1. BASIC INFORMATION Project Title: Construction of a greenhouse for a high school. Name of Organization: Charity High School Address of Organization: 4-10 Central Avenue, Kingston 8 Tel: 924-6922 Fax: 924-6877 E-mail: chs@yahoo.com Location of Project: 4-10 Central Avenue, Kingston 8 Name of Contact Person: Mrs. Alecia Slowley Position: Teacher of Agricultural Science Tel: 775-6949 E-mail: aslowley@yahoo.com
Project Summary: The main purpose of this project is to facilitate the field work requirements of the Agricultural Science curriculum. In doing this, the aim is to expose students to practical/field work exercises that would enable them to make links between theoretical concepts and practical real world agriculture; hence leading to greater appreciation for Agriculture and improved performance in the subject. The project has four phases; site allocation and preparation, erection of a twenty by forty feet (20x 40) metal frame greenhouse, sourcing raw materials and equipment and commencement of greenhouse operations. The duration of the project is approximately one (1) year and the total estimated cost is J$1,210,000.00 (1 million, two hundred and ten thousand); the grant requested is J$1,000,000.00 (1 million).

APPLICANT INFORMATION Type of Organization: A Secondary Level Academic Institution Names and Positions of Officers in Organization: Board Chairman: Principal: Vice Principals: Mr. David Cohen Mrs. Claudia Jackson Mrs. Marsha Cunningham Mr. Paul Cox Bursar: Head of Science Department: Agricultural Science Teacher/Project Manager: Agricultural Science Teacher/Assistant Manager: Mrs. Valerie Mckenzie Mrs. Karen Green Mr. Cliff Simpson Mrs. Alecia Slowley
Purpose of Organization The purpose of the organisation is to transition students from comprehensive primary education to higher education. The organization seeks to give students common knowledge to prepare students for training at the tertiary level as well as to enhance physical and intellectual development to prepare students as future citizens. 3. PROBLEM STATEMENT There is a serious need for equipment/materials to enhance the learning of Agricultural Science at the institution. The CXC May/June 2008 report on students performance in Agricultural Science cites several deficiencies in students responses to questions in the various sections of the paper and commented on the need for consistent exposure to practical/field exercises. There is the need for a greenhouse to carry out the field work component of the curriculum. This lack of a greenhouse facility hinders the total development of an agricultural programme. Students need the exposure to practical, real world situations to enhance their ability to make
Page 2
appropriate linkages between theory and practical agriculture (CSEC Agricultural Science Syllabus, 2006). 4. PROJECT GOAL AND OBJECTIVES The goal of this project is to create awareness and a deeper understanding of Agriculture, the modern practices associated with it and to dispel some misconceptions of what the subject entails and in doing so, improve the performance of students in the subject. To achieve this, a greenhouse will be constructed and operations implemented. The objectives of such a project include identifying the appropriate space for such a greenhouse, obtaining permission for this undertaking and ultimately constructing and utilizing this facility.
Activities to be undertaken A tour of the school grounds with the Principal and other stakeholders in this project. Clearing of land space, excavation (if necessary). Lists prepared of all necessary materials and equipment. Sourcing materials and equipment at best possible prices.
To prepare the site allocated for greenhouse construction. To source raw materials and equipment for greenhouse operations.
Fully prepared site for greenhouse construction. Acquisition of necessary equipment and materials.

To set up a green house facility to facilitate the SBA component (field work) of the Agricultural Science Syllabus.
To expose students to practical/field work exercises that would enable them to make links between theoretical concepts and practical real world agriculture
Use non-conventional methods to grow crops eg. Box and trough culture Develop a herb garden.
Use of practical exercises to enhance theoretical material. Students will be given a pre-test before greenhouse operations take effect and a post test six (6) months after commencement of greenhouse operations.
5. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION The need for the subject Agricultural Science at the secondary level has become more apparent with the changing of the times and as such any programme aimed at implementing and improving this area of science yields much support from organisations such as the Parents Teachers Association (P.T.A.). The P.T.A. has pledged to provide support, monetary and

otherwise, to maintain the project to ensure its continuity and longevity. Members of the association have pledged to help with the preparation of the site, the construction of the green house and donations of equipment and materials such as seeds and other farm equipment.
6. COLLABORATION AND ALLIANCES WITH OTHERS The schools Science Department is in collaboration with organisations such as the 4H club, CASE, NEPA the Forestry Department and Horticultural clubs and organizations. Collaboration with these organisations will enhance the performance of the Agricultural Science programme as such alliances will take it outside of the box. Students will realise that such a programme does not stop at what occurs in the classroom, laboratory or on the field but can influence the wider society even at their level. It is hoped that such collaboration will enrich the existing programme. 7. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE The project is slotted to span one year commencing in the month of September. After the greenhouse is set up greenhouse operations will be ongoing from February of the following year. Evaluative processes will also be ongoing from the commencement of greenhouse operations. The table below gives a time- line in months for the various project-related activities.

training is in that area; he also has experience in organizing and implementing projects of like nature as this one because he has managed a farm that had a nursery. The Head of the Science Department, Mrs. Karen Green is also a member of the management team as she will have to endorse and approve the purchase of the necessary items to complete the project as well as assist in sourcing these items. The other persons on the team are Mrs. Alecia Slowley, the second Agricultural Science teacher, Ms. Jonnette Dixon, the lab technician and Mr. Kevin Williams, the farm attendant. Mrs. Slowley will assist Mr. Simpson in the implementation and maintenance of the project, Ms. Dixon will assist with any experiments or other related activities that need to be done and Mr. Williams will assist with the setting up of the greenhouse as well as the day to day green house operations. Final approval of all activities related to the project will be given by the Principal; Mrs. Claudia Jackson under advisement of Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Green. The bursar, Mrs. Valerie Mckenzie will be in charge of the project funds which will be disbursed as instructed by the Principal upon submission of a request memorandum.

10. BUDGET ASSUMPTIONS/NOTES In preparing this budget, several assumptions were made primarily as it concerns the prices of equipment and materials from the farm supplies company; it is assumed that there would not be much fluctuation as it relates to increases in prices.
11. COUNTERPART FUNDING Three other organizations were approached for financing this project; they include the schools P.T.A., the Past Students Association and a prominent businessman from the community surrounding the school. The P.T.A. has pledged their support with finances as well as volunteer work; their contribution totals the approximately $162,000 as seen in the budget. The Past Students Association has pledged a sum of $100,000 to aid in the initial day-to-day greenhouse operations and the community business man has pledged a further $50,000 to also aid in these operations.
