Know: that the presence of peace (hadrat al salam) is one that has been neglected by the heedless.

No sooner are they out of the presence of the ritual prayer, than they come forth as oppressors and sinners, coming close even to leaving Islam altogether. They are not aware that this is the presence the exiting of which necessitated that phrase, Give us relief with it, O Bilal. That is, relieve us with the presence of the prayer (hadrat al salah) from the arduous struggle of the presence of peace and its many works- many because of its containing in it all acts which bring one close to Allah save prayer, and because of its containing in it all those things which by virtue of being permitted stand in the way of the possible causes of disobedience. In fact the presence of the prayer, is a condensed form of the presence of peace, folded in towards its own essence, as it were, indicating in its form all other kinds of worship as we have pointed out previously. He who is in the presence found in the prayer is restrained from all those things familiar to him in his mortal frame, for he seeks divine secrets, the overflowing of the divine mercy, and to be overwhelmed into obedience, and to be aided by the Truth, and to be granted divine gifts. And for these reasons it is performed in solitude, and because of the singleness of its aim, the gnostics have considered it a lightening of burdens and it has brought them to a high station. They have thus been carried by its divine breeze to a position from which they see it and the presence of peace as one and the same, for they are ever looking towards the knowing King. So they take their share of its seven oft-repeated ones, and that is the reality of drawing near. For they are seven AYAHS and the UMMA is composed of seven types as is mentioned in The Gems: the grateful, the hopeful, the fearful, the sincere, the reliant, the MUSTAQIM, and the gnostic. The share of the grateful is: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. And the share of the hopeful is: The All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate. The share of the fearful is: The Possessor of the Day of Judgement. While the share of the sincere is: You we worship. The share of the reliant is: And to You we turn for aid. And the share of the MUSTAQIMIN is: Guide us to the straight path. The share of the gnostic is: The path of those whom You have blessed. And so on. So they fulfilled the requirements of those types in the moments of the presence of peace until they stood astride both those presences in utter slavehood. And they realised then that the presence of peace and security is absolute: tied to the manifold sites in it for manifesting submission (islam), and faith (iman) and picking the ripe fruits of total certainty and spriritual excellence. They realised therefore that it is not a site for committing sins and those things which bring about utter loss. They realised that this absoluteness was tied, in other words, to the sunna, even if that be in relieving oneself. That it was tied to perfecting one's intention, even when taking a morsel of food or a sip of drink. And so they understood that he presence of Allah is only to be found in the obeying of Allah the Tender, the Benefactor and in rejecting our own caprice at all times. Indeed, entering into this presence is nothing but the turning of one's heart entirely towards Allah Almighty for He is ever present, even were He to seem to the outward senses to be invisible. In this they witnessed the interlocking of the two presences, of prayer and of peace,

an the intertwining of the acts of both states of closeness. For each one indicates the other, and if they were to be made separate this would mean that both have been lost. FARA2U... till INAHU 7AMIDUN MAJID. And they busied themselves with the work of overcoming the five obstacles through establishing the five prayers fully: physically and spiritually. They overcame the obstacle of of this lower world with the noon prayer, for this lower world is the first of the two abodes, just as the noon prayer was the first of the prayers to be manifest in Islam. And they overcame the obstacle of death, and its agonies and the wringing of the spirit out of the body with the afternoon prayer. For just as with death, life ends, so too with the afternoon prayer signal the end of the day. And with the sunset prayer, they overcame the obstacle of the grave, for that prayer shares with the grave a liminal state (barzakhiya). For the sunset prayer is prayed in that time between the fading of the light of day, and the settling in of the night, and in this period the guardian angels of the night, and those of the daylight hours meet together. As for the grave, it is the last of the places of this lower world, the proof of this being the that its torments will end. As a witness to this are the words of Allah, where He mentions the disbelievers when they are resurrected: QALU YA WAYLANA MAN BA3ATHANA MIN MARQADANA And if the intermediate world of the grave was of the Final Abode, it would not, of course, have an end. But the grave is also the first of the places of the next world, for if it were only a part of this lower world, the works of the dead would not be shown to them, as they will be in the grave. With the evening prayer they have overcome the difficulties of resurrection, avoiding the darkening of faces as on that Day. For after the darkness of nightfall there is only sleep, which is the brother of death, and waking, which is likened to resurrection follows upon its heels. Allah says, WA HUWA ALADHI YATAWAFAKUM BILAYL (UNTIL THUMMA YAB3ATHAKUM FIH). And for this reason also, the Prophet used to say, when he intended sleeping, Lord, protect me from your torment, when You resurrect your slaves. Finally, with the dawn prayer they overcome the difficulty of the Reckoning, which may fall about the slave in the space it takes to pray to units of prayer. So with this prayer that return from the ignorance of their feeling safe from the Reckoning, to the dawn of the truth of the Last Day, in the same way that they come out of the darkness of night, into the bright light of day. It has been said that the ignorance of the people of the graves with regards to the calamities of the Day of Resurrection, is as the ignorance of the people of this world of the state of those in the grave. How wonderful, then, is the ordering of existence! How wonderful the Wisdom and

the Will that ordered it! And so the believer moves from divine presence to to divine presence, one indicating the reality of the other for all who think and learn. To make this point more clearly, we can say that Islam was built on five foundations: to testify that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is his Messenger; to establish the prayer; to give the Zakat; to fast the month of Ramadan; to visit the Sacred House of Allah. These are incumbent on every Muslim. Then they were categorised into two categories. One category there is no escape from performing de to the multitude of its conditions, and the dearth of reasons which would excuse its non-performance. The second category may be necessary to perform or not necessary to perform, though there are limits which may not be transgressed in its conditions. The first category includes the testification of the unity of Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger. It includes also the establishment of the prayer. For these two forms of worship, the conditions are clear and simple to follow and that which is forbidden regarding them is clearly known in the Sacred Law. The second category includes the other pillars. For there people, and they are many as is attested to by the number of valid excuses not to pay the Zakat in the ayah, who live their entire lives without ever having enough to pay Zakat on. There those also who are incapable of performing the obligatory fast, nor the voluntary. There are those who could not find a way to make the pilgrimage to the Sacred House, insofar as they could not guarantee a livelihood for their family in their absence or who could not meet the expenses of their own traveling. And it is this category upon which is built the structure of the presence of peace and security. For one finds security in it from the obligations of the religion, if one is incapable of performing them. There is in this good tidings, and a lightening of the burdens set upon one by obligations. And so upon exiting the presence of prayer, in the first category, there are those exit into security in that they have been exempted from the other pillars for their lack of ability to do so. So if you understand all this, you will understand that the Muslim is either in a state of prayer, and that is what we have called the presence of the prayer, or salat, meaning in the Arabic to 'to enter' or the Muslim is outside the prayer in the presence we have called the presence of peace or security, that is security of the performance of the remaining three pillars, or from not performing them due to valid excuse. Now , the presence of prayer has three necessary preliminaries which are within the confines of the presence of peace. In the same way, the presence of peace has three preliminaries which are within the folds of the presence of prayer.

The preliminaries of the presence of prayer is the call to prayer, the call to establish the prayer, and the opening glorification. The preliminaries of the presence of peace are the testification at the end of the prayer, the words Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the words, Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. These come before the end of the prayer and the beginning of the presence of peace which occurs with the termination of the prayer. The two presences also come together in the uttering of the words There is no deity but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah which occurs in the testification of faith before terminating the prayer, and in the call for establishing the prayer, which is before the glorification which formally begins it. The presence of prayer of course is limited to specific acts and one orientation, and remains so until it is finished. However, if a state of fear comes over one then all orientations become valid, and all is made permissible including walking and running.
