Academic Ambassador

Spring Internship Campaa Quetzal (CQ) is a non-profit organization that works towards improving educational conditions for Latino students and families in Seattle Public Schools through parent and youth leadership and advocacy training. Since 2005, Campaa Quetzal has been educating and engaging the Latino Community on educational issues and developing opportunities for cultural enrichment, parent and youth leadership, and strengthen the communitys capacity to unleash the academic potential of our Latino youth. We are seeking Academic Ambassadors to support Latin@ youth during school and/or after school programs during the spring term, April 30-June 2012. This is an academic and cultural enrichment program with the mission of enhancing the mentorship and academic guidance to youth in 6-12th grades. This is a great opportunity to build leadership and serve as role models with younger students and collaborate with college tutors to identify barriers and develop programming towards educational access for Latinos. Academic Ambassadors are college students who serve as academic coaches, tutors, and mentors for youth. Academic Ambassadors participate in training seminars to develop their skills in tutoring, mentoring, and organizing Latino/a high school and middle school students to set goals to improve their academic achievement, graduate from high school college and career ready and pursue post-secondary education. The trainings provide guidance and opportunities to collaborate on developing workshops, learning about and identifying issues that impact bilingual Latino youth at the national and local level, and learning tutoring and mentoring strategies that empower youth to succeed academically. Academic Ambassadors are an integral part of the ALAS and the Latino Leadership Network (LLN) programs. In addition, they work with our partners at the Seattle World School and in Proyecto Saber classes. The college student training seminars are a partnership with the Pipeline Project at the University of Washington and afford students an opportunity to take service learning credits for the work they do with us. For more information about our programs visit www.campanaquetzal.org Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Attend orientation training of approximately 2 hours. Attend all trainings sessions and be punctual for all training sessions (Tuesdays 6-7:30pm at the University of Washington) Be on time for program site work with youth. On-site responsibilities ranges, depending on site. Includes approximately 2-4 hours: Assist in tutoring during work sessions, provide workshops, connect youth to relevant resources according to their interests and needs. Additional hours may include: recruitment and follow up phone calls to families & youth, mentor youth through scholarships and youth program applications, field trips and connecting them to additional resources in the community. Recruit and motivate youth and parents to participate and attend academic support components and parent workshops. Collaborate to organize and attend at least 1 field trip with students during the term. Meet parents and share perspectives on college access, transition, and experience (occasionally a weeknight or weekend). Program site work varies depending on schools: Tuesdays, 3-4:30pm, Mon & Wed. 2:30-4:30pm, Saturdays 9am-1pm and Mon-Fri between 8:30am-2pm.

Qualifications: Bilingual in English and Spanish. Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to range of fields including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics Demonstrated passion and commitment for justice and social change. Knowledge of Latino community education issues, culture and history. A high level of integrity in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with students and staff Compensation/Duration: Compensation is $15/hr for maximum of $300 (up to 20 hours per month) through June 2012.
