8. Once cyclists make there way back to 146 via 197 the will have to turn left under 146 and cross 2 lanes of traffic. This should not be a problem as there will be Texas City officers there to control vehicular traffic. 9. Turn left off 197 onto the 146 feeder. Stay in the right lane, all the way back to Kemah. 10. Riders will remain on the feeder for about a mile before the feeder permanently merges back with the main highway. 11. Follow 146 all the way back to Kemah. 12. All athletes turn right on 7th street and dismount bikes on the line then run them through the chute into transition.

One month before participating in his first Ironman, Ryan Almon strained his back. Suddenly his dream of crossing the finish line faded and his rigorous training seemed wasted. Because the 37-year-old triathlete had recently completed performance testing at the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann, he called Kim Gandler, a sports biomechanist on the Institutes human performance team. What Almon received from the Institute was intense physical therapy and unexpected encouragement that allowed him to complete the Florida Ironman in 13 hours, 50 minutes. Three weeks prior to Ironman, I couldnt even get on the bike, said Almon. I could swim and run, but the physical act of leaning over was too painful.
A visit with William Mosi Jones, M.D., a sports medicinetrained physician affiliated with the Institute and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, revealed that Almon had several bulging discs, including one that was herniated 15 millimeters. Therapy with Memorial Hermann physical therapists Talal Hariri, D.P.T., and Franz Valenzuela, D.P.T., provided exercises to lessen Almons pain. Dr. Valenzuela also coached Almon on how to identify and avoid dysfunctional movement patterns that triggered his pain. With each session, I improved, said Almon. More than anything, the staff at the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann gave me the confidence and knowledge that I was capable of competing. Gandler said the Institutes work with athletes covers both the physical and mental preparation to perform. Transitioning to triathlons Years earlier, because of back problems, Almon was encouraged by his primary care physician to lose weight and strengthen his core muscles. As a result, he started running marathons, completing the first one alongside his father. He also biked the BP MS 150. So in 2009 when a coworker persuaded him to participate in a triathlon, it seemed like a logical progression. After that sprint triathlon, Almon progressed to an Olympic distance event and then a half Ironman before he decided to attempt the Florida Ironman in November 2011. Laughing at how he swam the breaststroke rather than freestyle in his first eight triathlons, the outgoing Almon said its not his main goal to better his time with each triathlon.
Instead, he enjoys participating at whatever speed he can and relishing the moment. Nothing compares with crossing the finish line of an Ironman, said Almon as he looks forward to racing in eight triathlons in 2012, including Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas. With each race, Ive been underprepared, but that has given me the motivation to improve my fitness level, to do better and train more for the next event, said the school yearbook sales representative who has lost 60 pounds over the last five years. Smarter training is what led Almon to undergo performance testing at the Institute while preparing for the Florida Ironman. He has recently started using the results of his lactate threshold profile to help him train for his first event of 2012, the Memorial Hermann Kemah Triathlon. Lactate threshold is based on different things, but for me its about monitoring my heart rate so I dont burn out before hitting the finish line, he said. When you know your lactate threshold, you can train your body to make less lactate and clear it faster, which can increase your performance, added Gandler.
Almon also underwent the Kcal/hour test at the Institute. This test measures expended calories per hour while running and cycling, so an athlete can determine nutritional needs. Penny Wilson, Ph.D., a registered dietician on the Institutes human performance team, counseled Almon on ways to better fuel his body. A circle of encouragement These days, Almon trains upwards of 15 hours weekly. The encouragement he received has gone full circle as he convinced his 68-year-old father to join him in a triathlon last year. In 2012, Almons triathlons will be a family affair. His dad will join him in three races while his brother, sister and mom will complete the family trio by each competing in a single event. I was impressed with the testing at the Institute, but what was more important was the support I received as a budding weekend athlete, said Almon. At Memorial Hermann, they were able to support me and tell me where I needed to be careful to meet the goals I set, because they are knowledgeable about the sports Im participating in. To learn more about how the Institute can help you compete at your highest level, call the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann at 713.704.2200 or visit ironman.memorialhermann.org.
