IN THIS ISSUE ~ NEWS & NOTES ~ BIKE SAFETY RODEO ~ LADIES TEA ~ Dear friends,

and so much more.....

Scripture calls upon us to walk a different path, to live a different life, than the culture around us. In other words, we are a counter-cultural movement, living in an alternative realm, an alternative kingdom. For example: We live in a culture where people often leave to someone else work that they themselves could easily do. Most people, if they see a piece of trash on the ground, will pass by it, possibly muttering to themselves, Its not my job to pick it up. However, here at Bixby Knolls Christian Church, we spend one day a month picking up litter not only on our property, but on the sidewalks of our neighborhood. Another example: We live in perhaps the most individualistic culture in human history, a culture in which people are increasingly isolated and look after their own self-interest. However, here at Bixby Knolls Christian Church we gather once a week for a community supper, not even knowing in advance with whom we will be sharing table fellowship, but welcoming all, contributing what we can to pay for the meal, some paying more, some paying less, depending on what each can afford. One more example: We live in a culture which emphasizes accumulating personal wealth and achieving as high a net worth as possible. However, here at Bixby Knolls Christian Church, we and those who have come before us have generously supported our ministry of wholeness, sacrificing personal wealth and striving to live more simply in order to be a part of a movement that brings wholeness to a fragmented world. In these ways and so many more, we are bringing new life and new vision to our world. We are making the good news of Easter come alive through us and through our ministry. I give thanks and praise to God for the 66 year-old ministry of our congregation, as well as the years of ministry that are yet to be. Blessings, Pastor Danny

Choral singing is great for health: It engages people mentally and physically. There is also a strong social networking benefit of a shared activity that is often emotionally uplifting. Now, if this experience occurs in a church service, does it produce even greater well-being and happiness? Is there, in short, a God dividend? The benefit of choral singing "is pretty cool, really," says Ellen Idler, a professor of sociology at Emory University. Singing can get everyone in the church literally on the same page, moving their bodies and voices in unison, usually with stirring songs. "The singing can be very important" to improving well-being and happiness, she says.

Interfaith Service and Celebration and Celebrate the Diversity of our Communities Sunday, April 29, 2012 First Congregational Church of Long Beach 241 Cedar Avenue 4:006:00 p.m.

Miracle on 43rd Street is our regions 2012 mission outreach in our own backyard. In collaboration with the Disciples Women, this unique service project focuses on bringing the best of our gifts, resources and talents as an expression of Gods love and empowerment to a welcoming community. This hands on work is a visible witness to what it means to be one church! It takes place June 27-July 1 at United Christian Church in Los Angeles, a historically African-American congregation in a mostly Spanish-speaking neighborhood where 72% of the residents have never finished high school. It is one of the most densely crowded neighborhoods in southern California. The need for a Christian witness of healing and wholeness is great. Help is needed to: paint the sanctuary; install new flooring in the sanctuary; remove the pews; clean and polish the pews; re-install the pews; repair and paint drywall; replace light fixtures; replace lamps; paint the dining hall; clean and paint the cupboards in the kitchen; mend and paint the wrought iron fencing; install irrigation and landscaping; re-stripe parking lots and as with every church facility, theres always window washing, general cleaning and closets to be organized. In addition, there will be a Youth Experience held in conjunction with Miracle Week; high school youth from throughout the United States will be coming to participate in mission projects at United Christian Church (in conjunction with Miracle Week) as well as at other locations in Los Angeles. Evenings will include worship & a special music concert. Pastor Danny is on the planning team for the youth event, so interested youth should talk with him. Bike Safety Rodeo

Bixby Knolls Christian Church will host a Bike Safety Rodeo on Saturday, May 19 from 10:00-1:00. This is an event for the community, and a great way for us to bring wholeness to our neighbors. Our job is to provide the location (which will be our parking lot) and to publicize the event. It would also be nice to have some volunteers provide food /refreshments, or even a hot dog lunch for the neighbors who come that day. If you are willing to help be a part of this, please let Pastor Danny know. The event itself will be conducted by Moves, Safe Moves a non-profit organization, which is recognized as the leading authority in traffic safety education in the country. Safe Moves has not only been credited with saving thousands of childrens lives through education, but also through legislation with new traffic safety laws. Safe Moves has been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning, America, 2 0 / 2 0 , Dateline and Oprah as well as in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time Magazine and Sports Illustrated.

Dispose of Electronics & Batteries at the E-Waste Drive

On Saturday, April 21st from 9-1 Hughes and Longfellow Schools are hosting a Free Community E-waste Drive and Document Shredding Event. The event will be held at the Longfellow Elementary upper playground, between Bixby and Roosevelt Roads. E-waste cannot be put into the trash so it tends to pile up in people's houses, and with tax day this week, sensitive documents start to pile up. These items can be safely disposed of at this free event! Donations of plastic bottles and aluminum cans will also be accepted.

Scheri DuBons surgery was successful and she was able to be back in church last Sunday.

AN INNER TUG
Our spiritual life is Gods affair, because... it is really produced by his steady attraction, and our humble and self-forgetful response to it. It consists in being drawn, at his pace and in his way, to the place where he wants us to be; not the place we fancied ourselves.
