Question 1: The American Dream, whether considered an inspiration, a vision, an allusion, a delusion, or
a nightmare may differ according to race, education, experience, age, and other factors that determine
peoples lives and distinguishes them from others. Compare and contrast the American Dream theme
in both the novel based on the factors mentioned above and in your supplemental materials. Discuss
how the author uses motifs to emphasize the American dream theme.
Question 2: Emersons assertion that whoever will be a man must be a nonconformist is as much of a
statement of the American dream as the ideal of one who succeeds by adapting to the norms and the
demands of society. Compare and contrast how the main characters in the novel exemplify these two
definitions of the American dream. Discuss how the author uses motifs to emphasize the American
dream theme.
Question 3: There are two levels at which the American dream has always existed: spiritually and
materially. So whether the dream turns out to be good or bad, it is mainly just a question of priorities.
