Straight Talk clubs (STC) started to be formed by students/ youth in early 1990s when Straight Talk Foundation (STF) began producing and sending copies of Straight Talk newspapers to schools/ communities. Thus, ST clubs are just groupings of young people who came together for the common interest of sharing, discussing and learning from each other to better their health, social change and development. Currently, STF has over 1200 clubs (both in and out of schools). These clubs may take on Straight Talk in their name. In 2008 when STF started communication with adult audiences such as parents and young married adolescents, which came with it the formation of Parent Talk clubs (PTC).

Parent talk clubs are groupings of parents who come together for the common interest of sharing, discussing and learning from each other to better their health and social well being of their families. STF communicates to adult audiences in seven languages and estimates its parent talk clubs to be in the range of 100-150.

This guide has been developed to help those young people or adults that are interested in forming a ST club in and out-of-schools. Also guide club members on possible activities to reach or engage other members or peers in the communities, role of executive and principles of STC members. In this guide, you will find a step by step process of how you can start and manage a straight talk club for young people and or adults. This guide talks about leadership and management of a STC. It also talks about how to utilize former members of the executive and what their role can be in the club- in the case of in-school clubs or club coordinators in the case of out-of school clubs.

There is lots of fun and benefits that members of ST/PT can benefit from and these are; Help you understand and appreciate your sexual and body development so that you; Learn how to reduce risky sexual behaviors that may lead to unwanted pregnancy and HIV/AIDS infections. Helps you acquire life skills to manage everyday challenges including how to reduce poverty in your homes and community as a club. For young people and adults, they appreciate the need to stay in schools longer. Make you get skills and knowledge of how to protect your friends from risks that may put their life in danger, or how to strengthen marriages for adults. Learn how to promote health environments e.g. tree planting, the value of good sanitation, and more. Acquire skills on how to start and manage incomes generation projects like; vegetable growing, poultry, piggery and starting merchandise retail shop. Acquire essential financial management skills and access less expensive loans as a result of group savings.

Any person can start a ST club so long as there are at least 10persons to begin with. There is NO age limit because ST clubs exist in primary schools and are called young talk clubs, in secondary, out- of- school and tertiary they are called straight talk clubs while adults call theirs; parent talk clubs.

Starting ST club is any fee to STF or possibly NO one in your community.

Once you have the idea, do the following;
1 Look for interested peers/friends in your school or community. And explain the benefits of a ST club to them. 2 Call a meeting and elect a responsible and active cabinet. (see elective posts in the section for leadership). The club executive should also include two representatives from each class if you are forming the club in a school. Avoid candidate classes when electing club executive. When forming the club in the community, ensure that each village the club covers is represented in the executive arm. 3 Make sure the cabinet is gender sensitive in case of a mixed school. 4 Look for an interested and active patron. Talk to a head teacher to appoint an adolescent-friendly teacher as the club patron (the members can even
suggest the name, and then the executive forward it to the head teacher). For out-of-school, talk to your LCI and identify influential, trusted and interested members of the community to become the patron. Explain to him/ her why you form the club and the likely benefits to members.

Include also the list of members, executive and the postal address of the club. If you are a club out-of-school, talk to any nearby organization, district chairman or school and ask them if you can use their box number to receive papers form STF for your club. On receiving your letter, STF will recognize your club by registering it for monthly posting of newspapers and also write to inform you.

When you form a ST club, it will be owned by you, members and the executive that runs it. But, your club will be associated or working together with STF in Kampala in contributing to improved health and livelihood of young people/adults and the bigger community at large. Wherever you are, STF will stay in contact with you so long as you provide your reliable phone contacts.

Leadership of a ST club
Leadership means to give direction. Allan Keith describes leadership as; Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen. The leaders of the STC must devote their time in the club to working with all members to help create social change and development in their communities. Below are some of the critical issues that leaders may decide to work on;

Management is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Straight Talk foundation admires to have its clubs self reliant and not dependant to it for resources. STF can assist only in initial stages. That is why it is important that in the above definition emphasis has been put on the bold words. A well administered club should lead to healthy lives and personal development of its members. The club leadership is tasked with specific duties that majorly include but not limited to the following. Clubs may choose to expand the functions of their leadership as they may deem fit while making their constitutions or rules to govern their club.

Tips to consider in managing a club;

What your club does depend on the members. But, what is common is that all ST clubs enjoy reading STF publication materials and listening to ST radio shows (both in English and your local language). STF clubs can engage in various activities and or projects but may not be limited to the following.

Key Activities:
Group radio and Newspaper listening and discussion: STF produces and sends English and local language Straight Talk newspapers to school and communities respectively. Reading and discussing these publications pass on the information. You can do it in assemblies, meetings, group discussions & seminars. The club should also encourage listening to ST radio shows. In schools, executive can get permissions from the school administration so that they can listen to the shows. You can listen in the club meeting, class or group.

Letter writing/ collection:
The only way STF stay in touch with your club members is through writing letters responding to issues in the newspaper or on the radio shows. Encourage your members to always write in if they have more information they need to understand. Straight Talk foundation has trained counselors that know and work with young people all the time. SO dont ashamed to write your letter and ask any thing. If you dont want your names disclosed in the newspaper or radio show, please do state that in your letter. You can also write to appreciate and send greetings! You can also send your picture along with your letter for the newspaper!

Club meetings:
Meeting with members make all aware of what is happening in the club and who is doing what. It is also a for a where members can discuss challenges and solutions, new ideas for the clubs and any other issues that could be important for the good of the clubs. Also, meeting can come out with plans to carry activities and who will do them. Note that it is important for secretary of the club to be taking notes of the meeting and keep as records. For any good club meeting is a MUST, and it can be held once a week or two times a month.

Guidance & Counseling

This is a central activity for every club. This is where we help friends to overcome problems & realize opportunities. Every adolescent needs to talk to someone who understands them. Always keep what they tell you confidential. You should only tell someone what you have heard if you feel the person may be putting his or her life at risk. Also, if a problem is too big for you to handle, you must refer the person to someone like club patron or school nurse.

Is a chance for young people to talk out their feelings & be listened to? Help friends to make decisions & regain selfconfidence. Can be done one-toone or through group counseling with a group of young group counseling with a group of young people with a similar issue. Health Talks: Invite health staff from nearby health centers/ units to answer questions from club members or youth groups. They can come weekly, monthly or per term.

Outreach activities:
Debates: These stimulate critical thinking. The speakers of the debate from the two sides are called proposers & opposers. Panel discussion use panelists who present their views. Why debate? Debates allow all straight talk club members to participate. They improve our communication skills, making us smart & boosting our self-esteem. They are a breeding ground for future politicians, lawyers, LCS & so on. The audience gets to ask questions.

Drama skits:
Drama skits (not more than 10min) presented to the community and letter on a discussion starts. Drama is a great way to express what we feel. It can be in form of plays, skits, stage shows, theatre performance, comedy or tragedy. Music and dance presentations for community education. Like drama, songs have rhythm that creates memories that take long to be wiped off our memories. Songs have actions and can involve many members of the club which keeps members actively involved in the club. Why drama? It is exciting. It requires limited resources. It attracts the attention of many people so can be highly effective in passing messages. Drama develops your talents & skills. All club members can take part in a drama. It sends direct messages as it is characterized by actions clearly & rightfully demonstrated. Because drama is interesting, massages take longer to disappear from someones memory.

Testing for HIV

is good but does not keep you safe. It is the behavior you follow after the test that protects you.

Gender; Girls are as intelligent as boys. Make the environment of your club respectful of both boys & girls.

At the end, after people have laughed at the costumes & characters, always ask or allow questions to generate discussions. If the play
was about rape, ask: what did you learn? Is rape a common problem in the community/school? What does the community do when a girl is raped? How can you stop rape? As club members, how can you help a boy & a girl in this situation?

Sports matches:
Sports matches with other groups or community (with sessions of ASRH talks before and after the games). To keep the club alive, you need fun activities. Sports keeps club members busy. It also helps them to resist risky behavior like early sex. They will not be bored. Sports build talent & teamwork. It handles the body, mind & heart at the same time & is fun! Visits to the sick in hospital, adolescents in jail, deaf/schools for the blind, etc. These build your skills & give back to the community within which you live. You also get noticed! Volunteering is a great way to get a job later.

vegetable seeds, better still you can contribute as a club to buy your own seedlings from a nearby dealer. Seeds cost little money but once looked after well could bring in a lot of money to the club. Vegetables are also good for our body growth! A club notice board (for display of STF paper to community). It doesnt matter where you are, you can have a club notice board. It can be at a school canteen or at the veranda of a local retail shop in a busy trading center at your village. A notice board should be in a place where rain will not destroy your works. Use the notice board to publish articles you have written as a club for the community to read or you can use the notice board to display the straight talk newspaper when you receive it for the rest of the community to read. Displaying is a good way to share information with many other people.

Growing a Club
Many STF Clubs have continued to realize the need to work together to improve the wellbeing of the communities in which they live and as such, have grown into community based organizations (C.B.O). CBOs work in communities and are registered by the district or sub county. They can access funding from NGOs and donors. You can talk to your community development officer at the sub county or at the district to find out how to register.

Your straight talk club can start a savings and loan scheme. This is particularly possible for parent talk clubs and out of school straight talk clubs. Loan and savings schemes help members start small business. STF staffs have received testimonies from club members who have supported their children with scholastic needs as a result of club savings and loans. Members agree to contribute a certain amount of money every time they meet. This money is kept in a secure place like a bank and once it accumulates, club

members can decide to borrow it at low interest rates to help improve their life and personal development. Remember; whatever you decide to do in your club depends on the members abilities. In other areas like Mbale, all STF clubs have organized themselves under an umbrella association. This is a good way of keeping in touch of all out of school clubs. The clubs have activities which include; Vegetable growing, Piggery, Cattle and goat keeping, Poultry, Sports teams (Netball and football) and savings and loan schemes. In Busia District, Bashir Musana is also coordinating a number of STF clubs.

Senior Straight Talkers Model - SSTM

The SSTM is an innovational structure that seeks to create a continuous involvement of former straight talk club members into the ST club activities. The former members are considered very instrumental for the clubs continuous success. These members have acquired a lot of knowledge and experience in club management and need to continue being resourceful to the club. The following are some of the functions the senior straight talkers can perform in the club after they have left the executive. The Senior Straight Talk club members will be responsible for; 1. Organizing Motivational Talks. 2. Meet-the-professionals visits. 3. Open days for the ST club.

It was 2008 when we decided to call all chairpersons of the straight talk clubs in Manafwa district. We wanted to know each other, that is when the idea of an association to strengthen our clubs came up. Today there are 25 (18 Straight Talk and 6 Parent Talk) clubs united under ECOBO. The clubs are from Manafwa, Mbale and Bududa. The leadership of the organization is made of chairpersons from the different straight talk clubs. Motivational Talks:
Senior Straight talkers will identify, arrange and invite distinguished persons to deliver motivational talks to ST club members. Motivational talks are aimed at instilling a spirit of; I CAN DO IT so as to have self motivated young people who can are enterprising and can create Jobs.

Meet-theprofessionals visits:
Senior Straight talkers will identify and arrange visits for straight Talk club members to companies and organizations. These visits shall be intended to model career choices for ST members after familiarizing themselves with professionals at work.

Open days for the ST club.

Senior Straight talkers will organize open days for the ST club. The open day will be a selected day where ST club members showcase activities they do in the club. The day could consist of MDD performances, sports contests, quizzes and or debates with an invited club.

1. A Straight Talk Club is a safe space for everyone. Club members are peers with similar goal/interest, and there are a few basics that everyone should remember to follow as Straight Talkers. 2. Respect everyone. Everyone has rights treat others the way you would like to be treated. Boys should not make girls feel uncomfortable and girls should not make boys feel uncomfortable either. Also, we can disagree with another persons point of view without putting the person down. 3. Listen and pay attention to the person who is talking. Dont talk over each other. Everyone will get a chance to speak. Everyones voices and opinions count. 4. Confidentiality People share personal things in discussions. Things that are talked about in Straight Talk Club meetings should not be discussed outside of the group. 5. There are no stupid questions! All questions are good! 6. Have fun! Creating a safe space means coming together to share and to support each other.

People might talk about personal things in club meetings that they might not want the whole school to know about. And if someone tells you a secret, dont tell others! 4. Always talk through disagreements. This will help you work things out so that everyone comes to a good agreement at the end. 5. Obey rules and regulations. This will help you work well with the school/local administration and help make it easier for you to have a Straight Talk Club. 6. Allow others to express their opinions. Everyone has an opinion, and you want to share your opinions too. 7. No sexual abuses/harassment of members or any other persons. Exemplary life is key for a ST club member. This will encourage others to have good behaviors.
