steel may require a specialty shop primer that is compatible with a field applied paint system, or the steel may be fireproofed and the primer omitted altogether. 05120 STRUCTURAL STEEL The International Building Code addresses design, fabrication, erection, and other construction practices for structural steel, and incorporates by reference the requirements of several industry publications, including AISC, AISI, SJI, AWS, ASTM, and ASCE. The steel fabricator shall be either AISC certified or provide documentation certifying that all steel fabrications shall be made in accordance with AISC standards and guidelines. It also must be specified that no foreign structural steel will be allowed in the construction of the schools. For interior exposed structural steel that will remain unpainted, specify a light gray primer. Exterior structural steel should be field painted with a high-performance coating, and the factory primer should be coordinated as required. Steel members to be fireproofed shall be specified with no primer. 05210 STEEL JOISTS Specify open-web K-series joists for floors and roofs, and LH-series for long-span applications. Specify a light gray primer for all joists. 05310 STEEL DECK Floor and roof deck should be galvanized. Where metal deck will be field painted, specify non-passivated treated deck. 05400 COLD-FORMED METAL FRAMING Specify submittal requirements for design calculations, shop drawings, and installation drawings for curtain-wall framing supporting exterior masonry veneer, floors, and roofs. Specify performance requirements and show only the member depths on the drawings. The fabricator should design the metal thickness based on the design loads and deflection criteria specified. The design loads should be shown on the structural drawings. Specify a horizontal deflection of 1/240 for non-masonry panel supports, and 1/600 for masonry wall supports.

DIVISION 5-METALS

Specify G60 coating for non-masonry panel supports, and G90 coating for masonry wall supports. Specify deflection tracks or vertical deflection clips designed to allow for construction tolerances and to accommodate live load deflection of the primary building structure. 05500 METAL FABRICATIONS Specify miscellaneous steel components otherwise not specified in other Division 5 Sections. Include steel framing and supports for mechanical and electrical work, and coordinate with Divisions 15 and 16. Specify ferrous metals for typical components. Galvanize exterior components. 05511 METAL STAIRS Specify preassembled metal stairs with concrete-filled metal pan treads by local fabricators. Avoid name brand manufacturers purporting their preassembled units. These are usually proprietary designs based on the manufacturers standard methods of construction, with limited options. Specify requirements for submitting structural calculations and detailed shop drawings prepared by a qualified professional engineer legally authorized to practice in South Carolina. Pipe and tube railings may be specified as an integral part of the stairs, however, where handrails and railing systems are required as isolated units, they may need to be specified in a separate section. 05521 PIPE AND TUBE RAILINGS Handrails and railings may be fabricated from steel, aluminum, and stainless steel as required for the specific project. 05530 GRATINGS Specify metal bar gratings, expanded metal gratings, formed-metal plank gratings, and extruded-aluminum plank gratings as required for the specific project and application. 05811 ARCHITECTURAL JOINT SYSTEMS Specify exterior and interior building joint systems, with and without fire barriers that accommodate movement resulting from one or more causes such as thermal changes, seismic forces, or wind sway.
