Do you think tuition is necessary for one to achieve good results? Answer: In Singapore, having tuition is part and parcel of almost every students life. According to a Sunday Times poll in 2008, 97% of students in Singapore had some form of tuition, be it home tuition, tuition centres or student care centres. http://www.tutorcity.com.sg/tutor/article.php? article_id=9 However, I think that it is not a necessity currently because of three main reasons. The lessons taught by the tuition teachers may confuse the students due to large differences in the methods of teaching. Furthermore, students can seek extra help in school. Lastly, tuition may result in extra workload for the students. Raise confusion among students - Different methods of teaching in school & tuition centre - Students may not be able to adapt to the changes - Different topics learnt at the same time in school & in tuition (At tuition centres, not one-to-one tuition) - Too much time spent on tuition till students cannot concentrate on revision for current topics learnt in school Extra workload for students - Tuition homework & tests - Cause more stress as students find it difficult to manage time accordingly - Students prioritise tuition homework over school work - In the end, students eventually get exhausted and may not be able to focus in school due to the amount of workload. This will cause their performance in school to deteriorate. Seeking extra help in school - Consult teachers in school for help - Do not need to fork out extra money for tuition - Teachers in school are more up to date with the MOE syllabus However, tuition also helps students to catch up with school work. For example, sometimes the teachers in school teach too fast and those who learn at a slower pace will be left out. Tuition helps these students to catch up in their studies. In the case of one-to-one or private tuition, all the attention is given to the student. Hence, one need not worry about keeping up with the same pace as his classmates. Sometimes, tuition teachers teach something in advance and help prepare the student to cope with a particular topic better in school. From the above mentioned, I think tuition is not necessary as it may raise

confusion, provide extra workload and help can be seek in school itself. Although tuition has its benefits such as helping a student to keep up with his school work, I believe that the need for tuition depend on the individuals.

Co-curricular activities benefits students and help achieve a holistic education. Do you agree? Answer: I agree to this statement as students can learn many life lessons and values which cannot be taught in the classroom, such as leadership skills, teamwork, unity, perseverance and responsibility. Students are required to attend their CCAs regularly, which is their responsibility, and upon facing difficulties with different opinions and personalities, students will learn how to solve problems and adapt quickly. Students will also have a chance to lead when they become Secondary Threes and Secondary Fours. Through these regular activities, students can then learn skills and morals that will benefit them in future. On the other hand, although students have much to gain from their CCAs, the activities also puts pressure on them as some of the students may dislike their CCAs and do not want to attend them, but if they do not turn up, it will be counted as truancy from CCA without valid reason and may cause their conduct to be poor if their attendance is less than 75%. Disciplinary action will be taken against them. Due to these factors, students will feel forced to attend their CCAs and in the end not learn anything from the CCAs. Instead, they will have caused a burden on the students instead of benefiting them. In addition, CCAs may take up a lot of time as students have to plan for the activity, take time to travel home during peak hours and this will result in little time for them to complete their homework and revise.

Education
Do you prefer to study in groups or individually? Answer: Given a choice, I prefer to study individually. Studying individually is more effective and progressive for me as compared to studying in groups because: More focused -I would spend the time talking to my friends instead. It would be rather hard for me to restrain myself from having a casual talk with my friends as we would be distracted from a talking about a tempting gossip or keeping up-to-date with the latest news. I dare not say that I would spend about 60% of my time digressing. Thus, studying in groups is not an effective method for me. -However, studying alone will help me set myself in the right mindset. I would not be tempted to have a casual chat, thus increasing my productivity. Trains ones independent study ability -When studying with my friends, I could ask my friends about questions I do not understand. However, overtime, I would tend to turn to my friends for help without even trying to think of the solution. -On the other hand, studying alone means that there will not be anyone around me to guide me. This will make me force myself to think of possible solutions and thus make me more independent. More flexible -If I study with my study group, I have to make appointments and ensure that majority is able to turn up. This is rather troublesome and might cause me to not study because my friends could not make it on that day. -However, things are more flexible when I study alone. I could decide when and where I want to study, so as to ensure that I could study smart. This could even train my selfdiscipline as I would have to have the will to study. Learning at ones pace -Sometimes, I may require more time to understand a certain subject. Studying alone thus helps me as I could study at my own pace until I understood the concepts. -If I were to study with my friends, they might move on to other topics before I fully understand the concept. If everyone else understands the topic except me, I may feel embarrass to admit it or to ask them to slow down just to teach me. Hence, I might still

have difficulties understand a certain topic, which might even affect my understanding of other topics. Study groups may not be as effective as it seems -When studying with my friends, we may be discussing about a problem that we do not know how to solve. However, I might not be actively participating in the brainstorming. I will just be listening to other peoples input of knowledge and trying to understand their viewpoint instead of giving my opinions and learning from my mistakes.
