Sullivans Eighth Grade Mathematics Class Hope Sullivan STANDARDS (A) Content Standards (1) 8 Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. (2) 8EE.5 Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. (B) ISTE NETS (1) Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. (2) Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. LESSON OBJECTIVE(S) Ratios and proportions: Solve proportions (students will be able to solve for a variable that is in the form of a ratio and proportion). INTRODUCING THE LEARNING ACTIVITY
1. I will introduce the lesson by making sure everyone was comfortable with the content from the previous class of identifying ratios as proportions. Next I will inform the students that we will learn how to solve for a variable that is present in a proportion. 2. My students will be motivated by my maintaining a positive and upbeat attitude in class. I will also inform students that they will receive a gold star at the end of class providing they score an 85 or above on the practice at the end of class.
PROVIDE INFORMATION
There will be no new definitions for this lesson, so at the beginning of the class I will provide a simple review on the whiteboard to ask if students remember the definition of a proportion. While in front of the classroom, I will verbally explain the steps in solving for proportions while doing examples on the whiteboard. After getting through two or more examples I will ask the class to start joining in and responding to the examples.
PROVIDE PRACTICE
Students will be asked to access my website and click on the class projects tab where they will open the link to the 20 practice questions. Students will be encouraged to work on their own but allowed to get help from others and myself if they are in need of help. Once they feel comfortable with the proportions they will be asked to open the quiz yourself link and answer ten questions that involve solving proportions.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT
Once the students feel comfortable with the20 practice questions on proportions they will be asked to open the quiz yourself link and answer ten questions that involve solving proportions. From here the students will be asked to report totals and then print the report with their name on it. They will hand in the results and those who scored an 85 or above will receive a gold star!
