I HAVE HOPES AND DREAMS
SETTING
Jane is at Tom's home in Australia for the holidays.
Jane lived with them when she was an exchange student
in high school. She has kept in touch ever since, and is
like another daughter to them. Tom's family is Jewish,
and they are celebrating Chanukah. For eight days they
will light candles and read from the Torah. Jane and
Tom's son are talking about religion.
DIALOGUE
Do you miss Christmas, Jane?
No, not really, but I miss my family in London a little.
I certainly don't miss the shopping frenzy!
Do you consider yourself to be religious?
Not really. I believe God can't ft into one religion. But I
think all religions have some truth to them.

Well, these days I'm not sure what I believe.
NARRATIVE
Jane's letter to Tom's family:
...We received some bad news the day before yesterday.
Hiroshi's grandfather had been very ill for quite some time.
He was Buddhist, so we have been participating in the
Buddhist rituals. The night before last we stayed up and
kept a candle burning. Yesterday was the funeral
and cremation ceremony. We will go to Hiroshi's grand-
mother's house every week for three months...
QUESTIONS
How old was Jane
when she frst went to
Australia?
When did Jane last see
Tom's family?
Why do they celebrate
Chanukah?
Is Jane religious?
Is John religious?
Does John live in Aus-
tralia?
How old was Hiroshi's
grandfather?
Where does his grand-
mother live?
Why do they keep a
candle burning?
What kind of rituals
did Jane participate in?
